Saiid Kobeisy

[edit]

Saiid Kobeisy (/se.id ko.baɪ.si/, born 14 August 1978), is a Lebanese fashion designer. He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Saiid Kobeisy fashion house.[1]. Since 2002, Saiid has been the creative director of the Saiid Kobeisy fashion house where he crafts designs for women's couture and bridal dresses.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Saiid Kobeisy was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. As a teenager, he followed his father often to his boutique in Hamra, Beirut, where his love for fashion began.[3]

In an interview with Vogue Arabia, Saiid recalls, “I used to intervene with the customers to give them the advice that I thought was appropriate. It was my passion. I had an eye for it, as they say. I did not want to do anything else in life.”[4] Eventually, he attended ESMOD Beirut where he studied fashion design, and specialized in pattern-cutting.[5]

Career

[edit]

Shortly after his education at ESMOD Beirut, a brand asked Kobeisy to drive the relaunch of their fashion collection. An opportunity that afforded him the chance to design his first bridal gown.[3] This grew Kobeisy’s passion for fashion; in 2000 he started designing for private clients across the Middle East, expanding his reputation in made-to-measure evening and bridal wear.[5]

By 2002, Saiid Kobeisy opened his first atelier in Beirut, Lebanon. Later in 2005, he launched his very first couture collection.[6] Then in 2010, Kobeisy launched his first boutique in Beirut, Lebanon,[6] and later in 2012 in Dubai, where he housed read-to-wear dresses for women.[7]

After Lebanon, his decision to open a showroom in Dubai was driven by the city’s ‘opulence and extravagance’.[5] He says, “Dubai has undoubtedly cemented its position as one of the fashion capitals”[8]

In 2015, Kobeisy released his first bridal couture collection called, ‘A Vision of Love’. By 2017, his creations had been sold in over 35 countries, available in 130 stores.[7] By 2018, the Saiid Kobeisy brand established its first flagship store in Dubai, replacing the Dubai boutique previously opened in 2012.[9] Also in 2018, the brand opened another shop-in-shop boutique at the wedding gallery in London.[10]

Currently, the brand has boutiques in Beirut, Dubai, and as of August 2024, one more in Paris.[11]

Brand Journey

[edit]

Kobeisy mentions inspiration for his creations has stemmed from foreign cultures and his Lebanese culture.[12] As of 2018, Saiid Kobeisy described his brand aesthetic as, “a striking mélange of opposites, where the modern meets the classic, the sensual softens the bold, and the unexpected twist makes a lasting impression.”[13] The brand has also come to be distinguished by the handmade details on its dresses, from the beading, lace appliques, and embroidery.[5]

As times have evolved, the brand has also worked in some integrations, such as digital showrooms. In 2021, Kobeisy launched a virtual showroom where customers from across the globe can consult for and try on Kobeisy’s creations digitally. He’s even taken it a step further to design and display entire collections in an immersive virtual experience.[8]

In creating their dream gowns, brides-to-be would have an avatar modeled after their likeness, down to their skin tone, hair, and physical features. The fabrics for the bridal gowns are also digitally scanned and fitted to the avatar to simulate the fitting, movement, and style. This makes it easier for them to visualize themselves in their dream dress.[5]

The Vision of Love bridal line has two seasonal collections every year, the Spring/Summer and the Fall/Winter collection.[14] Over the years, one thing that has also been a distinct part of the brand is the Kobeisy Keepsakes. Brides who receive their dresses receive a mini-creation of their wedding dress from the same silhouette, beading, and fabric.[5]

Notable Clients

[edit]

Kobeisy has crafted designs for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez[15]; Her Majesty, Queen Rania of Jordan[16], and Nancy Ajram.[8] Heidi Klum also donned a Taffeta Draped Dress from the Spring 2024 Couture Collection for the 77th Cannes Festival.[17]

Among other celebrities who have worn Saiid Kobeisy include Majida Al Roumi, Madisin Rian[18], Jennifer Hudson[19], Claura Kiehl[20]
