Life in Marawi City dumpsite area
[edit]Lainisah Maruhom Sumpingan (talk) 07:21, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
An area located at Caniogan Papandayan, Marawi City is known to be the dumpsite of Province of Lanao del Sur. This is where 80 houses were built composing of 150 households.
For decades, innocent families used to live there. Tricycle driving is the common income source of most families of dumpsite. Accordingly, half of each family income comes from waste trading or known as “Pangangalakal ng Basura”. Other rarely eat 3 times a day.
Due to the crisis brought about by COVID-19, waste trading became a challenge to every family. Thus, it made their livelihood more difficult than the usual.
Hata, not her real name, is one of the residents of Marawi City dumpsite. She was born and lived there with her family. She is now 45 years old and married to Hayyan, not his real name. They have five children. “Pangangalakal ng Basura” is their main source of income but due to crisis, they have been experiencing difficulties in waste trading.
Despite difficulties and poverty, Hata and Hayyan were able to send their children to school nearby the dumpsite. Sending them to school eases her because she ensures the future of her children.
Asked about her needs. Hata only replied, “O kabgan kami sa kauyagan ami na tanto dn oto ko myakapiya-piya. O makabangon kami sa ba-bo kauyagan a kadagang sa b abo mga li’tha na anami pkibgay ko mga wata ami so b abo kapiya a kakan.”(It will be so much better if we will be provided livelihood. If we will be provided livelihood such as small store so that we can provide our children healthy food.)
The most difficult that every family there have been experiencing is when one of their children becomes sick. It makes them worry so much for they have nothing to do with it. “Da pirak ami a baa mi kibayad sa hospital, geto e pinaka maregen a pka-ranasan ami, ayabo a pkatago sa piker ami na kasarakan ko Allah, ti andamanay da baa mi pki-hospital ko mga wata ami”, says Hata. (We have nothing to pay to the hospital, this is the most challenging on our part. We entrust everything to god. We have nothing to do to send our children to the hospital.)
