Chairman's strategy comment was that some of the best editors get "burnt out". This is one list of them, with moving epitaphs: Wikipedia:Missing_Wikipedians
All relationships ultimately end whether through a breakup or death. Knowing this, humans continue to establish relationships and endure the inevitable highs and lows. By refusing to participate in a relationship, thus avoiding the joys and sorrow, those people will miss an important secret to life: Not feeling anything at all may be worse than feeling bad.[1]

Proposal - be nice
[edit]contrib to: [2] Preventing burn-out of the best
- I am really sad to see that some of the best editors "burn out". - Thoughts on coping and avoiding burn-out. - Accept that the newbies will be v. young, under 22, and may well reach admin status through hard work. - Repelling the bad content has to be done by someone, and if they like doing it, they should have support for that. - In 25 years of coping in large corporates (90,000 employees plus) I have a KYE process - "Know Your Enemy" - Applying this to Wikipedia I would say - as advice to editors -- If someone has given you one single bad vibe, just don't engage in conversation... their replies will just bring you down - - The trolls seem to feed off the immediate responses they receive from winding people up, so don't feed that, rise above it. If someone has given you one single bad vibe, then do not give them the satisfaction of ANY response at all. Just walk away. If you have been antagonised, and don't want to walk away, then console yourself with the fact that excommunication is the most severe punishment which can be bestowed.
ENCOURAGE KINDNESS - NEW box, like the "minor-edit" tick box - In terms of how to ENCOURAGE kindness - some sort of edit count seems to motivate wikipedians, rather than being so proud of "most number of deletes", try to introduce "most number of KIND words to newbies". How to get the counter to work automatically would take a major change, e.g., next to the "minor edit" button. You nominate yourself that you are saving a supportive message to someone, or a positive edit to an article, increasing knowledge (not simply upping your edit count adding NO-THOUGHT-REQUIRED tags which make the defamed article unreadable). Abandon Hope
[edit]Strategy discussion - kindness conclusion [3] One of the reasons why I left as a contributor is that I prefer to work in an enviroment where my contributions are reviewed by my peers rather than "anybody". The truth (such as it is) is out there. But in many articles in WP it does not seem to be there. Dispelling myths is one thing, repressing those who know something? I would agree with the original author of this piece. WP is not about sharing but regression to the mean/lowest common denominator (whatever that is). Good luck WP. It is still a good idea. But whether it will succeeed? Only time will tell. 83.160.198.125 22:05, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Xiong, Great analysis. I love the smell of jaded cynicism in the morning. Your philosophical views remind me of the parable of heaven and hell - we have the opportunity to use the technology (long spoons) to help nourish each other, but the problem, as Rabbi Haim astutely points out, lies in how we treat each other.
I quite like Wikipedia and don't expect it to be anywhere near perfect. Kaicarver 10:53, 16 May 2011
Yes, it does take time, decades/centuries. I saw a great comment from A_C_Grayling on development of knowledge gathering - "At times sceptical challenge has been seen as a serious threat to the project of attaining knowledge."[2] He was talking about progress in the middle-ages. It appears Wikipedia finds itself maturing through its own dark ages. Just a few centuries for you to wait. A lot of the user talk pages I have visited have a finality to them with a shared common experience of their work deleted over time.
Hence, a suggestion - "Be nice" campaign to get more focus. "Re-educate trolls" campaign to get teeth.

[edit]from Dating
“ | Very attractive translates as big-headed ... Average build means a bit paunchy ... 5ft 10 is actually 5ft 7 and a half ... The picture is always taken from the best, most flattering angle ... Black and white photos mean I am pretentious or I've something to hide ... Anyone who writes in text speak or says I heart instead of I like should be avoided ... Ditto for people whose interests include feet.[3] | ” |
The deception got worse. When he met his date who he had befriended online who he dubbed Facebook Guy for the first time, he wrote:
“ | Facebook guy arrived on time. Facially, he looked the same as his picture. And his arms were as "worked out" as he promised. But he was lacking in the leg department. Quite literally. Facebook Guy had failed to mention that he had no legs.[4] | ” |

[edit]I am interested in contributing to the projects listed on my user page, but only after girding my loins and steeling myself to take on teenage Wikipedians, they have much more spare time than I do when arguing their toss. Geoffjw1978 T L C 13:54, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Education
[edit]Some Thoughts Concerning Education#Pedagogical theory
In his Essay John Locke posits an "empty" mind—a tabula rasa—that is "filled" by experience. In describing the mind in these terms, Locke was drawing on Plato's Theatetus, which suggests that the mind is like a "wax tablet".[5] Although Locke argued strenuously for the tabula rasa theory of mind, he nevertheless did believe in innate talents and interests.[6] For example, he advises parents to watch their children carefully in order to discover their "aptitudes," and to nurture their children's own interests rather than force them to participate in activities which they dislike[7]—"he, therefore, that is about children should well study their natures and aptitudes and see, by often trials, what turn they easily take and what becomes them, observe what their native stock is, how it may be improved, and what it is fit for."[8]
