Medals Wikiportal
Since I noticed your interested in military medals, I wanted to let you know I created a Wikiportal about it. Located at User:Zscout370/ODM Portal, it is coordinate all users on articles associated with Orders, Decorations and Medals (OMD). All nations medals can be discussed. It mainly just has a listing of OMD articles on Peer Review, Featured articled candidates and those who becamed featured. Of course, I can add a listing for stub articles, request for pictures, requests for comments, and of course, votes for deletion (which should be rare). If you have any questions, just let me know. anon user spreading Polish names randomly
Hi Halibutt, could you please look at contributions by anon user [2]. He spread several Polish names around into several articles in what I see an attempt to make a point or smth. Anyway, instead of myself choosing what to revert using my own judgement, could you please look at it first and revert or correct in whatever way that seems to make sense. Thanks! -Irpen June 30, 2005 20:06 (UTC)
- So, someone is randomly "spreading Polish names around" in "an attempt to make a point" - and you are turning to our friend Halibutt of all people? :O Seems like a typical case of setting a thief to catch a thief I would say... :D (just kidding). --Thorsten1 30 June 2005 20:38 (UTC)
- Well, I didn't follow closely the battles on the Western Front, but on the Eastern front things weren't bad, save the recent edit war at Kiev on June 9-10 (in wich Halibutt took no part). While Kijow ended up not making it to the very first line of the article (this was what it was all about), that rv war resulted in an actual improvement of the article thanks to the editors' cooperation. I don't object to inclusion of Polish names to Ukrainian cities when the context warrants and the anon editor have simply done it sloppy. Once these are ordered, I could judge them by actual merit and decide whether I would like to revert and modify them. Regards, -Irpen June 30, 2005 21:48 (UTC)

You tagged this image for speedy deletion. Unfortunely, because of how Template:Infobox Warsaw is currently coded, I am going to have to delete Image:Warszawa Ursynów.png instead. Reply to Talk:Polish Army
- The matter is pretty clear to me. We have several names here.
- Wojsko Polskie - used officially, Polish
- Polish Army - used officially, English, used in English since times immemorial, unambiguous
- Polish Armed Forces - same pros as above, with the difference that it doesn't sound
- Military of Poland - not used officially, not used in English outside of wikipedia, ambiguous
- User:Halibutt July 1, 2005 11:23 (UTC)
- But #2 is ambiguous, because "Army" in English means a primarily land-based force --- which is historically what most military forces were. If we're talking about medieval, Wojciech Kossak subject matter, then it's pretty clear what "Polish Army" means. Poland didn't have an air force, blue-water capable navy etc. in that era. Now it's a bit more prolematic. A literal translation of Wojsko Polskie leads to a confusing situation in English. Aside from that, there are consistency issues. Every other article (except Canada) is titled "Military of X." I can't find any official Iranian websites using the term Military of Iran (which the Iranians call Artesh in Persian), and ditto for Military of Greece, but maybe that's because their staff have better things to do than write Wikipedia articles.
- What this issue really boils down to is the problem of literality in translation. If I were to translate the native name for the Greek language (η Ελληνική Γλώσσα) liteally, it would be "The Greek Tongue." If I translated the colloquial name for the language, the neuter plural Ελληνικά, it would translate as "Greeks." Both look bizarre to a native English speaker, which is why we translate it as "Greek language" instead.
- Slippery slope: Calling the armed forces of Poland together the "Polish Army" will lead lead to a perception of cluelessness and, inevitably, to dumb Polak jokes. Suppose there is a Wikimeet and someone brings this up, saying "Can you believe those dumb Polaks?" I, being partly of Polish descent, will be forced to demand satisfaction for this insult, and could be drawn into a fistfight or duel over the issue, which could lead to mine or another's death or a prison sentence. Is that what you want Halibutt? No, of course not. So change your vote! --Jpbrenna 4 July 2005 02:20 (UTC)

<begin cliché-filled text> Exercitus Polonus would have been the far better choice. For properly classicizing military propaganda, see Francis Glass, Washingtonii Vita J.N. Reynolds, Ed. CAPUT NONUM:
- ...Exercitus Americanus jam ex septem hominum millibus constabat, etsi, dum sese per ... eodem, tamen, temporis puncto, omnes in hostium conspectum venere...
Polish Latin must have been tainted by the vulgar idiom of those Dacian hordes dwelling beyond the Carpathians, who say Armata polonă Well, all I have to say is "Daci non supra grammaticos!"
Let me know when the dust settles on the Polish Army naming issue and I'll start a Latin Wikipedia stub based on whichever name finally prevails. I see you've been mustering your troops on the discussion page to march to the sound of the guns. Well, good luck and Godspeed! Be BOLD in your edits! L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace! Seriously — I think that "Armed Forces of Poland" was the worst possible choice! It is a sad day for Wikipedia.
We must, however, move on. What should the Latin article be called? You said that the Polish Army was called the "Armata Polona" in the interwar period, at least on recruiting posters. I said exercitus was better, but of course, if we are talking about the combined-arms service, then armata is the better choice; either it is a substantive npl adjective "Armed Poland" or, interpreting it as the Greek npl αρμάτα "Polish Arms." Both fit the Polish system better than "exercitus," which would just be the Land Forces. So, I'm off to create a stipula. Look for it in the "other languages" tab. --Jpbrenna 21:42, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

My problems with your obscene "black book"
The "black book" was legitimately deleted via VfD, at which time it was moved by Nohat to your user space at User:Halibutt/Black Book. After it was moved to your user space, several admins going as high as User:Jimbo Wales, the founder of Wikipedia itself, registered their disapproval of the entire idea, if your memory fails you, please review User talk:Halibutt/Black Book. Thereafter, the entire disgusting thing was copied over to User:Halibutt/Black book, a dispicable but sneaky way to remove the glaring eye of criticism while maintaining this little trollish trove of animosity for users who have fallen out of grace with Polish wikipedians. By all accounts, for what it's worth, it appears that the primary mastermind behind this whole grotesque miscarriage of civility is the unforgivable troll User:Witkacy, who seems to think that anything related to Poland is his personal domain, and that any wikipedian who even dares glance askance at his ludicrous ideas is guilty of "anti-Polonism". That diatribe aside, I see NO evidence whatsoever that you've attempted in any way whatsoever to have this trollishness removed from your userspace. I asked of you nearly 5 days ago why I was listed in this obscene "black book" and have YET to receive anything in the way of a response. If this repulsive and revolting miscarriage of the Wikipedian spirit you call a "black book" is meant to serve any "good" purpose, although with such an obscene name I fail to see how it could possibly do so, I DEMAND that you address my inquiry at User talk:Halibutt/Black book. If you have no explanation, then I DEMAND that you address how such an egregious charge could be levied against me in YOUR user space without so much as a whimper of protest from you. If you truly aren't aware that you were being used by that obscene troll Witkacy, I submit to you that you are either incompetent or a liar. In any case, I am EXTREMELY offended that my name has been befouled in your userspace and if you truly were unaware of the extent to which I was abused by the godforsaken troll Witkacy, you should at least offer me your humblest apologies. As I've said elsewhere, the grotesque denizen of the underside of bridges, the troll Witkacy has been reverted (see this edit), but the fact remains that you have done NOTHING to prevent your userspace from being used to besmirch my name for nearly a month. I am horribly appalled and grossly offended. Tomer TALK 11:55, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
- I take it back. I see the obscene troll Witkacy has relisted me as an offender of all things Polish. I'm sure my friends of Polish extraction (including 2 of my uncles) would be very surprised to learn that I'm one of the foremost proponents of this ludicrous notion of "Anti-Polonism". Thank you very much for your time and attention. Tomer TALK 12:16, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Your claim that you are absolved of all responsibility through ignorance is ludicrous. THE PAGE IS IN YOUR USERSPACE. I have already admitted my ignorance in assuming that the widespread notion of "Antipolonism" was a result of brainwashing by the Polish educational system (which was NOT meant as an assault on Poles by any far stretch of the imagination, rather it was meant as an assault on the Soviet-dominated educational system that ruled Polish education for 45 years). Your insistence on allowing this to continue rather than engaging me in discussion, however, indicates that you're more than willing to allow yourself to be used in an effort by others to to besmirch the names of wikipedians with whom they disagree. This is foul in the extreme. If you have an issue with me, talk to me about it. Don't allow yourself to be abused by others as a middleman in a trollish attack on my character. To do so lends your support to the attack, and I don't honestly believe that's the kind of person you are. If I've said something to offend you, you should address it, not allow someone else to ride like a monkey on your back using your username to denigrate me, while you say "I can't do anything about it". If you don't approve, demand that an admin delete the page. If you DO approve, address the problem, in this case, "ME", as I've asked you to THREE TIMES NOW. If, on the other hand, you're happy to lay down and let Witkacy use you as a pawn in his game of denigrating other Wikipedians, in clear violation of Wikipedia policy, so be it. If that's the case, I'll be more than happy to include you in my impending RfC concerning him and his obscene behavior. Tomer TALK 12:30, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Cyknij czarna ksiege, przenioslem do siebie. I sorry za tworzenie problemow przez tego wyzej :)--Witkacy 21:43, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
Halibutt, the Black Book (two copies of it, at least) are in your User space. Consequently, you do have to take some responsibility for those pages. From the discussions above and elsewhere, it should be painfully obvious that the Black Book model does not help with dispute resolution—rather, it serves to further inflame. It is fully within your power to remove the names from the list or take down the page entirely—this is your User space. I don't really want to have to run through the flame wars and unpleasantness that were associated with retiring the Black Book the last time. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 14:31, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

W każdym razie, teraz możemy to naprawić. Pibwl ←« 10:54, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

Katyn records
I want to find out more about one of the names on the Katyń Memorial Wall - he might be a relative. Are there any military records available on the executed, or are they sitting in a Russian vault somewhere? The Wikipedia article says: Despite earlier declarations, 116 out of 183 volumes of files gathered during the Russian investigation, as well as the decision to put an end to it, were classified. So I know what the answer will probably be, but I was just wondering if you know of any sources (even if they are written in that bourgeois capitalist patois known as "Polish"). --Jpbrenna 00:45, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, I was going to ask Wiktacy about this, but I'm not sure where on his page to post non-"Black Book"-related discussions. http://www.indeks.karta.org.pl/szczegoly.asp?id=10244 It says that man died 1940, but then it says "camp?" Does that just mean he
diedwas murdered in the camp of Ostashkov and was buried in Miednoye?
- Franciszek Kaliszewski was my great-grandfather's name, and my great-uncle's -- but both first and last are so common in Poland that I'm not sure he's a relative. I don't know as much about that side of the family, just his parents' first names. I don't have immigration records for them like I do for his wife's family. I think his family were from somewhere in the Prussian partition (based on the fact that he left behind a book about the German-Polish frontier). And I think his Ciotka Fushie(she was his aunt, but they were the same age) who used to keep track of the relatives and visit them when she owned a travel agency tried to reinitiate contact after the war but had no luck. Contact with bourgeois capitalist relatives in America was probably officially discouraged at that time, so it's not surprising. Doesn't mean anyone died. So, no proof that this is a relative, just the distressing possibility.
- The record I was originally looking for was Ignacy Kalka, but he's not in that database, just on the wall. I don't suppose there are any other databases I could try? --Jpbrenna 07:12, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

Car theft
Hi Halibutt, thanks for your well-intentioned edit regarding car thefts on Anti-Polonism. Reasonable edits are few and far between in the history of this article. Still, I decided to remove it; let me explain why. Although I am easily upset by anti-Polish stereotypes, and even wrote to the German foreign office once and asked them to remove overstated traveller warnings on crime in Poland, I can't discuss away the fact that a disproportionately high number of Poles were involved in organised car theft in Germany throughout the 1990s. Police statistics speak a clear language here. That German public opinion elevated "car thief" to being almost synonymous with "Pole" is regrettable. That's how stereotyping works, like it or not, and we should certainly work against such stereotyping wherever possible and necessary on within the scope of an encyclopedia. Having said that, we should also stick to facts, and not let political correctness go at the expense of factual correctness. No offence, --Thorsten1 19:36, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

She was living in Texas, and wanted to find the descendents of her relatives who had emigrated to the United States. I replied to her message, but I am still waiting to hear from her. I added her to my Yahoo buddy list, but she never signs-in. Her Yahoo name is a combination of Polish and macaronic Latin, which makes me certain she is my cousin, but alas, I cannot get in touch with her. Anyway, the point is, if I cannot even track down my own flesh-and-blood, there is very little reason to worry about your girlfriend. I don't even know what she looks like. Besides, how could I hope to compete with your Kirk Douglas jaw and dashing No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron scarf? ;) --Jpbrenna 18:11, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
- No, I can't compete. I might be able to find an appropriate scarf, but I can't afford a chin job.
- I'm not a big fan of the oversized "theme" restaurants either, but you shouldn't be so hard on country music. Some of the old stuff is very good. I don't remember Eco writing about American chain restaurants - I thought he wrote about monks solving murder mysteries and Italians going on adventures to Constantinople and the Middle East. I think he stole a fair ammount of material from Herodotus in Baudolino, but there are apparently no Herodoteans left to initiate a lawsuit against him.
- Actually, you never did mention your girlfriend directly to me. Somehow in one of our exchanges, I accidentally added your talk page to my watchlist. I resisted commenting on earlier entertaining exchanges that I was eavesdropping on, but the temptation overcame me at last. I think it was seeing the schizophrenic comment added to your userpage that finally pushed me over the edge ;)--Jpbrenna 03:54, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
New section
Ok, I should get to bed, but I have a few more questions:
- Is your gf a pilot? Why is she wearing that headeset?
- What the ____ is she doing in Rocky Top, TN? She could have at least moved to Nashville, or scenic Gatlinburg. If she came to America to learn how to speak English, why did she move to a part where the natives probably don't speak it that well? I've had to work with people who come from them thar hills, and most times, t'aint set right with me t'all. If I'd hadn' mah druthers, I wouldn'ta done it.
- Can you make more money teaching English to adults in Poland than you can as a pilot? If so, where do I sign up?
- Somebody really created a 3-D of the Last Supper? I never even heard about that, but I'm not surprised. But if you really want to see something bizarre, you should go visit your neighbors in Germany and check out the weird sound-and-light show you are forced to take in at the Frankfurt airport as you ride the people mover to your connecting flight. Lights reflect off of bizarre cutouts while something resembling the sound of a man urinating (and in fact, it probably is a recording of a man urinating) echo off the walls, and unfortunately, it's all 3-D and very real. So, to paraphrase that wise old Jewish carpenter: "European, remove the urine from thine own eye before thou remarkest the mote in thy brother's!" Of course, that's "Old Europe," right, so I shouldn't have even brought this up. --Jpbrenna 08:23, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
Enigma pic
Hi, I think we don't need that additional Enigma pic, particularly as it's non-free. See Talk:Enigma machine. — Matt Crypto 17:45, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
Poljani
This is one of the Lechitic tribes whence the Poles get their name. On the other hand, the name of the tribe isn't exclusively Polish. --VKokielov 22:23, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
- As you will. :) --VKokielov 05:53, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Hello, There's an oddly named article Kgwinðbunt with an Icelandic letter in it. I tried to Google based on the names of the father and son mentioned in the article, and I came up with an article in Polish. I can read some Russian, so I can guess some what it says, but not fully understand it. If you have time, can you briefly take a look? I ask because you're active on Lithuanian/Polish historical issues. -- Curps 09:30, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
I see User:Naive cynic has already moved the article to Gimbut. I added that link to it as an external link, but decided not to add any additional text to the page itself. Thanks for your help. -- Curps 08:49, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
