The Republic of Moldova(Republica Moldova ) is a republic with a popularly elected president, a parliament, the Parliament, elected in free multi-party elections and a government responsible to the parliament. Transnistria seceded as an unrecognized state from Moldova.

1792: After the end of the Russo-Turkish war, Aleksandros Mourousis becomes ruler of Moldavia. Moldavia east of the Dnestr is conquered and annexed by Russia. Russians settle in that part of Moldavia.
1812: After a Russian victory, the Ottoman Empire cedes in the Treaty of Bucharest part of Moldavia (Bessarabia) to Russia.
1813/1846: Russia forces the Nogais living in the region to leave an relocates the Gagauz people, from what is today eastern Bulgaria to the region, mainly in the settlements vacated by the Nogais.
1991: The parliament of Moldova declares the independence from the Soviet Union. Moldova is a founding member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

1991: The same year the elected parliament of Gagauzia secedes unilaterally and unrecognized from Moldova.
1994: A new constitution stipulates that Moldova has a parliament elected in free multi-party elections. The president is popularly elected. The government is responsible to the parliament. Gagauzia reintegrates into Moldova.
The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic(Приднестровская Молдавская Республика / Република Молдовеняскэ Нистрянэ / Придністровська Молдавська Республіка) is a limited recognized republic, de jure considered part of Moldova, with a popularly elected president, a parliament, the Supreme Council, elected in multi-party elections and a government responsible to the parliament.
1921: The Ukrainian forces are defeated in the Second Winter Campaign by the soviet army, marking the end of the republic. Soviet-Ukraine, a Soviet puppet state, takes over the country.
1940: The Soviet Union invades Romania and annexes Bessarabia and Bukovina. It merges Moldova with parts of the Moldovan ASSR into the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic as a constituent state.
1944: Romania quits the alliance with Nazi Germany and declares war on Nazi Germany. Bessarabia is conquered by and reintegrated into the Soviet Union.
1990: The parliament of the Moldovan SSR is elected in elections where non-communist can participate as independents.
