Van Buren State Park
My guess is that it is in the township, but I need to check a map. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:03, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- The USGS topographical map shows it as in Allen Township, Hancock County, Ohio, but townships in Ohio are not incorporated and land from them is fairly easy to annex. Still, the village of Van Buren really would have no advantage to annexing the park - you can't tax it. The stadium (oval) and park are visible in this free satellite image here. RE: Van Buren State Park
Thanks for your message regarding the Van Buren State Park. While my photo appears not to have made the cut, I see that your DYK was accepted and is currently in the Template talk:Did you know#Promoted entries queue #5. Kudos to you, sir, for your excellent work! --Kralizec! (talk) 22:39, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Hook idea
Hi, saw your latest article and had an idea for a DYK hook. DYK ... that the land that became Quail Hollow State Park was owned by only two families between its settling in 1820 and its sale to Ohio as a park in 1975? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:50, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- Glad you like the hook and I love ABCs of DYK idea. There must be a better word than "settling" in my hook idea, but I am not sure what it is. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:18, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Homesteaded gave me an idea. How about DYK ... that the land that became Quail Hollow State Park was owned by only two families between the building of its first house in 1820 and its sale to Ohio as a park in 1975? I reread the article - DYK fact checkers are getting pickier lately and it says the first house. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:54, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
How about DYK .. that Independence Dam State Park in Defiance County, Ohio is named for a dam built for the Miami and Erie Canal and features some of the canal's ruins? Merry Christmas, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:28, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on another well done Buckeye state park DYK!! --Kralizec! (talk) 03:53, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I do not ... and in fact, I think we have only ever been to Defiance once. If the weather were not so nasty, I would offer to go take one this weekend. --Kralizec! (talk) 04:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- The only state parks in Ohio that I have good digital photos of are: Blue Rock, Hocking Hills, Marblehead Lighthouse, Mary Jane Thurston, Maumee Bay, and Van Buren, plus the Maumee state scenic river and the First Ladies National Historic Site. Depending on my work schedule and the weather (currently freezing rain with most counties under a Level 1 weather emergency), I would be more than willing to go photograph any of the parks in north-western Ohio (especially now that gasoline is the bargain price of $1.539/gallon!). --Kralizec! Candy Cane Lane
Would you mind looking at this and saying which pix you like best? My thought was a street view for the top, the sign, and the panorama at the bottom. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:49, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Candy Cane Lane is up with three pictures and the DYK nom is in with two alternate hooks to play it safe (they are looking to do Christmas themed DYKs on the 25th for some reason). Thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:13, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Y not?
You could try to expand Yellow Creek State Park five-fold. I also note that Yellow Creek Lake in that article is a red-link. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Ohio park counties
Ohio DOT does not seem to have maps online like PennDOT. There is this locator map from the state parks here. Also checking GNIS always gives the county or counties, so Mary Jane Thurston State Park is in Wood County, see this Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:28, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- Of course, the park map shows that it is in both Wood and Henry Counties. Lucas County is shown too, but the park seems to be just in those two counties. I like your hook idea, will think about it. More soon - thanks for the DYK congrats. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:13, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- I like your idea, but have a few tweaks - perhaps DYK ... that the original 14 acres (5.7 ha) of Mary Jane Thurston State Park in the U.S. state of Ohio were donated by its namesake schoolteacher? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:43, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Happy New Year and ideas
Happy New Year! I was wondering if you know wheter or not Newberry was a defunct borough in Lycoming County? I also thought that the 10 year Census data for 1890 gives municipalities data (formed from) and might be a good way to check on defunct / former twps. Like this from the Armstrong Twp question, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:07, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- 1790 census (still part of Northumberland County then) did not report by twps. Here is a link to all the population reports. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:18, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Jackson Lake State Park
I like your hook, would just tweak it a bit: ... that Jackson Lake State Park in Ohio is now the location of a thriving second growth forest, but was once home to the iron, coal and salt industries? I also checked and the stream is Black Fork, see the USGS topo map here and the GNIS entry here. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:44, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Delaware State Park and Bridge No. 3
Great hook - I would just add "the U.S. state", so DYK ...that Delaware State Park is not in the U.S. state of Delaware but rather in Ohio?
I have been really busy - my hope is to get Bridge No. 3 to peer review in the next week, then FAC the week after that. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
- I never saw the bridge while it stood (at least that I am aware of). Only know it from pictures - speaking of which you wouldn't happen to have any color shots of it? (Assume not, but wouldn't hurt to ask). I have an image of it to add to the article on expansion (will add a Description and construction section at the end) which is from the NRHP file - it is B&W and shows it in summer with a PennDOT employee standing on it. I think I can justify its fair use as it shows it undamaged, with a human figure for scale comparison, and in summer (none of the other free photos do this). There was a photo of it in the Sun Gazette after the '96 flood, but it was after the damage was done and I have only seen it in B&W microfilm - imagine it was color at the time. I should have some time tomorrow or day after to finish it for PR. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:20, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Teedyuscung
No problem. Although I wonder if the image is in the public domain (there's a pretty good chance that it was first published before 1923). --D.B.talk•contribs 00:27, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- I also wondered if it was older than 1923, but the website is very vague on the image source (at least as far as I could see). There has to be a DYK in there somewhere. I will think about it, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:35, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- I checked my "Inidan Village and Place Names in Pennsylvania" and he is not in the index. He is listed twice in "Indian Paths in Pennsylvania" but both are pretty tangential: 1) he was on the Forbidden Path going west to the Allegheny River in 1760 with Christian Frederick Post, who was stopped from traveling on the forbidden path as he was not a native. 2) Some colonists and their guides took the Lehigh Path to Wyoming (Wilkes-Barre) and ran into him going to Bethlehem. Was going to do more bridge work this evening and got sucked into copyvio images at Akron, Ohio instead. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:51, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
(outdent) It is OK, but somehow not sad enough - how about something like DYK ... that Teedyuscung, known as the "King of the Delawares", lost his land to colonial Pennsylvania in the fraudulent Walking Purchase and lost his life to arson? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Looks good - unfortunately the image can't be on the Main Page as it is fair use. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
(outdent) The 1949 version does not have the image of Teedyuscung in it. However, the book seems like a good source on Teedyuscung. IMO, a book free from the library is always better than buying, but if there are other reasons, besides its use in wikipedia, for owning the book (ie personal interest), it's worthwhile to own it. --D.B.talk•contribs 16:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Did you use worldcat.org? Other libraries that have the book are in Greensboro and Columbia, SC. --D.B.talk•contribs 21:15, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Beaver Creek State Park
I would add to the article that Little Beaver Creek is a National Scenic River within the park - see this (and it is mentioned in the official park website). I think that and the 1837 mill would be good in a DYK, maybe DYK ... that Beaver Creek State Park in Ohio is home to both Little Beaver Creek, a National Scenic River, and a restored 1837 mill? Cherry Springs or bust!
I finally got the bridge done so that I could start its peer review. Will work on Cherry Springs next. Sorry it took so long and thanks for your patience. Need to try and get there and get some more photos too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:40, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- I am so glad everyone is OK, still how terrible. Please take care of yourself and any car-related business first - the peer review is very low priority in the grand scheme of things. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:36, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds like a royal pain, just very glad no one was hurt. Thanks in advance for any review comments - this article proved much harder to finish than I thought, but I like how it turned out. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:29, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'll do my best - thanks for the advice. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:47, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the peer review - I will work through it and Finetooth's comments next. The Plunketts Creek article has more on the twp and I could dig back into my sources for more. I know that Big Bear Creek (which also has its mouth in Barbours) is important and has a very old hunting and fishing club on it - there's another creek that could be a GA if not FA. Looking good, thanks. I assumed it would follow the model of the other Pennsylvania state park FAs - History, Geology, Ecology, and Recreation, with Astronomy and Woodsmen Festival as the first two items under recreation. Hope you can see the game while at work, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:06, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
- I guess the alternative would be to put Astronomy right after History (like the Pine Creek Gorge is for Leonard Harrison and Colton Point). Enjoy the game, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:40, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Peer review question
Thanks for your helpful comments at the bridge's peer review - I fixed or replied to all but one - not sure about the Col. Plunkett paragraph split. If you could take a look atthe peer review and reply when you get a chance, I would appreciate it. Thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:44, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Kinzua Bridge PR
If you happen to get a chance, could you peer review Kinzua Bridge? I'm asking Ruhrfisch too, so you really don't need to. But if you have time, its been improved greatly since it made GA 6 months ago. Thanks, --D.B.talk•contribs 21:50, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Fair use image question at FAC
Thanks again for your edits and support at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3. A question on the fair use image has arisen and I am asking for your input to try and reach consensus. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:32, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- No problem - Finetooth wrote PennDOT and got permission to use the image after all. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:01, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- Things look good so far, though it is still early in the FAC. I just wish I had seen the bridge when it was around - I looked for stones from it when I took the pictures of the modern bridge No. 3, but did not see anything obvious. Having a doorstop / rock from it would also be cool. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Knowing it was torn down in March 1996, I actually looked at every page of every Sun-Gazette (on microfilm) from that month, hoping they would have a story on it, but no such luck. My guess is they took the rocks away for the most part - there would be quite a pile of them left if they did not. I also hope they used a few rocks from the old bridge in the footers for the new one. The groundhog saw his shadow in Pennsylvania - 6 more weeks to go. Maybe a few more delays for you! Buck Creek State Park
Hmmm. How about something like DYK ... that Buck Creek State Park in Ohio contains a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam and reservoir, an early 19th-century homestead on the National Register of Historic Places, and patches of original prairie? The USACE photos are US Government work (free). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:23, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- You are very welcome - I found an aerial view of the dam and lake on the USACE website and uploaded it to Commons, added to the article, and to the DYK nom. Good night, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:24, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- I don't have a great picture of a hollow, although I know of three that are sort of images of hollows:
-
Coal Mine Hollow in Cove Mountain
-
Mouth of Coal Mine Hollow in background
-
Kline Hollow Waterfall (Larrys Creek tributary)
- What do you think? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:27, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- I can try and take a better picture of Coal Mine Hollow next time I am on Plunketts Creek. There is a Beartrap Hollow in South White Deer Ridge (with an unnamed tributary of White Deer Hole Creek in it), but I am not sure how "photographable" it is. Rock, Hollow, etc.
Found the rock again - I have carried it since the day I took this picture and this was the first I lost it. I don't think you (or I) jinxed it. Coal Mine Hollow is the valley in the background (behind the game farm). The game farm is in the Plunketts Creek valley. I will see if I can get a Jacks Hollow photo from the road out of Duboistown if you want. They are talking about replacing the Arch Street Bridge - there was an article about it in the Sun-Gazette.
