The San Jose State – Stanford rivalry is the college football rivalry beween San Jose State University and Stanford University. As of 2012, the San Jose State Spartans and Stanford Cardinal have met 66 times, beginning in 1900 (though the modern series began in 1948).[1] The San Jose State – Stanford game was renamed the Bill Walsh Legacy Game in 2007 (Bill Walsh coached at both schools) and is generally played at Stanford Stadium, with the occasional game at Spartan Stadium.
History
[edit]The series began on October 10, 1900 (the end of the 1924 season) when Notre Dame's Four Horsemen and head coach Knute Rockne faced Stanford's Ernie Nevers and head coach Pop Warner at the 1925 Rose Bowl.[2][3][4]
After the two teams' first two meetings in 1900, they did not play each other again until playing three games in 1933, 1934, and 1935.[2] The five games were the only games until 1948. San Jose State and Stanford have played the series annually since 1948 (except in 1958, 1991, 2005, and 2010).[1]
Records
[edit]As of 2012, Stanford leads the series 51–14–1.[1] The Cardinal hold the longest win-streak in the series, with 11 wins in the first 11 meetings.[1][2] The Spartans' three-game win-streaks in 1981–1983 and 1998–2000 and their back-to-back wins in 1989 and 1990 are the school's only consecutive victories.[1] San Jose State is 1–3 at home while Stanford is 50–11–1 at home.[1][2]
