[1]When Region 1553-Colorado Springs, the AYSO equivalent of a league, debuted in 2008, it was an experiment. Could a city-funded park and recreation department integrate with AYSO, a centrally administrated non-profit organization based on an all-volunteer structure? The innovative model that developed from this experiment was groundbreaking both for Colorado Springs and AYSO.
[2]Free coach, referee, and administrator training have been among the most valuable benefits for AYSO park and recreation department affiliates. AYSO coaches referees and administrators also each have their own free weekly e-letter that continues after the course is over to inform, inspire and offer continuing education There are two parts to all AYSO volunteer training, One is a short online or in-person course that covers safety and appropriate behavior with children as well as first aid and other on-field issues. This course is named Safe Haven and is required for every AYSO volunteer. The volunteer receives a certificate for completion of the course and the certification is included in their AYSO registration record. Agreeing to a background check is also required for each volunteer. AYSO volunteer background checks are done on a national basis and there is no extra charge for this service.
