Specialty: generalist focus on human processes and practices of communication -- combining sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics with rhetorical criticism and philosophy of knowledge
Interests: symbol systems (esp. verbal, iconic), classical rhetoric, philosophy of communication, pop culture (film, science fiction/fantasy, advertising, imaging of public figures), Jungian approaches to fairy tales and cultural narratives
Curious about: just about anything that is not mathematical, technological, or mechanical
Teaching: have taught 70+ different courses over almost 30 years university teaching
Origins: American (20 yrs in southern mountains, 20 years in mid-west, 5 in Dakotas)
Residence: Middle East (Persian Gulf States)
Research methods: social science and humanities methods
Talents: editing/proofreading (can we say "obsessive-compulsive"...), coaching research and writing, quick study in learning new things and integrating them in with the continually evolving "big picture" in my mind
Travel: extended time in Middle East (UAE, Oman); moderate time in Yemen & Italy; jaunts about Europe and North Africa; been in 41 of 50 U.S. states
