Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian) was the self-declared inheritor of Julius Caesar's position. But, this role was not acknowledged at first. After the death of the consuls Aulus Hirtius and Gaius Vibius Pansa Caetronianus in the war against Mark Antony, Octavian was chosen as the new consul with Quintus Pedius. Octavian decided for a truce with Antony. In the meanwhile, war was raging in the east. Gaius Cassius Longinus, governor of Syria defeated Publius Cornelius Dolabella in Asia. Together with the governor of Macedonia, Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger, they were in charge of the east and planned to march on Rome. Cassius and Brutus were conspirators against Julius Caesar, while Antony and his ally Marcus Aemilius Lepidus wanted to avenge the murder on Caesar just like Octavian. They decided to cooperate together as the Second Triumvirate. The proconsul of Gallia Comata (Northern Gaul, including the Rhine delta), Lucius Munatius Plancus remained neutral, and later sided with the Triumvirate.
