[edit]Reception
[edit]When writing about Genshin Impact's popularity outside of China, Yanchen Fan noted Xiao to be a popular character with international players. He believed Xiao's appeal to possibly be because of similarities between the roles of him and Batman, as well as his design taking inspiration from many different cultures making him more "attractive." When combining both aspects he believed to attribute to Xiao's popularity, Fan wrote that Xiao could be interpreted as Genshin Impact creating an equivalent to internationally popular superheroes, such as those created by Marvel.[1]
In October 2022, a mural designed by a high school student from Michigan that featured a design of Xiao was believed to contain "satanic imagery" by the school board as well as numerous parents. Specifically, the mural contained a design Xiao's mask, which some viewed as being the face of Satan. The mural also featured designs of characters from The Owl House, and combined the designs were believed to contain "witchcraft." Kotaku's Sisi Jiang criticized those that viewed the mural as such, and noted that this assumption of Xiao being the face of Satan directly contradicted what Xiao actually was, instead describing him as the "anti-Satan."[2]
