Introduction

[edit]

My various interests include collecting: stamp collecting, coin collecting and banknotes; genealogy, history especially the British rule in what is now Pakistan and independent Pakistan, public history, exhibiting and curating, heritage sites, geography, travelling, photography and religion.

Most of my contributions on Wikipedia relate either to Pakistan or to one of my interests.

Independence Day

[edit]

It is a common misconception that Pakistan was founded on 14 August 1947 and India on 15 August 1947. Both countries came into being on the same day and at the same time, midnight, 15 August 1947.

Pakistan's first independence day celebrations were celebrated on that day. The first commemorative postage stamps of the country, released in July 1948, gave 15 August 1947 as independence day. You can see them here. Pakistan's accession to International Air Transit Agreement (1945) was also on 15 August 1947, note 9 on pg 4.

It is not sure when and why, but sometime before the 2nd anniversary, the government changed the date to 14 August and it has been celebrated ever since.

The Quaid took oath as the Governor General of Pakistan on 15 August 1947. Lord Mountbatten came to the official ceremonies which were held before 15 August 1947 in Karachi as he could not be in two places on the same day.

The above is an explanation for my changes to wikipedia relating to Pakistan's independence day. I would appreciate if in the interest of historical accuracy, my edits are left to reflect this possition.
