Category:Total penumbral lunar eclipse
[edit]Hi Stephen. I wanted to somehow make a subcategory of lunar eclipse, tried a couple things, nothing worked the way I wanted. SockPuppetForTomruen (talk) 22:31, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your note about this category. I also agree that the parent categories should be listed. The truth is that I only put a header on this category since it is being used automatically by Template:Infobox School District. It is currently empty because I fixed the issues with all articles that were in the category. If the category is going to continue to be deleted, then we should work to update the code for the School District Infobox so it doesn't automatically place articles in this category. Let me know what you think on my talk page, please! -Gr0ff (talk) 13:55, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

The category was created for use by the WikiProject Saints. I'm guessing, although I'd have to check, that no collaborations were ever done, so it would be blank. I can't see any reason not to delete it, but if there were any pages in it then maybe there might be, I dunno. If not, though, go ahead and delete. John Carter (talk) 17:36, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Kanyakumari district - reply
[edit]Hi, I applied a db tag to this Tamil Nadu district category, just now, (Category:Kanyakumari District); it was superfluous to the set of Tamil Nadu district categories I was creating, there was an extant Category:Kanyakumari which does suffice. Thanks. --Mr Accountable (talk) 18:32, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
empty categories
[edit]I wanted to say that I disagree with the practice of "blanking" categories that are empty. In doing so, you eliminate the ability of people to navigate into them and salvage them. You could simply note they are empty, or better yet, create some sort of "this category is empty and will be deleted soon" template that would allow other users to easy evaluate which empty categories should be populated. I responded to your specific comments on my talk page. — Reinyday, 15:27, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Mistaken depopulation
[edit]The reason for the depopulation of the category has to do with a change made to the banner for the project since I edited it here. Since the entire format has been changed, I am unable to identify right now why this happened. If you could take coding that would be great.--Jorfer (talk) 18:52, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you
[edit]for the tip. I have a question, that may sound silly. If I add to categories, per se another IP address to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Suspected_Wikipedia_sockpuppets_of_CASSA via template, where do I place the template, at the category page, or at the user page? Or create a new page ? If I use the temlate where you placed it, will that action create a different page, or add info to the existing page? I am familiar with editing a page via "edit this page" option, trying to figure out how to work with categories. Thanks again, --Afru (talk) 00:10, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Ranchos of California
[edit]Thanks for your continuing interest in Ranchos of California - and support of moving the list to its own page. I agree that the article is not too long - I think it should be expanded. It is the list that breaks up the article. Eventually there will be about 800 entries in the table, so really it is just a matter when, not if. I think it may have to be broken down again by County - but later. I have been working intermitantly on this page for the last couple of months, and plan to keep working on it. I have learnt thru this (reverting my moving the list) that there are more people following this than I thought. As a newbie I would appreciate any comments or advice you have.Emargie (talk) 21:52, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi - It would appear all the villages in Shizuoka have merged into towns or cities, due to what the Japanese call gappei so all its (former) villages are now in Category:Dissolved municipalities of Shizuoka Prefecture. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:31, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Category renaming
[edit]I notice all your attempts at tidying the "on subject" categories. Which I agree with. What do you think of the Category:Books by Country and Category:Books by Region categories. It seems out of style to have "by" being the linkage when all around are "on". I can see why, in that it is a more natural construction. But it doesn't give the meaning associated with the categories contained or even housing them. Would something like "Books on countries" and "Books on regions" be better. Thoughts? :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:36, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- I know: however the naming seems to imply that the books are "from" the region. It is at least ambiguous. It is highlighted by the fact all of the parent and child categories relate to the fact they are "books on..." ie. the books cover the subject of either the regions included or the countries included. This is fact is not indicated by the category name, hence the question. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 09:08, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

WP:Picture of the day
[edit]I created that category, But I remeber I don't delete it. It was deleted by somebody else.
Actually, I posted this image as POTD for the date march 4th 2010, as the date coincides with the festival Ayya Vaikunda Avataram. The template (Template:POTD/2010-03-04)is remaining undeleted while the schedule for the whole month of march 2010 ([1]) was deleted. Now my doubt is, Is my image remaining as the 'PICTURE OF THE DAY' for the date march 4th 2010 or the image was removed from that date too?. - Vaikunda Raja (talk) 16:39, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Books on geography categories
[edit]It finally dawned on me that Category:Categories by country comes under Category:Countries and Category:Categories by region comes under Category:Regions. Based on those articles categories, I made the corresponding books categories as follows.
Now all these categories match up between articles and books. RichardF (talk) 02:06, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Czech victims of Soviet repressions
[edit]Stephen, Czech victims of Soviet repressions is empty again now. Our friend Kingstowngalway added Augustin Schramm to save his category from being deleted, but Augustin Schramm's cause of death is clearly disputed and there's nothing in his biography here on Wiki to suggest any Soviet repression or otherwise. Kingstowngalway, of course, is the one who created Category:Victims of Soviet repressions by nationality and pretty much every (if not every) subcategory therein. I think it's safe to delete this particular subcategory now. He's obviously more interested in propaganda points than any genuine pursuit of any truthful classification. Thanks. – PasswordUsername (talk) 10:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Failure to use proper ndash violates Wikipedia policy
[edit]They are standard on Wikipedia in things like Eberlein–Šmulian theorem, appearing in hundreds—maybe thousands—of articles. This isn't a new proposal; it's well-established long-standing Wikipedia usage. They also appear when something like "John Smith" is disambiguated from other "John Smith"s by putting in dates of birth and death. To use a hyphen instead is a clear violation of WP:MOS.

It appears that they are trying to delete this article, Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#List_of_Wii_games_that_use_the_Nintendo_GameCube_controller, please give your opinion on the matter.
Thegreyanomaly (talk) 05:47, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
An editor has nominated List of Wii games that use the Nintendo GameCube controller, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Wii games that use the Nintendo GameCube controller and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Greg Tyler (t • c) 15:36, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Removal of coordinates label
[edit]Hi Stephen ... Why did you remove the geocode coordinate label with this edit? Those labels are useful when using the GeoGroupTemplate tool to generate a map of all coordinates on a page. [edit]Thanks. My source was another wikipedia article which has since deleted the geo data. That will teach me! :-) I went back and checked the original info and fixed the article.Ploversegg (talk) 16:20, 29 July 2009 (UTC)ploversegg
Thanks (coords)
[edit]Thanks for fixing the coords issue for Commerce Square. I thought I had tested it when I created it, but it doesn't matter. Thanks again. Medvedenko (talk) 03:34, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Co-ordinates
[edit]Hi, you recently made an edit to the page Raid on Dunkirk (1800) with the summary "coord correction" in which you decimalised the co-ordinates. The perhaps unintended result of this is that the pointer on the map (using Google Earth for example) is now four miles west of where it was before and where I think it should be. Can you explain you reasoning behind this edit?--Jackyd101 (talk) 06:46, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, I don't have co-ordinates, I only have a nineteenth century map. Therefore I just used the positioning system on Google Earth to identify the co-ordinates by identifying the site of the battle in relation to the map. These were the co-ordinates I was given by that system and they matched the map closely until you changed them. Please can you put the marker on the map back to the position it was in before you made your edits (or show me how to do it so that the co-ordinates used are no longer a problem for you) - I'm afraid that being "in the vicinity" is not precise enough in this instance (the site of the battle has moved to an entirely different bay). Regards--Jackyd101 (talk) 13:13, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Rancho Coordinates
[edit]I saw fix you made to co-ordinates for Rancho Los Nietos. I will go thru and add "|display=title" to the others.Emargie (talk) 19:16, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- This is really quite powerful - produces an interesting map at "Category:California ranchos". Thanks for adding it. Emargie (talk) 22:01, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Monhegan Light Coords
[edit]Question --- I have stubbed out most of the Maine lighthouses and have more recently been adding NRHP infoboxes to those that need them. I would prefer to have coords only in the Lighthouse Infobox, but the NRHP infobox needs them for its map. In the case of existing lights I have used the USCG Light List coords -- to three decimals in seconds (=3mm, which is ridiculous) because that's what the Coast Guard supplies as "official". I have generally either left the NRHP coords alone (as they come out of Elkman's NRHP infobox creator) or, if they were more than a few seconds out, adjusted so that anyone who clicks on that set to get a satellite or map view will end up close. I haven't gone out to three decimals, because I object to that much precision where the underlying accuracy is probably one decimal.
Suggestion --- If you care, may I suggest that you harmonize at the template level -- so that the NRHP infobox template, Elkman's creator, and the Lighthouse infobox template all come out the same. I might even suggest we go further -- I've been relying on the embed=yes function in the NRHP infobox, but what we really should have is a combined template (Lighthouse + NRHP), with only one set of coords.
Comment --- With two sets of coordinates already in the infoboxes, I think that adding display=title is an undesirable extra -- it takes space that would otherwise be blank and simpler is better -- our pages already have too much on them -- remember that the most viewed web page of all is also one of the very simplest, only 29 words and two type faces. coordinates for historic places
[edit]I'm impressed by the work you're doing in this area, and I'd appreciate it if you'd be more careful in supplying latitude and longitude coordinates for these places. In particular, the number of minutes (or seconds) of latitude (or longitude) cannot be 60, as it was in Belmont Hotel (Belmont, New York) and Alverson-Copeland House when you created them. I fix these when I find them, but I'm hoping that with this heads-up you can catch these errors earlier in the process. --Stepheng3 (talk) 01:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hello and thanks for the heads up about coordinates. The coordinates for the sites you cite were generated out of the Elkman tool. I'll be more careful in future.--Pubdog (talk) 09:56, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks…
[edit]…for catching this. I sometimes think "I'll just copy/paste this and change what needs to be changed" is the worst computer-inspired idea of the 20th century. Deor (talk) 13:28, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Infobox settlement
[edit]I added an image parameter: that shouldn't be a problem, I'm not sure why it is in some cases. I can fix up the longitude stuff. Rich Farmbrough, 19:20, 12 October 2009 (UTC).
- Ah! OK. Maybe I got one of the two namespace aliases Rich Farmbrough, 19:28, 12 October 2009 (UTC).
- Ok all the coords should be done, and most or all of the images. Rich Farmbrough, 23:01, 12 October 2009 (UTC).

usernames as sources
[edit]They are useful. At the present time wikipedi practice allows people to physicaly go to places and get coordinates. If people are doing that it's kinda useful to know who.©Geni 13:18, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- So "source:GPS-user-geni" or "source:GPS-wu-geni" would be acceptable? Really need to indicate who it is and gps-geni doesn't work since there are to many things "geni" can mean.©Geni 16:25, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- Since the changes ability to break existing practices wasn't discussed in advance there is no need to discuss prior to reverting it. If an acceptable solition is found it can be put back in without diffucultly.©Geni 16:28, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- To me, "Strengthen the range checking on input parms" implies that more errors would be reported. However, you're right that I didn't mention the "source=" check before I implemented it. Of course, I had no way of knowing how many errors it would uncover until it went live. Live and learn.
- As for finding an acceptable solution, are you saying that the documented "source:" parameter isn't acceptable to you? --Stepheng3 (talk) 17:52, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Your recent addition needs a citation. Do you know where you got the info from? Serendipodous 08:13, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
I'm confused by your edit here — has the "city" parameter been deprecated? Nyttend (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently it did. See this edit, which is identical to ones performed in virtually every US municipality and census-designated place article in a short period of time. It was part of {{coor dms}}; perhaps the parameter was removed when this template was redirected to {{coord}}? Nyttend (talk) 00:35, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Subcategorization of California coord missing articles by county
[edit]I've now started the subcategorization of around 3000 of the articles in Category:California articles missing geocoordinate data into their respective county subcategories. It should take a few days for this first pass of the re-coding process to complete, after which I will look at the types of articles missed in this pass, and add special cases to the code as necessary prior to a second pass to finish the job. -- The Anome (talk) 01:41, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- I've now recategorized about 3600 articles to their county subcategories by traversing the category tree. I could data mine deeper to subcategorize more of the remaining 1085 articles by looking at page content, but I think I've reached the point of diminishing returns for now. -- The Anome (talk) 01:29, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
