The Volkswagen EA855 is a 2.5-liter, turbocharged, port- and direct-injected, double overhead cam inline-5 engine manufactured by Volkswagen. It is an evolution of the prior generation EA855 inline 5, with updates including an aluminum-alloy block.
History
[edit]Audi long used five cylinder engines starting with the Audi 5000 in 1977 and continuing until 1998 when the company introduced the V6 TFSI engine. After a short hiatus, Audi brought back the inline five in 2009 with the EA855 found in the TT, RS 3, and RS Q3.

the engine block of Audi's five-cylinder engine is based on the 2.5-litre MPI aspirated engine, which is based in the 2004 Bora (or Jetta in North America and South Africa) is built; the in-line engine has a bore of 82.5 mm and a stroke of 92.8 mm, resulting in a displacement of 2480 cubic centimeters. The compression ratio is 10:1,[3] the valve control is done via a control chain.

Technical description
[edit]The biggest difference to the EA855 is the engine block, which is made of aluminum instead of grey cast iron at the EA855 evo, which saves 18.8 kg compared to its predecessor 18.8 kg.Cite error: The opening <ref>

A main difference from EA855 to EA855 evo is the weight. If a motor block made of grey cast iron was still used in the EA855, an aluminum alloy is used in the EA855 evo. The stainless steel has also been optimized in weight by reducing the diameter from 58 mm to 52 mm. Further changes were made to the pistons, connecting rods and the oil pan to save weight. The camshafts of the EA855 EVO are driven by a chain drive that sits in front of the gearbox. The cylinder walls of this engine are coated with steel applied by plasma sprays. The coating has a thickness of 0.1 to 0.2 mm. Due to further weight optimizations, for example on pistons, crankshafts, connecting rods and the oil pan, the engine became 26 kg lighter than its predecessor.Cite error: The opening <ref>

In this model, there are also innovations in the oil supply thanks to a steplessly adjustable van cell oil pump, regardless of speed-independent.
Like its predecessor, the engine has a displacement of 2480 cc, as well as a bore of 82.5 mm and a stroke of 92.8 mm, but the piston pins have been increased to 23 mm in diameter. The main bearing bolts have a thread size of M10 and the main bearings have a size of 52 mm. The main bearing shells have a special coating that reduces wear when using the automatic start-stop.
Applications
[edit]The engine is used with the DNWA code letters (motor with particle filter) and DAZA (engine without particulate filter) in the Audi TT RS FV (since 2016), Audi RS 3 (since 2017) as well as in the Audi RS Q3 F3 (since 2019). Since 2021, it has also been used in the Cupra Mould Gate VZ5, with an output of 390 hp, so the engine of the EA855 series is being used for the first time outside an Audi model.[4]
