Hebrew / Proto-Canaanite abjads

Thank you for the link, Sputnik; please consider my comment/proposal on Talk:Alif. I am not sure if your articles should not be titled after the Proto-Canaanite/Phoenician letters, and either include Hebrew and Arabic in their scope, or else link to specialized Hebrew / Arabic sub-articles. dab () 13:36, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Sputnik -- I extended your table into {{Phoenician glyph}}, here's an example:

Ḥet
Phoenician
heth
Hebrew
ח
Aramaic
heth
Syriac
ܚ
Arabic
ح
Phonemic representationħ / x
Position in alphabet8
Numerical value8
Alphabetic derivatives of the Phoenician

what do you think of moving these 22 articles to their Phoenician titles and using this table? {{Hebrew alphabet}} would then just contain the Hebrew table, analogous to {{Arabic alphabet}}. dab () 19:16, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

I know. We have the choice of doing 22 articles on the "Canaanite" glyphs, giving each abjad a section (i.e. Hebrew specific things will be in the "Hebrew" section, etc.) - or we can leave articles on the Hebrew letters in place, and create new articles about the Canaanite glyphs in general. At present, I tend towards the former. We can still re-create articles about individual Hebrew letters (sort of like the Arabic-only Alif article) once enough Hebrew-only material accumulates. regards, dab () 22:53, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

yes -- two observations:

  • The names at Proto-Canaanite alphabet are unsourced. I wouldn't rely on them too much. The glyphs are hypothetical too. I would go after Phoenician alphabet, which gives proper sources, and the 1904 reconstructions are at least well-established. So Aleph (letter) would go to ʼāleph (or stay at Aleph (letter), in this case, if you want to avoid non-ASCII titles.
  • ToC: I suggest we make "Hebrew" a h2 section, and make "Variations"/"Significance" h3 subsections. While "Origins" would be its own h2 section before "Hebrew".

I'm off to bed now (I'm in CET), regards, dab () 00:23, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Reverted Talk Page

For your information, your talk page was reverted by Carbonite to remove a critical comment. You can see the comment in this history page. Stifle 14:26, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I've added the comment here:

As I'm sure you know, user templates are opinions shared by several members of Wikipedia. They are templates employed on individual user pages only, and do not claim to represent the official shared position of the Wikipedia collective. Still, some self-appointed dictators feel it is their responsibility to control individual expression on user pages. Template:User-AmE-0, for example, was deleted by User:Kelly Martin; after being recreated, it was tagged for deletion by User:DreamGuy and its category removed by User:Carbonite. There are but a few people who want to control personal expression on user pages at Wikipedia and hundreds of us who do not want these few to succeed. In standing together to revert tyranny, despotism and censorship of individual expression on our personal pages, we can easily overcome these dictator-wanna-bees. Wikipedia can be for the people. Please help us oppose those in the Arbitration Committee Elections who would turn Wikipedia into a dictatorship of controlled articles and user pages: Kelly Martin, Jpgordon, Fred Bauder, James F., Jayjg, and Mindspillage.

If you feel passionately about this, you can join us in alerting other users of these individual tags, that their personal expression on their user pages is being censored by people like User: Carbonite. To help, just go to any of the templates that User:Carbonite has tried to change, and alert the people in those categories that they are not alone in their outrage and opposition. --لæmäļ al diη 21:59, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

No comments or other input

I've been making some (sometimes rather substantial) contributions to the Wikipedia, focusing primaily on the philosphy section. I have a few general questions:

1) Is it normal not to receive any comments (positive or negative) on my own talk page or anywhere else for that matter after having contributed for three or four weeks?

2) Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I have received no comments and edits have rarely been made to my rather subtantial article on Jerry Fodor?? How am I supposed to know where to go with these things if I don't get any feedback and no collaboration is going on??

3) How long is the longest artcile in Wikipedia??--Lacatosias 11:49, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Empty questions on Reference Desk

Hi,

I've noticed that you're using the "please stop asking empty questions" template on the Reference Desk. You may wish to take a look at MediaZilla Bug 4273, which I think is the cause of most of these empty questions. If a user enters the "Subject/headline", and then hits Enter, the cursor doesn't move to the next textbox. Instead, a blank entry is submitted. I think that this is strongly affecting the ability of new users to use things like the Reference Desk correctly, and if the bug is affecting you, I encourage you to advocate for it to be fixed. -- Creidieki 17:36, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Sputnikcccp. Thanks for the nice welcome. I am just dropping in to say hello, but I wanted to ask you a question. There is no page for Zoo Tycoon 2, it just redirects to Zoo Tycoon. I was wondering if I should add the article, create a stub, or add a request. I have an interest in technology, and I already cleaned the Zoo Tycoon article. If you could leave an answer on my talk page, that would be great. P.S. Here is the link to my Desk.

Hi, sputnik, and thank you for writing to me. I work fast, and don't always stop to follow and read the directions. I've got a lot of photos to upload, all church related -just objects around the church - but I can't seem to find the licensing part. I upload, and write something, then look for that drop down thing where I can say it is my photo, but it isn't appearing.

Again, thanks for your kind note, and I'm glad to talk to you anytime. I put my email in my profile, and I'd be glad for you to add me to your messenger or email or whatever. I very much wish to contribute, but don't want to mess things up. :(

Hi,

Can you answer or point me to the person who could answer re: use of the like of Who's Who and it's variations as a source as it pertains to copyright issues. Have a look at the Howard P. Whidden article and let me know if I've quote too much as most of the timeline came from the Who's Who entry.

A second question pertains to HPW, son HPW (junior or II) and his son HPW (III or somesuch; he goes by the name Sandy which could be "Sandy" in the title, I suppose). I have no indication the II and III were actually used but obviously there is a problem with the same name used by three different people. How does Wiki handle that?

Thanks for your help.

I have articles on his family who were notable in many fields, biology, banking, publishing and education. HPW III is the only one from the current generation who is notable enough to include here, being a published biologist who studies shrews. If you want to see them, I can leave them later but in a hurry now.

Creating New Article

I have looked through the tutorials and other areas of Wikipedia, but still have a general question for you if you don't mind.

I wish to write an article about my cathedral. Is it wrong to go to another article that has a format I like, click edit, copy all the text there (but change and save nothing to this original article), then go to Word (or someplace), write my own material, then come back and put it in Wikipedia in a new article? Is that acceptable in this community?

Thank you,

May I ask some questions - posting new article?

здравствулте! sputnik как вы? я отлично.

I prepared an article, and I think it is ready. I have tested it a thousand times in my sandbox, but not saved it. I'm fairly satisfied with it for now. So I have a few quesitons I'd like to ask you. I have read tutorials on Wikipedia, but still have questions:

If you write an article about a church, should you let them know you did it or ask their permission? The information is just general info. about the church - nothing personal.

What is the process for submitting? Should I submit for opinion first? I mean, it isn't anything great nor controversial - just a church. Or should I simply add the article and be done?

How do categories work? How do I know which categories the church should be in?

Hello,

Rob 03:16, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

You tagged this page for speedy deletion with the reason "Article is a little too POV; and, if he was really this notable, you'd think he would have at least one google hit?". I wanted you to know that I've removed the speedy deletion tag, because "Article is a little too POV; and, if he was really this notable, you'd think he would have at least one google hit?" is not currently one of our criteria for speedy deletion. I would encourage you to use WP:PROD or WP:AFD if you still want the article to be deleted, or perhaps to add a template message to it expressing your concerns. Thanks! Stifle 13:45, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Sputnikcccp. When you create an article from an WP:AFC submission, remember to credit the original submitter in your edit summary to satisfy the GFDL. At this point, it's probably OK just to make a note about the original author in a subsequent edit summary. Also, it's helpful if you leave a reply on the submission page noting that the article has been created. Thanks, and keep up the good work. ×Meegs 14:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Good work on the Kennedy-Western article

I wanted to give you thanks and praise for being a neutral third party voice on the Kennedy-Western University article. This page was a battleground between KWU Students, like myself, and people who mostly knew nothing about the institution other than what they may have heard from entirely non-neutral sources. I believe that through trial and error we finally have an article which describes the University in a fair and honest manner, and addresses controversies regarding the institution as well.

Genesis on egg

Hi!

I would like to use your picture commons:Image:Genesis on egg.jpg in a project at the Vienna University of Technology (http://www.tuwien.ac.at). Unfortunately this project is going to be licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA (Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike), so I can't use your picture - which is licensed under the GNU-FDL - for that project. Would you please allow me to use your picture under the terms of CC-BY-SA, CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-SA? Thank you in advance. --128.131.204.14 16:11, 28 March 2006 (UTC) (Michael Glanznig, de:Benutzer:Mglanznig)

I don't know whether I should answer here or on my discussion site. But answering here seems to be the better choice. :) First of all: Thank you for changing the license. Of course I will attribute your work. As said above the project is going to be licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA and the license CC-BY requires attribution to the author of the work. A list with all people who have contributed to the project (with media and time) will be released with it.

So what's the project about? It will be some sort of multiplayer game (maybe online) created with QTVR panoramas and iShell (http://www.tribeworks.com). The player is a private investigator who has to steal back art. Artwork (like the egg) has been stolen from museums and the player has to steal it back. The game levels are various apartments where you can navigate with panoramas and interact with items to find the artwork which is hidden somewhere.

That project is part of the course multimedia production 2: interaction design at the Vienna University of Technology. Maybe it will downloadable somewhere in July. --193.170.53.9 08:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC) ()

Inspired by comments on your userpage: but what about korban pesach? must eat: 1 of 2 mitzvot ase, the punishment for non-compliance with which is karet, the other being brit mila? And that one is not really open to interpretation. (Mishkav zachor isn't either, but you have found a way, it appears.) I respectfully question [1] with edit sum rv blanking. True that an anon rm a bullet point; true also that I endorsed that rm on talk. Also true that you seem to have gotten your revert in before I managed my comment.

I may be wrong, but I just don't recall that particular theme in the work in question; it sounds to me as if the original author conflated with Carl Sagan. I don't know; and I don't see any source cited in support. Well, I'm not here to squabble. I'm rather fastidious about reverting registered editors so I hope you'll accept my endorsement of the rm and either take it off again (perhaps move to talk) or find a source in support. John Reid 19:00, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

You are completely correct; I saw an anon that had deleted a bullet point for no apparant reason nor with an edit sum. I jumped to the conclusion that it was vandalism and reverted it. I did not think to read the Talk, nor check if the comment was true; you can understand why it would be unfeasible to check on every suspicious edit that might be vandalism. I apologize for my trigger-happy finger, I have removed the bullet, and extend my sincerest apologies. Ignocite mihi, and thank you for keeping an eye out! СПУТНИКССС Р 02:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

PCSafe Adware Filter

Thanks for pointing out that this needs to be an article. I will change it to be such an article immediately and will put up all references and such to make it an article.

Can you please tell me what are the main things to do to create a legit article and not a statement so I can make these changes.

Thanks as PCSafe is going to have to layoff workers from Symantec's efforts if we cannot get the word to people about who PCSafe is and that we have been trying to help with security for nearly six years.

Best regards,

Thanks for welcoming me! Can I add pages that I looked up to my favorites or something like that?

Replacing an Image

Hi, Sputnik,

I don't understand how to replace an image. This image:

File:Anglicanrosary.jpg

needs to be replaced. I made my own photograph,

that I'd like to use to replace the one with copywrite issues. But look at the bottom of the Anglicanrosary image. It says If you can find a suitable alternative image that adequately transports the same information as this image and is under a free licence, please swap this image with the free version. Then, request deletion of this image by adding the following to the image description: or-fu-re Image:New image file name What does that mean? I don't understand the or-fu-re tag. Could you explain to me?

Thanks, Sputnik.

Sarum blue 21:22, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for doing that for me. I think I understand it now. I thought of you recently when I attended two Seder suppers recently, one of which was a Messianic Passover. Easter was absolutely fantastic - great dinner with family, Easter Vigil at the cathedral, Easter Egg hunt with the kids. Quite nice. I hope your Passover was as wonderful..... Question about writing things in other languages

I noticed the comment on your userpage that was in Hebrew. Do you need a different language keyboard to be able to contribute in different languages? I want to be able to expand the other language Wikipedias. Evan Robidoux 23:18, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

Hi Sputnikcccp, thank you for your elaborate welcome. However, in the future you may want to hold your welcome while you check to see how "new" the "newcomer" really is? Anyway, keep up the good work with the welcoming committee! I hope to see you around.  : ) --LuciferBlack 22:00, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome from me, too! It was most appreciated. And the great pointers, too!!! Chaleur 01:34, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I have a question...

How do you add thing to your page saying this like you are a Christian, vegetarian, right handed, etc? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peridot9tikal (talkcontribs)

Welcome template

Can I use the code you have for you welcoming template on mine? I won't copy you word for word, though. I just want the code for the box. Evan Robidoux 00:24, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Favours

Hi, it's me, Evan. Could you do me a favour and go to the editor review page and review me? I've been wondering what people have been thinking about me and what I do here.

Also, could you check out my welcome template and tell me what you think?

Thanks! --Evan Robidoux 23:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Shameless plug

Hi,

You may enjoy reading this: For no reason.

It talks about vegetarianism, and it may be an exercise for your Hebrew. Have fun!

Bonus question: Can you guess where is the title from? --Amir E. Aharoni 22:56, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for welcome!

Thanks much for the welcome message!

Hi! Thanks for the welcome :)

Sputnik,

Hi! :)

I've been a member of Wikipedia for months & love it! But I only recently discovered these talk pages. So I decided to add my stuff to my page. Wikipedia's a great concept & I'm looking through some of the other Wikis as well & have memberships in some of them.

Now that I've discovered there's more to this place than just reading up on information that's already here, I'm having even more fun! :)

Michelle :)

I just meant to "vandalize" your talk page to catch your attention :) --Espazolano 19:56, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Thankies

Hey, just wanna thank you for the welcomeness - muchly appriciated ya know. How many of them do you send out?--Alex uk 86 22:36, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanx!

OMG, I'm, like, sooo grateful you sent that little greeting you must be very poular around Wikipedia if you do this for everyone! Juste si vous savez, you reminded me to update my user page, and I did, so check it out. Again, I appreciate your welcome so I hope you have a GREAT DAY, WEEK, MONTH, SUMMER, YEAR, LIFE! So au revoir and, like, God Bless (or Yaweh Bless, I'm sorry, I've never spoen w/ a Jew before!) The Texas Drama King 15:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

I only now noticed your welcome text. I can't say I'm an active participant (made only one article in the Dutch wikipedia). I just put up a help question in my user page that is more a question from the readers perspective I suppose. --Kornelis 08:35, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Smile

Another welcome thanks

Tee-hee-hee - pun intended. Curious as to the CCCP in your username... I don't know many communists. Anyway, thanks. I think I'll have to start contributing a bit more... --.t. 19:04, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

  • No, I don't think there's anymore questions.
By the way, CCCP doesn't neccessarily mark a communist person. CCCP is the latin letters for the Russian for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) as per CCCP Philipwhiuk 20:06, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks from XdiabolicalX

Thank you, although I have been using the site for quite some time now. --XdiabolicalX 23:48, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the Welcome

Hello, Bonjour, Gutten Tag (oder Nacht?), Ciao!

Thanks for the welcome Sputnik!

I've been around a while, but it's nice to see a welcome message on my talk page - first message as well!

Have fun & don't let the naughty vandals get you down

You're dead right about the code sharing, sorry, got a bit ahead of myself there. Cheers, HansoSTR 2006-07-06

Lets get together!

I think we should all sit down and drink and eat and what not. I propose a meetup at Future Bakery, on the corner of Brunswick and Bloor, on Wed. August 16, 2006 @ 7pm. Lets discuss it. joshbuddy, talk 15:07, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Your welcome message template

I would've otherwise just been bold and fixed it up a little for you, but your message indicated otherwise. So, mind if I fix it up just a little? Make the wikticionary links be interwiki rather than external links, encapsulate the message in <includeonly>s (so people leaving cursory thanks don't get transcluded to people's welcome pages). Kevin_b_er 04:35, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

'tis done. See it at User:Kevin_Breitenstein/Welcometest. Try clicking the section edit link. There's a bug in mediawiki's software that let's me play some games. with how transclusion works. The wiktictionary links are now interwiki links (no more external link symbol). I would suggest you fix up your page, and then from now on, substitute the template. It may get vandalised, which would cause a boatload of newbies to wonder why their talk page has a huge image of a penis or something. Most welcome messages should be substituted anyways. Don't delete the "A section header" and "Another header", they serve as part of the trickery. The section edit link will be an edit on section #1 on the talk pages, because its the only one that appears, but its actually section #3. There's the middle section so the </noinclude> doesn't appear at the bottom of their section edit, and they don't mess with it. Hope you like it. Kevin_b_er 03:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

You mind if I blatently copy and steal your welcome template?

Please let me know. --Wslack 17:09, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

I saw the stolen text, so I just took that anyway. I'm also looking into a WP:DIR (Wikipedia:Directory) that will like to everything guide/policy/guide/tutorial here, since many don't have a nice resource on their talk page like yours. --Wslack (talk) 00:12, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Kata

--Ching-3 Hi, sorry for a taking so long to reply. If you look at the Shotokan page and its kata pages you can see I've tried to maintain the depth of the material. There was drastic changes and a lot of material has been lost. I would appreciate your help on keeping the kata pages packed with info.

Death Dark

Hey, just Death Dark here returning your message. I didn't really look at it for a while, but thanks. I'm currently working on a site for my school West Florence High School and would like to know how to put a pic in the article. It looks nice right now, but let me know how I can change it. I'm working on it with a friend, but he doesn't have a user page. Death Dark

Caption information for Franklin picture

Dear Sputnikcccp Thank you for deleting the duplication of the Rosalind Franklin image on

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Rosalind_Franklin.jpg

That is helpful.

What I am trying to do is to put a caption to accompany the picture. When I do that, from copying code I found on another page, then I get a duplication.

We'll get it sorted eventually.

All the best

Reincarnation, Esoteric interpretation

Please see reincarnation talk page. I would like to know what you don't understand about this addition, or if you think it is already covered in the article.

Your reference to Dwain

Hi, Sputnikcccp, I came to your talk page to ask you if you'd consider removing from your user page the reference to Dwain's post about homosexuals — just as a gesture of goodwill. I've had a word with Dwain, and I think he agrees that some of what he had on his user page was likely to cause unnecessary confrontation. Sometimes, I think it's good to make concessions, for the sake of helping users to get along together. I've just looked at your contributions, to see if you were online, and I see that you haven't edited since 1 December, and before that it was 17 November. I'm therefore going to be bold and remove the reference myself. Please understand, though, that I don't mean to take the decision away from you. If, when you come back, you really feel that you want to keep it, I'll respect that, though I'll be disappointed. I'm just doing this because things have got heated lately, and I want to help ease the situation. It's harder to convince a user not to make confrontational statments if another user insists on publicly displaying one of his former controversial statements. I hope you'll understand. Good luck with your university application. AnnH 00:17, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
