In this module, you will learn how to add and use media files (pictures) to Wikipedia.
Assignment 1: In most cases, Wikipedia can only accepts images which are freely licenced. Complete (read) the image and copyright tutorial at Wikimedia Commons at commons:Commons:First_steps
Assignment 2: Upload a file to Wikimedia Commons. Make sure this file is allowed on Commons, as explained in the previous step (I recommend uploading pictures you took yourself). Make sure to add a caption (description), chose a correct licence, and then add categories as you learned in the previous activity.
Assignment 3: Now submit a photo for the Commons monthly challenge: commons:Commons:Photo_challenge#Challenges_open_for_submission . Again, make sure that any photo you upload has a description and categories, and of course that it is free.
Assignment 4: Take a look at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_picture_candidates or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates and leave a review comment.
Assignment 5: Can you fullfill an image request? See for example Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in China or Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Korea
Read the guide at Wikipedia:Finding images tutorial and my guide below.
Sometimes an image alraedy exists in the article (in which case you should remove the request template or code from the talk page). Sometimes the image can be found in linked article in another language (ex. Chinese or Korean) and just needs to be added to the English article. If not, maybe an image already exists on Wikimedia Commons - go to Wikimedia Commons and search it (using English, Chinese and/or Korean - many images do not have names/captions in all languages; also try using alternative names). Check corresponding categories on Commons. And try this interesting gadget: Wikiview. If this fails, the image may exist somwehere else on the Internet (but most images on the Internet are not free!). See this guide for how to look for free images on the Internet that you can add to Wikipedia (note that Wikipedia does not accept noncommercial licences). Another good tool is Openverse. Note that many images this method find are alraedy on Wikimedia Commons - do not reupload an image that is alraedy here :)
After you add an image, remove the request code/template from the talk page.
Assignment 6: If you want to upload a non-free image to Wikipedia - we can do this IF the copyright holder (image owner) gives us permission. Find an image you want to use, then identify the owner and send them an email using the form from commons:Commons:Email templates. If they reply and agree, you can get extra points!
Assignment 7: Pictures can be deleted. Why? Review the ongoing deletion discussions at commons:Commons:Deletion_requests (scroll to the bottom). Answer the following discussion question (you can upload it to your blog): what can you do to ensure your pictures will not be deleted?
Assignment 8: Answer the following discussion question (you can upload it to your blog): how can uploading media to Wikipedia (Wikimedia Commons) help you get a job, later in your job (help with promotion) and in personal life? (Hint: you can ask AI for the answer…)
