Ruination
[edit]The novel takes place in the Kingdom of Camavor[1], a realm filled with brutality and bloodshed. The narrative centers around Kalista, a determined military general and confidant to the new king, Viego[2]. Recognizing Viego's narcissistic tendencies, Kalista is motivated to alter the course of her uncle's reign. However, her ambitions take a dark turn when tragedy strikes during a royal celebration. An assassin infiltrates the gathering and fatally wounds Viego's beloved wife, Isolde, with a poisoned dagger. As the poison's effects escalate, Viego’s sanity begins to unravel, plunging the empire into chaos. Overwhelmed by grief and madness, he becomes a threat to Camavor itself. Kalista finds herself racing against time, desperate to save both her uncle and the kingdom from destruction.[3]
1.Introduction
[edit]"Ruination" is the first novel set in the League of Legends universe.[4] This high-fantasy story is based on the Ruination of Helia event, written by Anthony Reynolds and published by Riot Games Inc. on September 6, 2022.[3]
2.Origin
[edit]Following the success of the League of Legends video game released in 2009, the story and world-building have continued to evolve. With over 140 unique playable characters, the narrative has expanded significantly. One of the most popular storylines is the Ruination of the kingdom of Helia, which involves many characters from the game.
The novel explores the backstories of several playable characters, including Kalista, Thresh, Viego, Isolde, Hecarim, Ledros, and Ryze, all of whom are connected to the events surrounding the fallen kingdom of Helia.[1]
3.Plot
[edit]After the death of King Alvaro vol Kalah Heigaari, Viego Santiarul Molach vol Kalah Heigaari, the youngest son, ascended to the throne of Camavor. This only happened because Nivor vol Kalah Heigaari, the eldest son, passed away suddenly. Eighteen months after Viego's ascension, Kalista led an army of peasants, called the Host, to war against the Kingdom of Santoras. One of her soldiers, Ledros, managed to eliminate the king of Santoras, bringing victory to Camavor.
At the end of the day, unknown assassins attempted to kill Viego. However, a mysterious poison from a dagger struck Isolde instead, leaving her barely alive. Not long after the assassination attempt, Viego promoted Ledros to commander and personal guard, tasking him with protecting the now fragile queen. Meanwhile, he ordered Kalista to seek out the Blessed Isles, known in myth as Helia, believing that the divine well at the center of the Isles could cure Isolde of the poison.
Several months later, Kalista returned from the Isles. Upon her arrival, Viego ordered his army to invade the Blessed Isles. During the invasion, Viego placed Isolde’s body in the divine well, hoping it could resurrect her. Unfortunately, the resurrection led to a catastrophic event known as the Ruination, which unleashed the Black Mist, corrupting the Blessed Isles and turning them into the cursed Shadow Isles.

5.Inspiration
[edit]The story of ruination draws inspiration from the captivating legend of Tristan and Iseult, also referred to as Tristan and Isolde and other variations. This medieval chivalric romance, which has been retold in many forms since the 12th century, offers rich themes for exploration. Rooted in a Celtic legend, the tale presents a tragic narrative focused on the forbidden love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult during the era of King Arthur. The journey begins with Tristan tasked to escort Iseult from Ireland to marry his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. However, their plans take a dramatic turn when they inadvertently consume a love potion, leading to a profound yet forbidden connection that challenges their destinies. This timeless story prompts reflection on themes of love, loyalty, and the complexities of human relationships.[5]
6.Sequel and prequel
[edit]In 2021, Riot Games expanded the League of Legends universe with "Ruined King: A League of Legends Story", a turn-based role-playing game developed by Airship Syndicate and published by Riot Forge. This game features a diverse cast of beloved characters, each with unique abilities, and invites players to explore iconic settings from the League of Legends lore. The story follows a group of champions as they confront the black mist threatening the land, a central element tied to the "Ruination" novel. With strategic turn-based combat requiring careful planning and teamwork, "Ruined King" offers both newcomers and longtime fans an engaging adventure to experience the captivating world of Runeterra.[6]
