  • Yousaf M, Ahmad M, Ji D, Huang D, Raza SH. A cross-cultural comparison of ethnocentrism and the intercultural willingness to communicate between two collectivistic cultures. Sci Rep. 2022 Oct 12;12(1)
    • This is a scientific journal article published in the Scientific Reports journal in 2022, so it should be a reliable source. It analyzes data from Pakistan and China and the effects of ethnocentrism in collectivist countries.[1]
  • Balabanis, George; Siamagka, Nikoletta, Theofania (2022-09-01). “A meta-analysis of consumer ethnocentrism across 57 countries.” International Journal of Research in Marketing.
    • This is a compilation of data from 240 different studies across 57 countries. From the analysis, the authors concluded that it was a global phenomenon, as well as noting what cultural values were precursors to high levels of consumer ethnocentrism. It is from the International Journal of Research in Marketing, so it should be a good source. [2]
  • Lee, W.-N., Hong, J.-Y., & Lee, S.-J. (2003). Communicating with American consumers in the post 9/11 climate: an empirical investigation of consumer ethnocentrism in the United States. International Journal of Advertising, 22(4), 487–510.
    • This is an article from the International Journal of Advertising, so it should be a reliable source. Following 9/11, the political atmosphere of the United States became more nationalistic, patriotic, and ethnocentric. This article breaks down the individual traits of people that may have caused them to become more or less ethnocentric following 9/11. [3]
  • Gelovani, S., Theocharis, Y., Koc-Michalska, K., & Bimber, B. (2024). Intergroup ethnocentrism and social media: evidence from three Western democracies. Information, Communication & Society, 1–19.
    • This is an academic article from the journal of Information, Communication, and society. Although aspects of the article are original research/a primary source, the portion that will be used is a literature review and analysis of ethnocentrism across the social media environment. [4]
  • Cellan, N. (2017). We are therefore I am: Social media and ethnocentrism. International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society, 13(1), 11-25.
    • This source is from the International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society, and should be a reliable source. The article is an analysis of Kenyan youth and their habits on social media as it relates to ethnocentrism. Generally, the author found that collectivist countries reflected their values on social media.[5]
  • Pradanna, Satrio Alpen; Abdulkarim, Aim (2023-07-02). "THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN STRENGTHENING MULTICULTURAL TOLERANCE AMONG DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP". Proceeding of International Conference on Innovations in Social Sciences Education and Engineering. 3: 013–013
    • This is an article from the Third International Conference on Innovations in Social Sciences and Engineering, and should be an accurate and reliable resource to use. In it, the authors state that the role of social media in relation to ethnocentrism is not always negative. They posit that by connecting people around the world, social media, when used thoughtfully and effectively, can promote tolerance and multicultural literacy. [6]
  • Mustofa, A. (2021). Ethnocentrism in Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai Movie: Postcolonial Perspective. Lensa (Semarang. Online), 11(2), 206–216.
    • This article is a submission to the Lensa: Kajian Kebahasaan, Kesusastraan, dan Budaya (Lens: Linguistic, Literary and Cultural Studies) journal out of Indonesia, submitted by a member of a university English department. I researched the journal online and found it to be reputable, employing double-blind peer review and retaining a Creative Commons license. The authors analyzed the film and script of the movie, "The Last Samurai," and detailed three main aspects of ethnocentrism employed. In the past, the film has been criticized for ham-fisted attempts at depicting samurai culture and being Western-centric. [7]
  • Ali, Hussein (2022-12-30). "Causes and effects of ethnocentrism in the media". Global Journal of Sociology and Anthropology. 11 (4): 1–2.
    • This article is from the Global Journal of Sociology and Anthropology from a researcher in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. The reason I am including this article is because is is quite clearly the source where the contributor for the section "Effects of ethnocentrism in the media" directly plagiarized from without bothering to even try and cite in the footnotes. Regardless, the article is valuable resource and states causes and effects in plain language, and is a good jumping-off point. [8]

Outline of proposed changes

[edit]
  • Work will be done in the second paragraph, the one dealing with consumer ethnocentrism.
  • GENERAL PLAN FOR SECOND PARAGRAPH
    • Begin writing after a sentence that ends with “whether imported or domestic.”
    • Then, write about how certain cultural factors are predictors of consumer ethnocentrism, and the preference of domestic products to foreign
    • Remove basically everything after the aforementioned sentence, because it is uncited and doesn’t make sense.
  • Remove “consumer ethnocentrism” definition, it’s a sentence fragment and doesn’t add much; the hyperlink already explains what it is, especially when compared to format of “featured” or “good” Wikipedia articles
  • Find the study based on Chinese/Japanese consumer skepticism – known as consumer ethnocentrism; can find an example and compound further, but still remove sentences that make zero sense.
    • I wasn’t able to find the article that was referenced (in a sentence, not in an actual citation) regarding Chinese/Japanese purchasing habits post-WW2, but I found one that compiles data from 240 studies across 57 countries that does a good job explaining the phenomenon, as well as noting that it is universal
  • GENERAL PLAN FOR MEDIA SECTION
    • i've found sources for a lot of major points, like an analysis for a film, analysis of the depiction of Brazilians in the media, and how social media plays a role in ethnocentrism. I plan to take notes on all these to get a clear and whole understanding, and then begin planning/outlining my actual writing.
    • I'm going to have to delete the entire section and work from scratch, but I'm going to do it in sections and clearly explain myself because I am a beginner, and people will be likely to doubt my knowledge/edits.
