Vietnam football is controlled by the Vietnam Football Federation. Incidents of match-fixing football (Vietnamese: Bóng đá dàn xếp tỷ số) has been recurring issues in Vietnam. Many historic events have led up to the point at which match-fixing and illegal gambling have become so common in Vietnam.
History
[edit]- On December 2005, members of the national soccer team of Vietnam were caught purposely altering the score in a game against Burma. The seven players and one former football player was found guilty in the court of Ho Chi Minh City. The players were promised roughly $15,000 by the leader of a gambling ring for holding the score down to one additional goal on Vietnam's behalf. This is the first time that Vietnamese national players were caught match-fixing.[1]
- On Janurary 2006, the head coach of Pjico Song Lam Nghe An and a former player of theclub bribed another local team so that they could win a championship game easily. Both were prosecuted and charged for the crimes of rigging the 2000-2001 national tournament.[2]
- On Janurary 2007, seven players of the national soccer team of Vietnam were caught holding down scores against Myanmar in exchange for bribe money. This occured in the SEA Games a tournament that includes all the countries in Southeast Asia which go against each other in football matches.[3]
- On November 2014, six Vietnamese were banned by the Asian Football Confederation for their part in match-fixing. These six players were apart of Dong Nai FC and were going to split up a bit over $15,000. They were accused of fixing a match on July 20th, midway into the V.League games. The ban was initiated after a request from the Vietnam Football Federation.[4]
- On December 2023, 5 V.league 2 players who played for Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu were caught in connection to a large gambling ring in Vietnam. Allegedly they had agreed to intentionally lose their game against Đà Nẵng FC to recieve a sum of money. Players involved are Nguyễn Sơn Hải, Phạm Văn Phong, Lê Bằng Gia Huy, Nguyễn Quang Huy, and Trần Kỳ Anh.[5]
- On July 2024, the Criminal Police Department of Vietnam with cooperation from police of Khanh Hoa stopped gambling transactions for multiple football games under the website Bong88.com. Police have found bets by gambling ring leader Cao Dinh Hung on various Vietnamese football matches.[6]
Laws
[edit]- Years before 2003, Vietnam made all forms of gambling illegal. However, some hotels are allowed to offer gambling services to people who hold foreign passports, essesntially tourists. Multiple illegal gambling services do make over $30,000 USD each day.[7]
- Most forms of local gambling have been banned and have been banned for many years in Vietnam's history. Sports betting is illegal in the country aswell as local run gambling. There are some exceptions such as state-run lotteries.[8]
- On June 14th, 2018, Vietnam's National Assembly passed a bill to legalize sports betting as long as there is government over looking. This followed a law that was passed on March 2017 that legalized international football betting and animal races.[9]
