Appearance
Autoimmune disease is the pathologic consequence of elements of adaptive immunity losing tolerance to 'self'. The categorization of a disease as autoimmune in nature is subject to debate, as autoimmune manifestations (such as anti-nuclear antibodies) are observed in a variety of diseases. Strict criteria, such as Witebsky's postulates have been put forward to codify the definition of autoimmune disease. In many cases, provisional classification of a disease as being autoimmune in nature, is based on limited clinical evidence.
