International Tea Promotion Association (ITPA) is a world body with focus on promotion of tea consumption, improvement of tea production standards, and enhancement of tea industry. The association aims at increasing public awareness of the many and diverse health benefits of tea, promotes scientific research on all aspects of tea production and offers valuable assistance to tea growing regions worldwide. The ITPA was established to foster these objectives, and it is hoped that through engagement with a range of actors throughout the global tea value chain, the ITPA will contribute positively towards improving the overall sustainability of the industry.
History
[edit]International Tea Promotion Association was set up to meet the demand of a single global body which could protect the interest of tea producers/marketers as well as the consumers. Tea has social and economic significance throughout the globe and establishing the ITPA aimed at the promotion of the beverage together with endorsing sustainable practices.
The ITPA has over the years offered its support in various capacities to the global tea industry through various activities. Among its key milestones are:
The development of tea certification schemes that promotes sustainable and sustainable tea production.
Marketing promotions in the international market that encourage people to take tea with a view of improving on their health.
Scholarly projects aimed at identifying new developments in the production and quality of tea, their production, and tendencies on the world market.
Organizing global tea conferences that convene professionals in the tea value chain to deliberate issues of change, progress and prospects of the sector.
In future, the ITPA will continue to cooperate with tea producing countries, specialists and international organizations in order to introduce efficient and effective management systems and support the tea industry all over the world.
Objectives
[edit]The ITPA’s goals are the focus on sustainability, innovation as well as cooperation for the development of the tea sector. These objectives include:
Promotion of Tea Consumption: The ITPA also develops campaign internationally to educate consumers on the positive effects of tea and classify tea as natural, healthy, and wholesome product.
Support for Sustainable Tea Production: The ITPA is involved in helping tea growers and processors observe sustainable production practices. It deals with conservation of soil and water and wildlife, conservation of soil and water which is an important input in agriculture.
Research and Development: The ITPA finances studies to enhance techniques in tea production, prove the health value of tea, and identify market opportunities. The findings of this research provide information that facilitates the decisions on the future of tea industry competitiveness.
International Collaboration: ITPA works with governments, non-governmental organizations, private sector and other intergovernmental organizations to formulate policies and programmers that foster the growth of tea industry. Due to its undertaking, the ITPA has assisted tea producing nations enhance their processes of producing tea, and this has enhanced the quality of the tea produced besides enhancing sustainable practices. Through the implementation of the fair trade policies, the ITPA has acting as a channel towards the economic growth of small scale producers and workers in tea production so that they are paid fairly for the work they do.
The ITPA’s campaigns on the healthy side of tea has also largely contributed to increase the global per capita tea consumption. Due to increased consumer awareness on healthy lifestyles, tea has been discovered to have antioxidant qualities, disease prevention properties and soothing qualities. Marketing embarked on by the association has played a crucial role in branding tea as an essential product in the diet of most healthy aware citizens.
Moreover, due to the ITPA’s stress on sustainable production techniques, the global tea value chain is sustainable, ethical, and environmentally sound.
