History
[edit]Amber Road was first proposed in 1921 as a motion by C. F. J. Green, then president of the Municipal Commission of Singapore. The motion was to open a new road from East Coast Road to Mandalay Villa named "Amber Road". The name "Amber" is associated with Jewish Businessman Joseph Aaron Elias and his family, with Elias repeatedly urging for the road's construction.[a] The road is thought to be named after Serena Elias's (Joseph's mother) Amber Trust Fund, which aided impoverished Jewish youths' education. Serena was also referred to as "Sarina Elias Amber" in news articles during the 1910's. According to The Jews of Singapore, the Amber Trust Fund was named after Serena's family. However, Amber could also refer Joseph Elias's telegraphic line and racehorses.
A prominent landmark was Kampung Amber. Kampung Amber was first mentioned in a 1928 news article on the Malay Junior Leauge

[edit]Notes
[edit]- ^ Both articles may have erroneously reported it as "A. J. Elias". "A. J. Elias" refers to Aaron Joseph Elias, Joseph Elias's father. Aaron Elias died in 1902.
