As Cambyses prepared to lead an attack on the Egyptian Empire, he was fearful of a rebellion being led in Persia by his younger brother, Smerdis, the only remaining heir to the Persian throne. In order to prevent any further trouble while he was in Egypt, Cambyses had his younger brother sentenced to death. [1]
