The iPhone SE (2020) is a smartphone that is designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is part of the thirteenth generation of the iPhone alongside the higher-end iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models. It was announced online on April 15, 2020, with pre-orders beginning on April 22. It was officially released on April XX, 2020.[1] The iPhone SE shares the same physical design and dimensions as the iPhone 8, but has upgraded internal hardware; changes include the use of the newer Apple A13 system-on-chip, greater battery capacity, and an improved camera system.[2]
With a launch price of $399 in the United States,[1] the SE is significantly cheaper than Apple's other iPhone models.[2]
The iPhone SE is the successor to the original iPhone SE, which was launched in 2016 as a cheaper, smaller alternative to the iPhone 6s.[3]
History
[edit]Rumors of a successor to the original iPhone SE first began to circulate online in 2017.
Apple is believed to have intended to launch the SE in late March 2020.[4] However, owing to the global coronavirus pandemic, this was pushed back to April.
Launched on the iPhone 5S in 2013, Touch ID was later used on all subsequent iPhones until 2017, launched up until the iPhone X, which introduced Face ID. Touch ID has been used on all iPads since 2014's iPad Air 2, with the exception of the third and subsequent generations of the iPad Pro, where it has been discontinued in favor of Face ID.
In 2015, Apple introduced a faster second-generation Touch ID system in the iPhone 6S; a year later in 2016, it made its laptop debut in the MacBook Pro integrated on the right side of the Touch Bar. In MacBooks, each user account can have up to three fingerprints, and a total of five fingerprints across the system[5]. In 2017, Apple released the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus with Touch ID, alongside the iPhone X that instead incorporated Face ID.
Fingerprint information is stored locally in a secure enclave on the Apple A7 and later chips, not in the cloud, a design choice intended to make it impossible for users to externally access the fingerprint information.
Specifications
[edit]
Reception
[edit]The iPhone SE received generally positive reviews.[6][7][8][9][10]
Reviewers praised the value offered by the SE, which has a starting price of $399 but uses the same A13 Bionic chip as the more expensive iPhone 11 models. The speed offered by the A13 Bionic chip came in for particularly strong praise.
Criticism centered around the phone's battery life, which most reviewers stated was only just enough to last an average day. Some reviewers also noted that design, with large bezels above and below the screen, looked dated. Some also
Design
[edit]The exterior design of the iPhone SE is nearly identical to that of the iPhone 8. Like the 9, the SE uses an aluminium frame and glass front and back. The front of the phone has large bezels above and below the display, yielding a 65.6% screen-to-body ratio, and features a solid-state Home button below the display. Because the iPhone SE is fractionally larger//The iPhone SE shares the same physical sizes and dimensions, so cases designed to fit the iPhone 8 will also fit the SE. The iPhone SE is available in the colors Black, White, and (PRODUCT)RED.
Hardware
[edit]The iPhone SE uses the Apple A13 system-on-chip. It was released in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB internal storage capacities. Unlike the other thirteenth generation iPhone models, which use Face ID for biometric unlocking and authentication, the iPhone SE uses the second generation of Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor, a technology last used on an iPhone in the iPhone 8. The SE uses the same wide-angle 12 megapixel rear-facing camera as the iPhone 11 lineup, and the same 7 megapixel front-facing camera as the iPhone XS.
The SE has a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 for dust and water resistance.
The SE supports Qi-standard wireless charging.
Software
[edit]The iPhone SE originally shipped with iOS 13.4.5.
