Freynestown was anciently located in the Kingdom of Ossory and derives its name from the Cambro-Norman family of "de la Freyne.". The seeds of Freynestown’s origins were sown around 1171 following the death of Diarmait Mac Murchada the Irish King of Leinster, when his son-in-law Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke alias Strongbow became Lord of Leinster.
