The Republic of Armenia (Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն) is a republic with a popularly elected executive president, a parliament, the National Assembly, elected in free multiparty elections and a government responsible to the parliament.
Urartu
  • c 860 BC: Armenian tribes establish in present-day Armenia, Artsakh and surroundings the unified kingdom of Urartu. One of the first kings is Sarduri I.
  • 786 BC: Under king Argishti Urartu reaches the highest point of its military might.
  • 760s BC: Colchis destroys the state of Diauehi and shares it with Urartu.
Median Empire
  • c 590 BC: Urartu is conquered by Media.
Persian Empire
  • c 550 BC: The region is conquered by Achaemenid Persia, that replaces it by the Satrapy of Armenia.

  • 428: Eastern Armenia is annexed to Sassanian Persia.
Arab Caliphate
  • 654: Armenia emerges as the Emirate of Armenia, an autonomous principality within the Arab Caliphate, ruled by the Ummayads, reuniting Armenian lands previously taken by the Roman Empire as well.
  • 750: The Ummayads are overthrown by the Abbasids.
Kingdom of Armenia
  • 884: Ashot separates Armenia from the Caliphate and becomes king of Armenia.
  • 1000: Out of renmants of the disappeared Kingdom of Armenia the Kingdom of Artsakh is created.
Roman Empire
  • 1045: Armenia is annexed to the Roman Empire[1].
Seljuk Empire
  • 1071: Armenia is conquered by the Seljuk Empire.
  • 1198-1375: An Armenian kingdom, the Cilician Armenia, is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is conquered by Egypt.
Principality of Armenia
  • 1201: During the collapse of the Seljuk Empire, a semi-independent principality in Northern and Eastern Armenia, rendered as Zakarid Armenia is established as a fief of Georgia. At the same times other Armenian entities are formed. Armenia is ruled by the Zakarids-Mkhargrzeli dynasty.
  • 1236-1238: Georgia, with Armenia is subjugated by the Mongol Empire under Chormaqan.

  • 1370s: Armenia is conquered by Timur, ruler of the Timurid Empire known as Gurkani.

  • 1467s: Kara Koyunlu is defeated by the Ak Koyunlu.
Persian Empire
  • 1501: Armenia becomes divided in Western Armenia, conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and Eastern Armenia, conquered by Safavid Persia in 1501. Both empires fight each other, but this division between the Ottoman Empire and Persia is confirmed mid-16th century.
  • 1736: Persia establishes the Erivan Khanate.
Russian Empire
  • 1813: Russia wins the war with Persia and in the Treaty of Gulistan, Persia is forced to irrevocably to cede a part of Northern Armenia to Russia. Western Armenia remains under Ottoman rule.

Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic
  • 1918 : Transcaucasia secedes from Russia, including parts of (Eastern) Armenia. The Transcaucasian members of the Russian constituent assembly form the parliament of Transcaucasia.
Democratic Republic of Armenia
Armenian Socialist Soviet Republic
  • 1920: The Ottoman invasion of Armenia as well as the disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan leads to a Soviet invasion and take over of Armenia. The Southwestern Caucasus is conquered by the Ottoman Empire. It ends the war with Azerbaijan. The Democratic Republic is defeated by the communists. Armenia becomes a communist republic, a Soviet puppet state.

  • 1921: When communists take power in Armenia, an uprising takes place and is defeated.
Republic of Mountainous Armenia
  • 1921: When communists take power in Armenia, Mountainous Armenia is formed on territory of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Mountainous Armenia is governed by a provisional government.
  • 1921: The Treaty of Kars leads to a final divison of Armenia between the Soviets and Turkey. Mountainous Armenia is reincorporated into Soviet-Armenia and Soviet-Azerbaijan the same year.
Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic
  • 1922: After communist seize power in these countries, The Armenian SSR joins Georgia and Azerbaijan in Transcaucasia, a client state of Russia.
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
  • 1922: Russia forms together with Belarus, Transcaucasia and Ukraine the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, shortly the Soviet Union, of which these states become constituent states. The Armenian SSR is a constituent state through Transcaucasia.
  • 1936: Transcaucasia is dissolved and the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic becomes a separate constituent republic.
  • 1990: In Armenia the communist dictatorship is overthrown.
