[edit]

2011 (MMXI) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2011th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 11th year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 2nd year of the 2010s decade.

2011 saw the continued events of the Arab Spring, with Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain all becoming hotspots for protests, with some ending in regime change and others devolving into prolonged civil wars. The spring itself additionally incited the rise of the Islamic State[a], which would grow to become a major enemy of most nations in the following years.
