Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS[3]) is a public school district that serves Montgomery County, Maryland. It is the largest school district in Maryland and the 17th largest in the United States.
MCPS was the recipient of the 2010 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the highest presidential honor given to American organizations for performance excellence. The award recognizes performance excellence through innovation, improvement, and visionary leadership. MCPS is only the sixth school system to receive this award and is the largest, by far.
In addition, MCPS has earned exceptional results on two national rankings of high school performance. Newsweek magazine has ranked two Montgomery County public high schools in the top 100 high schools in the nation.
MCPS leads the state with more than 700 teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, a national recognition of professional excellence. As of the 2015–2016 school year, the district had 12,304 teachers serving 156,447 students at 204 schools. The MCPS students comes from 157 countries speaking 138 languages.
The students’ demographics include 30.2% white, 29.1% Hispanic and Latino, 21.4% Black or African American, 14.2% Asian, and less than 5.0 % of American Indian, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiian, or two or more races.
An 88.2 % of teachers have a master’s degree or equivalent. The attendance rate is 95% for the 2015-16 school year, and the average combined SAT Score (Class of 2015) is 1629. 14.2% of MCPS students participate in English for Speakers of Other Languages program (ESOL), 11.7% receive special education services, and 34.8% participate in Free and Reduced price Meals System (FARMS)
The Fiscal Year 2017 operating budget is $2.46 billion, with a 65.8% funded by Montgomery County.
Board of Education has a student member of the board (or SMOB) that has full voting rights, except in certain cases. Eric Guerci, a rising senior at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, was sworn in as the 39th Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) July 12. Guerci was reelected to serve another one-year term in April by middle and high school students.
