Education Program:Drake University/Global Youth Studies (Fall 2013)

Hi! My name is Laura, and I am in the course Global Youth Studies. I hope to have fun!

Research Topic

[edit]
  • For my research topic, I plan to pursue the youth of Denmark. Denmark interests me because I have some Danish heritage. I want to learn more about the country my ancestors came from. What better way to learn than in a course through learning about Denmark's youth!
  • Topics about Denmark's youth I plan to look into include: education, employment, health, language, sports, arts, and demographics. I am curious to learn about Denmark's education system and how education affects Denmark's youth and their choices. I want to learn what age youth start employment and what are their types of employement as youth. I'm interested as to what music and athletics are important to their youth and why. Also, I am curious as to what languages they speak and when they learn them. As I further my research, I hope other Denmark youth topics will cross my path as well, and I will be able to incorporate them to my page, too.
  • Since there is no specific page on Wikipedia for the youth in Denmark, I have thought of several potential titles for my page. The titles are: "Denmark Youth," "Youth in Denmark," or "Danish Youth." Currently, I am leaning toward "Youth in Denmark" since there are other Wikipedia sites on youth in certain countries that are listed similarly to that, such as "Youth in Cambodia." If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great, too.
  • I am looking forward to this project and the research with it!

Research Proposal

[edit]
  • My planned research topic is "Youth in Denmark," but as I was looking for information on EBSCO, I am considering another option. I noticed there were a lot of articles about alcohol and Denmark youth. A suggestion on my talk page was to focus in on a topic about Denmark youth. Discussing the alcohol and Denmark youth relationship might be a unique idea. But, I have not yet decided which one I should go forward with. I hope receiving feedback here and in class will help make my research topic decision.
  • If I were to pick "Youth in Denmark," I would follow other "Youth in X" Wikipedia pages. I would describe the term of "Denmark Youth" at the beginning of page and continue with the sections: demographics, education, employment, health, and perhaps a "culture" section discussing language, alcohol use, and social activities. While looking on EBSCO, I wrote down article titles with information that'd go under these five topics. I also tried to keep it to articles that were within five years old. I want my information fresh and relevant. I looked at a few Wikipedia sties with information on Denmark to see what their sources/references where. Is that okay to do when looking for information? I found a website in the references section from the Wikipedia site "Education in Denmark" that had great information on Denmark's education, but I am not sure if other websites are credible sources for this project. I could not find any books in the library particularly on Denmark's youth, but perhaps, I could look for Denmark books that might include information on youth.
  • If I were to pick Denmark's youth relationship with alcohol, I would start discussing the use of alcohol among youth and continue with categorized sections. Based off the articles I saw on EBSCO, I was able to sort out categories with this topic and write down article titles with information relevant to the categories. The categories are: family relationships, school, social class, and peers. Family relationship would discuss how parental alcohol abuse impacts youth's lives and how youth's relationship with parents are affected by alcohol. School and social class might tie into together since socio-economic variables at school district levels impacts youth alcohol usage. I would see how that plays out and what information I could find. In the peer’s section, I would discuss how peer pressure plays a role into youth’s alcohol usage. If I were to go forward with this topic, I feel I might be restricted on information and worry there might not be enough. Yet, it would narrow down how many articles to sort through for information. I would search on EBSCO for more articles. I tried looking on other databases for articles from the Cowles Library site, but I could never find relevant information on my searches for Denmark youth. What are other good search databases for articles? I would be willing to look there as well.

  • I hope to do more research this weekend. Those listed above are possible sources for my article. However, I am having a little trouble finding information on youth health in Denmark. Any suggestions on searching for that would be helpful. Thank you!
