The 1997–98 FC Bayern Munich season was the 33rd consecutive season in the top flight of German football, the Bundesliga, since the promotion of the team from the Regionalliga Süd in 1965. Before the start of the season Bayern signed Xherdan Shaqiri, Dante, Claudio Pizarro, Mitchell Weiser, Tom Starke and Mario Mandžukić. Bayern also added Javi Martínez after the first week of the Bundesliga season.
Background
[edit]Bayern Munich began pre-season training on 3 July 2012.[1] Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated that the Bundesliga championship is the top priority for the club this season.[2] Philipp Lahm declared Borussia Dortmund as the favourite to win the championship.[3] On 2 July 2012, the club announced that Matthias Sammer replaced Christian Nerlinger during Euro 2012.[4] Heynckes believes that the 2012–13 squad is better than the previous season's squad.[5]
Transfers
[edit]In the transfer market, Bayern Munich signed FC Basel and Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri before signing Claudio Pizzaro from Werder Bremen. They also signed Mario Mandžukić, Dante, Raeder and Starke. Bayer Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhäuser accused Jupp Heynckes of "tapping up" Lars Bender.[6] Bayer Leverkusen had rejected an "official" offer from Bayern Munich the previous week.[6]
Bayern Munich opens their Bundesliga campaign against Greuther Fürth.[7] This will be the first Bundesliga match between the two clubs.[8] Bayern Munich will have 6 Bavarian derbies this season.[8]
Bayern have been in a highly publisized, long winding and from the club itself largely open pursuit of Athletic Bilbao midfielder made centre back, Javi Martínez, throughout the summer. The pursuit was finally concluded on 29 august, when the signing was made official. [9] The transfer of Martinez, at €40 million, is the most expensive transfer in the history of the Bundesliga.[10]
