Hello,

I've noticed you've reverted the edit i made back to the previous one including the scam story. There are no reliable sources backing up the scam lead section you reverted. Please do well to check it. Margaretver (talk) 14:27, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

It's scam stories, plural. There's a list of references on the talk page: Talk:Frederick_Achom#Subject_again_convicted. Maproom (talk) 16:03, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

The consensus regarding links to "New York" is irrespective of the subject of the page. It concerns all links to New York. bd2412 T 16:08, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

What do you mean by a "link to New York"? New York is a city, not a publication. Maproom (talk) 13:17, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen

[edit]

Hello Maproom,

I am hoping I'm in the correct place to communicate with you on a one-to-one basis. If I recall you needed to know the title of the article it is; Junior Bandsmen Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961-1963.

I would be very grateful if you could encourage me to proceed correctly in publishing this article. If not forward this email onto someone who can please. You have probably realised I am not a Wikipedia editor or a writer of articles. I am just someone off the street who has a true story to tell, who has submitted a genuine article and photos with supported authorisation.

Do I need to resubmit this article and the authorisations again ? if so how please.

Yours faithfully Charles Dobson CD0060576 (talk) 21:09, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello CD0060576. Yes, this is a good place for one-to-one communication.
I did not need to know the title of the article. User:Dodger67 asked, near the top of the draft, "What is the actual title and subject of this draft?". You have never answered that question. Is it intended to be about a building, an institution, a group of people, or something else? The subject of an article should be indicated by its title and evident from its first sentence; neither is the case here. And why is "1961-1963" appended to the title?
Wikipedia does not exist to "tell stories". Rather, it has articles about notable subjects (click on that blue word to find what "notable" means here). I cannot tell what the intended subject of the draft is, but I still have doubts about whether it is notable. If its notability cannot be established, by references to reliable independent published sources that discuss the subject, then the article cannot be accepted. I see that the draft mentions a picture, and an article, in the Isle of Man Daily Times, but does not cite them in an acceptable way. Any experienced editor could correct the style of the citations, but few will have access to an archive holding that newspaper – I certainly don't.
I see that you have tried to supply a copyright release for an image you want to use. I am not an expert in this, but I doubt that the release is acceptable. You have provided it within the draft itself, but it ought to be sent to the authorities at Wikipedia Commons if that is where you want to upload the image. Also, it says "permission to reproduce the photograph on the Wikipedia page". That is insufficient for an image to be accepted by Wikipedia Commons. The owner of the copyright must also provide the right for everyone to redistribute copies, and to create and distribute derivative works, even for commercial purposes. You can learn more about this here.   Maproom (talk) 08:53, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

So the subject of the article is the photograph. I am sure that the photograph is not notable enough to justify a Wikipedia article. But if you want to upload the photograph to Wikimedia Commons, I think you should be able to do so, if you provide the copyright release which you have copied above. I have never myself provided a copyright release for Wikipedia Commons, but I believe it involves a moderate amount of bureaucracy. However, you may be able to bypass the bureacracy if you can persuade Mr. Kidson to create an account on Wikimedia Commons and then upload the photograph there himself. Maproom (talk) 17:07, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Maproom, I think asking Mr Kidson to create another account is disappointing to say the least. I feel rather embarrassed to do so as suggested. The issues / problems is not his fault but Wikipedia's bureaucratic machine / process (as you know). I feel the very disappointed we should be taking that route. How about Wikipedia taking responsibility for it's misgivings and try and find this article. If it would help: I could forward my email to yourself or someone else to investigate which is my preferred option or resubmit the article if it makes it easier ?. Best Regards Charles CD0060576 (talk) 21:11, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

I understand that you don't want to approach Mr. Kidson about it again. So you can submit the message from him to the authorities at Wikimedia Commons yourself. Don't ask me how to do this, I have never done it myself and I don't know how to. Or you could post the photograph to some other site, such as Facebook, where they are less bothered about respecting copyright law.
I don't understand your comment about misgivings. Wikipedia has no misgivings, or responsibility, on this issue. Resubmitting the draft would be a waste of the time of the editor who assesses it: it will certainly be rejected, as its subject is not notable. Maproom (talk) 08:34, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

You do surprise me that Wikipedia has no responsibility regarding this article

If someone tries to submit an article which is clearly not suitable for Wikipedia, then "Wikipedia", or rather the volunteers who edit it, have no responsibility to help. I have nevertheless done my best to answer your questions.

or why it can't be located.

It is still at Draft:Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63. I have been obliged to delete most of its contents, after reading it carefully and realising that it was a direct quotation from the Isle of Man Daily Times. Wikipedia is very fussy (much more so than most other web sites) about respecting copyright law, and direct quotations of such length are not acceptable on Wikipedia.

You sound very curt, off handed, disrespectful and not wanting to engage with the contributor. I respectfully request we calm down. You say this article isn't notable please explain why you come to this conclusion.

I did not say that the article isn't notable. I wrote "the photograph is not notable enough to justify a Wikipedia article". It's the subject (in this case a photograph), not the article, that is not notable.

My previous conversation goes like the with Stephen Philbrick:

[Ticket#2016070710015214] Confirmation of receipt (Re: Submiting two photo [...])04/10/2016 19:17

Dear Charles Dobson,

Unfortunately, we are extremely backlogged.

In addition, the original permission did not have a link to the image although there was an attachment. As part of our process, we attach a permission tag to the image but we have to find it. I searched for: File:Junior Bandsman Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961.jpg

But did not find it, not even in our deleted files.

Yours sincerely, Stephen Philbrick

I would be very grateful if you could advise how we could proceed. If this article needs to be in the hands of others to tweak by a professionals could take ownership, any suggestions please. This article / subject needs to be on the Wikipedia's Fulwood Barracks web pages..... Please help me if you can. Best Regards Charles CD0060576 (talk) 16:42, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

No amount of tweaking, or even professional rewriting, could make Draft:Junior Bandsman Wing Fulwood Barracks 1961-63 into an acceptable article. However you may be able to add some information to Wikipedia's article Fulwood Barracks.
As for providing an acceptable copyright release for the photograph – that is something I have never done and don't know how to do. But if it's Wikipedia Commons where you want to upload it, you would probably do best to ask for help there, rather than here on English-language WIkipedia. Maproom (talk) 20:35, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello Maproom - I'm still struggling I would like to submit a new document, unfortunately I am unable to edit the original article Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63 as it has been removed or deleted. The new article will be titled "Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen (Period 1961-1963)" The photograph you refer to has been uploaded please speak to Stephen Philbrick. If there's anything you can do or recommend the process as to how to retrieve this document to edit I would be most grateful. Yours Faithfully Charles DobsonCD0060576 (talk) 16:01, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

As I told you above, the draft is still at Draft:Junior_Bandsman_Wing_Fulwood_Barracks_1961-63. It has not been deleted. I doubt you will get an article accepted with the title "Lancastrian Brigade Junior Bandsmen (Period 1961-1963)": as well as being too long for an article title, it does not refer to a notable subject. I don't know why you want me to speak to Stephen Philbrick, and anyway I don't have contact details for him. Maproom (talk) 17:11, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

January 2017 European cold wave

[edit]

Re this edit - as shown here, the polar air mass is centred over Russia, and eastern Scandinavia, though I agree that the non-technical press reports do not make it exactly clear. If we can find a better meteorological explanation, I suggest we use it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:04, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

From the Al Jazeera source: "The reason for the frigid blast is a strong area of high pressure that has settled over western parts of the continent. The location of the high-pressure system, or anticyclone, means that the past few days have seen a cold northerly blast extend from Scandinavia to the Levant countries." This makes meteorological sense. An anticyclone, with its clockwise winds, over Western Europe would bring air from Scandinavia to the eastern Mediterranean.
The severe-weather.eu page refers to "The brutally cold airmass from Russia and Scandinavia which continues spreading across central Europe into N Balkan."
Neither is compatible with the "strong winds circulating from eastern Russia towards eastern Europe" which I removed from the article. I have no objection to the current state of the article. Maproom (talk) 10:29, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
That's fine - I was only concerned about your exclusion of Russia. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:34, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Heiner Thiel

[edit]

Dear Maproom, if i have it right, you transformed all links on the site, yes? - I wrote this and you made from it - if i have it right, now noone knows anymore that this is an article from the catalogue??? And you also erased the pagenumbers - is this really helpful to find the article to erase these both information?

Is it definitively better to sign the links like you did in the english wikipedia, or should i keep the german way to make links??? Would be thankful for an answer, kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 01:31, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Gyanda, the only edit I have made to Heiner Thiel is to replace a comma by a period at the end of the first sentence. I see from the article's edit history that AnomieBot has been changing the style of the citations. Maproom (talk) 08:48, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick answer. Now i ask myself, how can a bot change something to the worse and if i would add the missing info - would the bot erase that again? Is there a means to prevent bots to make things worse??? Kind regards, --Gyanda (talk) 15:12, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
I haven't studied the bot's edits in detail, but I believe that its conversions of "Internetquelle" to "cite web", "autor" to "last", "datum" to "date", etc., in the English-language version of the article, were improvements. Maproom (talk) 08:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

I do not wish to template a regular, but a regular should know better than to make an edit like this--which contains very, very serious BLP violations, with loaded language completely unverified by the sources (first paragraph), loaded language containing OR/synthesis based on an unreliable source (second paragraph), and chatty gossip completely unverified by anything (third paragaph). Did you seriously reinstate allegations based, apparently, on some Amazon reviews? Drmies (talk) 17:20, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

 • Look quickly, because I'm about to scrub the history of this content. Drmies (talk) 17:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
This was over a month ago, so I don't recall what the material I restored said. I reverted an unexplained deletion of content, some of it referenced; then looked at what I had restored, and redeleted some of it as unreferenced and/or irrelevant. I accept that I should have looked at it more critically (particularly in a BLP), and before restoring any of it. Maproom (talk) 22:51, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. It basically argued that this subject, who had been a victim of sexual blackmail and exploitation, ran a scam to make money off of people's desire to give to charity. It alleged fishy business dealings, working under an alias, and false advertising. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:02, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Lubrizol edit request

[edit]

Hello Maproom. I am posting here to see if you would look at a request I have for the Lubrizol Corporation page. Your January 31 edit to that page addressed part of my request and I would be interested in what you think of the rest of the request. Thank you for any advice you can give. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 13:49, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

I have made some edits as in that list of suggestions. Maproom (talk) 14:10, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the edits, Maproom. Do you have any tips on how I could get more editor engagement on this page? I have reached out to many WikiProjects, Third Opinion and Teahouse, yet the page still needs work. For example, as I write this, the About section contains two seemingly random facts about Lubrizol. I think an Operations section, such as the one I drafted or something similar, would better serve Wiki readers. Thank you for any advice you can give. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 13:43, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I have little interest in articles about companies, and no knowledge of the relevant guidelines. I've already done as much on the Lubrizol article as I feel competent to do. Maybe another posting to the Teahouse would help? Maproom (talk) 14:49, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, Maproom. I appreciate all of your help. Lz maor (Talk · COI--Lubrizol employee) 13:58, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

The page Jim Fung is using mainly references from the subjects own club website as well as containing info and bio of other people. I don't think it can pass notability but I'm not sure where to start in cleaning it up. Any thoughts? Cheers Australianblackbelt (talk) 22:54, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

The Sydney Morning Herald obituary seems a valid source. There's two other independent sources I don't have access to. Notability is marginal at best. I've deleted a section on another person – that's a common problem in martial arts biographies. Maproom (talk) 06:21, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Czech Republic just recognized the Armenian Genocide hours ago. Can you please update this map? The Czech Republic must now be dark green. Source. (By the way, it's a FB post but it's reliable since it's posted by an official newspaper account.) Étienne Dolet (talk) 20:05, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

I'll have a look. Maproom (talk) 20:20, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, I can't. That file is formally a vector file (SVG) but is effectively an unnecessarily large bitmap. Files structured like that combine all the disdavantages of vector and bitmap formats, while introducing others of their own. I can do nothing with it.
Actually that's not quite true. I can do something – I can convert it to a bitmap (a PNG), make the Czech Republic dark green, and upload it as a new file. I'll be breaching WP guidelines, which regard all SVG files as better than bitmap files even when they clearly aren't. But I'll do it anyway. Give me about 20 minutes. Maproom (talk) 20:30, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

EtienneDolet: here it is. Maproom (talk) 20:53, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks a lot Maproom! Étienne Dolet (talk) 21:08, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
EtienneDolet: to get this into use, someone must visit all the articles that use the map (they're listed at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nations_recognising_the_Armenian_Genocide.svg) and replace "Genocide.svg" by "Genocide.png". I'm willing to do that – what do you think? Maproom (talk) 21:12, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
I've linked to the updated map from Armenian Genocide. Maproom (talk) 07:14, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
EtienneDolet: I've started to work through the "File usage on other wikis" links at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nations_recognising_the_Armenian_Genocide.svg, editing the articles (not user pages, talk pages etc.) that use the map to use the .png version instead. I've gone alphabetically from a to g. I omitted fa because I wasn't able to edit there, maybe because that article is protected. I'll do some more sometime. Maproom (talk) 20:57, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Maproom! Ideally though, we should also have the .svg map updated. Or else, we're just going to get mixed up and some users may use the .svg map that's in stock, rather than the .png. I'm seeking to find an editor that can do that. If not, I'll work to have the .png map all throughout the project. Étienne Dolet (talk) 21:14, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
I've gone on up to N. Several of the articles at hy:WP are protected, no surprise there. Maproom (talk) 13:31, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

I've now done all the articles, except:

 • Farsi, probably because the article is protected
 • Polish, where it seems I have to use the Visual Editor (which I find hard enough in my own language, let alone one I can't read)

FYI - I've moved this out of draftspace and back into article space. I originally created it there, but an IP came along and added a bunch of unsourced information, which is what caused it to look unfinished. I've edited it a bit, but can find no source online to support some of the claims which I removed. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 08:30, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for removing the poorly-formatted mess.
I've no view on whether the article currently satisfies WP's notability requirements. But it might help if you could give page numbers for the two books cited. Maproom (talk) 09:17, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
I'll add them. My own view is that she does, because she's in at least two biographical dictionaries. (The websource from the gallery cites a dictionary of Canadian artists to which I have no access.) It may be borderline, but I was willing to accept even one for notability; two just cements it for me. Also she's represented in a couple of notable collections. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:37, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Ref page added - I also forgot to mention that I've put it on my watchlist, so if anyone comes and does another data dump I can hop on top of it pretty quickly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:57, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Map location errors

[edit]

Maproom,

I'm looking for some technical help. I've been fixing errors in the category Category:Location maps with different longitude and latitude precisions. I have cleaned-up all the errors in articles, and a few in Draft/User space too. The category is now empty except for 5 special cases. One is an archived Module talk page. The other 4 are all related to an Infobox Template. While not causing any "problems", I'd like to get rid of these also just to have an empty category, which I will monitor for new errors. I can probably find and fix the problem in the Module talk page; do you think that would be considered an acceptable reason to edit an archive? Or is there another solution, some way to suppress a error in this namespace from being added to the category? And what about the template? I have no idea what is causing those errors. Is this something you can look into? Or point me to someone or somewhere else? Thanks. MB 20:23, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry, this is all beyond my knowledge. I can do some things with actual map images, but I know nothing about templates. You might get a useful answer at the Map workshop. Maproom (talk) 20:43, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Draft:Uwe Marx

[edit]

Hey Maproom,

thanks for your advice on my first article at the help desk section. I edited the article for Uwe Marx and followed the guidelines for references and citation. Maybe you can take a look at my changes. I would really appreciate it.

Take care! Milan Reiter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Milan Reiter (talkcontribs) 13:14, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

I've done some minor edits.
To get the draft accepted, you (or someone) will need to find and cite some reliable independent published sources that discuss Marx. At present the draft cites nine sources, but the first relies on an interview with him, and the others are all written or co-written by him, so none is independent.
I would recommend deleting the entire "Media coverage" section. If the sources listed there can be cited in the article, then cite them so that they appear as references; if they can't, just get rid of them. Maproom (talk) 15:09, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

your change on the Kenja Communication site has interfered with a discussion about the use of the word Company or Organisation. It would be better to let it play out as Banjo has been warned about Promotional Editing by an administrator already, and has been barred. At issue seems to be the use of the word company which the Kenja group do not appear to like. They keep changing it to Organisation, and this appears to be designed to remove the evidence that the group is owned by any one, or group of people. Could you revert your edit? I believe that when preparing these messages, Legobot picks RfCs at random (subject to the constraints of Wikipedia:Feedback request service#Requests for comment) from whatever happens to be open at the time, regardless of how much comment it has received and (more significantly) regardless of age. Since the default duration for an RfC is 30 days, the chances of getting one that is more than (for example) one week old, should be something like 75%; but judging from your notes here and above, it's more like 33%. Around half of those that you have received have been open for less than 3 days. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:42, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Simona Caparrini

[edit]

Hi Maproom, I have noticed you have cancel my contribution on Simona Caparrini's page. The page I am providing is Simona Caparrini's page on e-talenta, one of the most reputable casting network system in Europe, and that's where her date of birth comes from. I am her agent and would like to keep the source and data on e-talenta in Simona Caparrini's Wikipedia's page. Please let me know what I am doing wrong so I can fix it. Thank you. Daniela — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielamoviement (talkcontribs) 14:48, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Danielamoviement: if you are Caparrini's agent, you have a conflict of interest, and ought not to make any controversial edits to the article about here. Instead, you should describe your proposed changes on the article's talk page, and let other, impartial, editors decide whether to implement them.
Also, you should reveal your position as a paid editor, in a statement on your talk page.
The source https://www.e-talenta.eu/members/profile/simona-caparrini is clearly not independent of the subject. It is even written in the first person. It therefore cannot be regarded by Wikipedia as a reliable independent source. The same is true of her IMDB entry. I have been unable to find any reliable independent published source (as required by Wikipedia) for her date of birth. I note that Google gives her date of birth as 30 July 1966, but I certainly don't regard that as reliable. Maproom (talk) 15:57, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Cinemaitaliano.info is a real web site for Italian cinema. Stefano Amadio is the editor in chief and he has received the Award Premio Meccoli "Best Web Site for Cinema"/Premio Meccoli "Miglior Sito di Cinema" in 2014 in Assisi. The web sites has thousands of pages of movie revies, interviews with Italian celebrities, and biographies of Italian actors and directors. This web site cannot be edited by external sources but only by the team of professional Italian journalists coordinated and supervised by Stefano Amadio himself. Below are the datas/statistics of the web sites emailed by Stefano Amadio each day to every professional journalist in Italy. To write that this web site is forged or not existant, and its contents are forged or false is defamatory. Stefano Amadio email: amadio@cinemaitaliano.info

I don't doubt that Cinemaitaliano.info is a real web site, and is widely used. So is IMDB. And I do not believe that Cinemaitaliano.info is any more reliable than IMDB. Both offer "profiles", created by their subjects. Maproom (talk) 19:06, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

I am not a paid editor and this is final. I don't like your accusations. I don't spend all this time on WP because we all have lives. You, on the contrary seems not to have a life and to pass all your free time on WP acting as a paid editor or as a special 'policeman of WP'. Undoing changes with more power and authority than many others contributors. On which basis? And you are not well informed at all, because what you have written here is false: Cinemaitaliano.info has not profiles that can be edited by externals contributors. The articles and profiles are written and edited by professional journalists. You should make better research before contributing to the page of other people and accusing them of writing their sources. And I suspect you have a personal interest in harming Simona CAPARRINI. There are dozens of Italian actresses on Wikipedia and there are NO independent and reliable sources to confirm their date of birth (only a few examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donatella_Finocchiaro ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Foglietta; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuliana_De_Sio; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matilde_Gioli; ecc.) and you are focusing ONLY on Simona Caparrini. Why is that? Is she an ex-girlfriend of yours? Anyhow, this dispute has really lowered my enthusiasm to contribute on WP. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielamoviement (talkcontribs) 17:57, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

You wrote "I am her agent" – I assume that she pays her agent.
According to what NatGertler wrote in this thread, "CinemaItaliano.info encourages users to submit biographies and date of birth for performers". I can't judge which of you is right, as I can't read Italian.
You accuse me of focusing on Simona Caparrini. I have made thousands of edits, only three of them to the Caparrini article. Every edit you have made has been to that article, or to add her name to a cast list. I do acknowledge that all of these have been constructive edits, except for your addition of a dubious date of birth. Maproom (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Patrick Matthew

[edit]

Hi Maproom,

that is one impressive archive going back a decade! I think you just won this episode of the internet. I fully respect and appreciate your reasoning for removing the Sutton spat stuff. It is a difficult situation which we're trying to resolve very quickly. At stake here is persuading a group in Matthew's home area that Sutton is unknowingly leading them astray. In academia, as I'm sure you know, this means the public are innocent, but the incapable researcher is liable for the consequences. The further problem is that they've just won £10K of lottery funding, and if Sutton gets his way, it'll have his mistaken claims all over the information boards that they're going to develop to mark Matthew's local legacy. Most important from my point of view, is that he is telling primary school kids his fantastic story about Matthew, and it's hard to say how that i going to impact their concept of trust and truth. His research really is dire. He really is way off mark. That Natural Histories blog is stacked with great posts challenging his claims. It's written by a highly qualified and to my mind brilliant educator. His grasp of this period of history combined with understanding about evolution is second to none. The other blog is by another excellent scholar who is very cautious and precise, everything Sutton is not. I have spent 16 months collecting more material independent of those blogs, and my hand has now been forced to publish, but unfortunately there is not enough time to go the formal route before the money is committed and Sutton screws it up for a lot of hardworking volunteers who are engaged in conserving their natural heritage and improving life for their community. None of us researchers are part of this btw. They are up in Perthshire, Scotland. I am in Edinburgh. The others are in London and Frankfurt. But truth conforms to no boundaries, and truth is what motivates us. Sutton is just fame hungry. Spend a few minutes on his twitters or many blogs and see for yourself. So, not wanting to put you in a difficult position, I'd rather negotiate something here, and not play silly games undoing and redoing on the page. Allow me to open, if you don't mind: what is it going to take to maintain our message that it has been shown, Sutton's claims are false, either on the main page, or a subsidiary thereof? Jfderry (talk) 02:05, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining the background. I'm now on my way abroad for a week's holiday, with limited internet access. So I'll be keeping out of this mess anyway, which frankly is quite a relief. Maproom (talk) 10:37, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
Good for you! Dead jealous. I will say now that I'm going to reinstate your undo's, but please, it's not personal. I just need to apply the pressure. Happy to revert, or redirect to another page etc, either upon your return, or it may have already happened, and you can see if it's sufficient / appropriate then. Meanwhile, mine's a martini. I'll be by the pool :)) Jfderry (talk) 12:09, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Anne Wilson Schaef

[edit]

You blanked User:Great mystery and created User:Great mystery/Anne Wilson Schaef. There are two problems with what you did there: Firstly, the content in question was copy-pasted or closely paraphrased from here in violation of copyright. Secondly, even if the original had been OK, there should not be copy-paste "moves" on Wikipedia because they destry attribution to the editors who originally created the content. See Help:Moving a page on how to change a page name instead. Huon (talk) 22:26, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Huon: thank you for letting me know, and for dealing with the problem. You're right about the copyvio of another site, I hadn't noticed that. And I see now that a copy-paste "move" of content created by a user in his own userspace to another page in his own userspace can still be problematical: I thereby became responsible for the copyvio. Requirements for Notable Person

[edit]

Hello Maproom (talk), you've helped me a great deal in learning more about what justifies a notable person (in the particular Wiki way), and so I'm going to rework the bio for the person I've been trying to get up. I have a couple questions for you. First, is there anyway to highlight how many times the subject has been interviewed by reputable news outlets, and asked to discuss important financial issues on the world stage. Or, what about the fact that they are called upon to be a speaker on a panel, frequently, as an expert in certain finance issues and matter (ie. Venezuela's collapse). I ask this because I have one event in which he was a key player, but I know I need two noteworthy events that he played a part in. Wondering if being a notable speaker and sought after expert can be molded into this? Lastly, if I create a new profile in the sandbox, is there any way I can point it's publication to you so that you could approve or tell me what to fix? Thank you for your help! MeredithKitz (talk) 15:54, 26 July 2017 (UTC)MeredithKitz

Hello MeredithKitz. Being interviewed, and being invited to important discussions, do not make a person notable. If reputable news outlets discuss what he did in an interview or discussion (just quoting what he said is not enough), that would help to establish him as notable.
You should not be trying to create a profile. Wikipedia does not accept profiles, it only accepts neutrally written articles.
If you create a draft of a proposed article in your sandbox, you can send me (or any other editor) a link to it and ask for an opinion. It might be better to create it as an actual draft, so that other editors feel welcome to try to improve it.
I suspect you have an undeclared conflict of interest. Please read WP:COI.

Brian Edwards

[edit]

Thank you for your message. I had to change my username from PG Productions Inc because Wiki blocked it and requested the name change. But in any event, back to my client Brian Edwards. I'm at a dead end. I don't understand how any of this Wikipedia stuff works. All I know is that the page about him (not owned by him or me as another editor pointed out) which was not what I meant in my initial message i.e. I was referring to the page about my client - I was not claiming ownership.

Brian became my client in December 2016. And to my understanding the article about him had been active for about two years. Yesterday, a producer who visited Brian's website - clicked on the Wiki link and found the page had been deleted and sent me a message. At that point, I created a Wiki account so I could seek assistance with this matter. I'm sure you have more important articles that you edit, but I would really appreciate any guidance you could provide me in taking the necessary steps to get the article back up. If there were corrections necessary, could you send me a copy of the article so that I'm aware of what the problems are? I'm not a writer or an editor and I'm not part of any Wikipedia team. I'm just trying to find the proper procedure to get the article reinstated.

Again, thanks for your message and I really appreciate your time!

Pamela Davis

Pamela,
I'm not an admin, so I have no special powers, and I can't see what the article looked like before it was deleted. If you want to see it, you could ask the admin who deleted it, Doc James, and he'll probably be willing to send you a copy. The reasons for the deletion are (I think) indicated by the symbols G5,11,TOU. I ought to be able to find out what these mean, but I've tried and failed.
As Edwards is your client, you have a conflict of interest, which you ought to declare on your user page, as explained at Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#Paid_editors. I encourage you to make this declaration: editors with a declared CoI are treated with more respect than editors with an undeclared CoI. Maproom (talk) 20:59, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Help needed on 2 subjects

[edit]

I note that you have already commented on the Futility Closet plagiarism and spamming - though I am not sure who is going to do what about it at this stage.

I've expressed my views there. I don't feel any compulsion to do more.

I also have a problem with a new editor (User:WyndingHeadland)who does not seem to understand what Wikipedia is all about. (OK, that presupposes that I do.) The article concerned is Highland Clearances and he has added, at the end of a very long talk page, a justification (in his mind) for including lots of stuff that is not supported by the sources that the article does/should rely on. Since I am more of an "article content" person than a "Wikipedia procedure" person, I am at a loss as to how to explain to this new editor the errors of his/her ways. What the new editor needs is some sort of political blog on which to express their ideas, not an on-line encyclopedia. I have randomly picked you (sorry) as someone who might be able to offer some advice on this. I am aware of the advice "leave it alone and the unhelpful editor will go away" - I used that with the last one and it worked - but now we have another one, I have a whole library of books on the subject which I have recently read, but cannot really wait another year to sort out this article. If this second problem is not one for you, where should I go for advice?
Incidentally, it has occurred to me that this apparently new editor may actually be the old problem one who has come back as a sock puppet - or do they all seem to have the same lack of logical thought processes and poor use of English? I note that this recent one seems to have some familiarity with the Wikipedia guidance which I would not expect a genuinely new editor to know, and has also deleted their talk page (which would seem consistent with someone with experience of causing trouble).
Will be offline for several hours, but if you can offer any help, it would be very welcome.
Thanks, ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 08:32, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

I've had a look at Highland Clearances, put it on my watch list, and reverted a recent edit there by, as it happens, WyndingHeadland.
I doubt it's the same new editor again. There's no shortage of opinionated new editors who fail to follow Wikipedia procedures because they don't understand them; and the Highland Clearances is a topic that elicits strong opinions. In time, they either go away, or they read and start to follow the guidelines. Maproom (talk) 09:48, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks your input - think I have a plan of action on both - I'm reverting the spam (slowly, there is rather a lot of it) and I'll research the plagiarism issue. I've seen standard/recommended Wikipedia text on the matter before and I'm sure I'll find it again. I am tempted to re-open the deletion debate on Futility Closet as it only survived due to the spammer's input. I take your point on the new user on Highland Clearances - it is a page that attracts a particular brand of unresearched nonsense - but I think that is part of the subject. I have a half-drafted answer to the new user and will get it off in a day or two. (I think he might have had an editing session on getting back from the pub.)ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 11:28, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Noting that WyndingHeadland has reverted you in Highland Clearances, I thought I should let you know that I created a talk page for this user with what I hope is a reasoned argument to consider that Wikipedia has some rules. I fear that may have had an opposite effect than that intended.ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 08:03, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
WyndingHeadland did not revert my edit to Highland Clearances. Their following edit summary even stated "Agree with previous revert." Maproom (talk) 08:49, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Yeh hypothesis

[edit]

Hello, Maproom. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Yeh hypothesis".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the db-afc, db-draft, or db-g13 code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 01:13, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Haildhar Madrasah, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for Deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discusion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Worldbruce (talk) 04:29, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Rockin' Johnny Burgin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.

Could you please take a look at the request I made at the WP:Grapics Lab /Map Workshop .I asked you because you seem to be the only one active on that page -

To ping me add Force Radical OR User:Force Radical

09:11, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Force Radical: in your request, you specified what you want shown, but not what map you want it shown on: the second image is missing. Now that I've looked at the source code for your request, I see that you wrote "File:File:India Red Corridor map.png" where you meant to write "File:India Red Corridor map.png". And now that I've looked at that map, I believe it would be possible, but difficult, to do what you want, because of all the separately-coloured subdivisions of the eastern provinces. It would be easier to adjust the border of Kashmir on the original map. I may get round to doing that; but I definitely won't have time for a few days. I suggest that you correct the link for "Map witth acceptable border" in your request, that way someone else may decide to do it. Maproom (talk) 14:15, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Nope I guess you misinterpreted me, I need a redrawing of the border of Kashmir only as per the NPOV guidelines.I will update the image when I have time-
To ping me add Force Radical OR User:Force Radical

Pay no attention to the last comment, It was written in a hurry and was clearly missed the mark. As you have said above I have updated the request with the syntax correction and added a clarification that a border adjustment of Kashmir is also okay-To ping me add Force Radical OR User:Force Radical 09:36, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for editing the Draft:Syed Hasan Askari (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Syed_Hasan_Askari) Can this be published now or what would I need to do get published. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Syedahmerraza (talkcontribs) 22:03, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

You can submit a draft for review by adding at the top. But if you submit Draft:Syed_Hasan_Askari in its current state it will be rejected. The references are not done in an acceptable way; in particular the numbers in square brackets in the text, which are supposed to be links to the references, don't link to anything. You need to read Help:Referencing for beginners, or at least look at some existing Wikipedia article, to learn how to cite references. Also, some of the references cited, in particular nos. 10, 12 and 13, contain extensive comments and credits, rather than simply specifying the sources cited. Also, the article needs to concentrate on what he has actually done, rather than on the honours he has been awarded. Maproom (talk) 22:45, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Comment on your recent post on the talk page of Energetically Modified Cement (EMC)

[edit]

I am the "Karl", referenced in your post. This article, at the time I got involved years ago, was almost certainly written primarily by Vladimir Ronin, listed in the article as the one who developed the process (an outright lie). He did not want to actually explain this quite simple process in the article, for business reasons. Instead, he wanted to use the page to promote his business with EMC (the Texas project probably being the largest). Well, I got angry, and made the mistake of getting into a heated debate with him, because I hate this sort of thing. A plague of editors then descended. After a long fracas, one of the editors partly rewrote the article, and I did minimal editing of it simply for technical accuracy. I have not touched it since. As of today, 11/16/17, the article is simply grossly inaccurate drivel. Any actual facts I put in at that time, have long since disappeared, presumably axed by Ronin editing anonymously. This entire useless article should be thrown out, and completely rewritten. Unfortunately, other than Ronin, I'm probably the only other person on the planet who could rewrite this article. Why don't I? HO, HO, HO! I've HAD IT with editing Wikipedia! I have spent untold hours, researching and carefully writing stuff to post to Wikipedia, only to have an editor take 3 seconds to hit that revert button (over and over and over again) so no one can alter his precious (wrong) text, after having spent HOURS and HOURS of my time writing and referencing my addition. I would bet almost anything, that the unsigned comment added by 2.248.162.190, on the talk page that you responded to, is Ronin. It sounds very, very, very much like him. Ronin owns this article, and still uses it to discreetly promote his business. After all, isn't this what Wikipedia is for?
