State license plate IFD

The question is whether the thing you photographed constitutes a "creative work" or is its design one of utility or function. Dolls, toys, CD covers, etc, are all primarilly creative in nature. On the other hand, unless you have one of those cell phones with flowers on the cover, the purpose of your cell phone design is one of utility - they are trying to make a cell phone that performs a function, rather than a work of art. See Commons:Commons:Derivative works#Isn't every product copyrighted by someone? What about cars? Or kitchen chairs? My computer case?. In the case of a license plate, if there is artwork on the plate, it is a copyrightable work. Only the copyright owner can authorize a derivative work and so we cannot create a free version of a license plate (at least not one with artwork). If the use of the license plate substantially contributes to the article, we can use it under a claim of fair use, but in the case of the article I went through, it was just a gallery and that isn't a fair use. --BigDT 12:13, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Movie posters, CD covers, and book covers are all creative and all should be tagged with an appropriate non-free image tag, like {{albumcover}}. They are actually in a further special case that is outside the scope of your question, but important to understand. When you scan, photocopy, or photograph a 2-D object, your act of copying is NOT transformative and no additional copyright is created. That's why we can use CD covers from amazon.com without amazon's permission - they don't own the copyright to them, even if they personally scanned the image. The difference between CD covers and license plates is that we use CD covers in the context of a larger article as a method of identifying the CD that the article is about. That is considered a fair use of the image. The same is true for movie posters, DVD covers, and the like. It's the same reason that amazon.com has a photo of the CD cover - it shows you what CD you are going to buy. If we were writing an article about the license plate itself, it would be find to include a photo of it. As an example, there have been court cases about pro-life license plates. If someone were writing an article about the court case or the plate itself, it would be fine to include a copy of it. Further, in a discussion of novelty plates, it's fine to show photos of such plates. What isn't fine is the List of U.S. state license plates article where all of the plates are merely used in a gallery. That is not a "fair use" of a copyrighted work because we aren't adding anything to the work. Does that help? --BigDT 14:19, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

While the tag expired without being removed, I did not delete the article because it was previously created by the same editor and deleted by prod, and both times the article was prod'ed, the author was not notified with {{PRODwarning}}. Edits removed, reasons unclear

Hi there,

You recently removed two of my small edits made to the external links sections of carousel and lighthouse. Kindly share your reasons? I feel the information is relevant, valuable and not already present on wikipedia, particularly the information about and pictures of the Dentzel carousel in Glen Echo Trolley Park, the information about the trolley park itself, and the pictures of the lighthouses at South Haven, Michigan. I'd appreciate knowing how you would modify these edits to suit style for inclusion, or else why you feel they are wholly unworthy of inclusion.

FYI, it's not useful to anyone for oldbies to "rubber stamp" newbies' talk pages and histories with 'idiot badges' that are too general to specifically address what was done wrong. I'm eager for your specific enlightenment on how to improve my tiny contributions and avoid this in the future. Small notes, instead of glaring boilerplate, can do wonders. Thanks.

Bagramyan article

Hi, I got your message but I did not vandalize the Bagramyan article. It was the cover article today so I went to read up and learn about him. Then I saw some weird words. I simply removed the words "likes pie" from the biography because it didn't make sense. I read further down and realized from inserts referring to "spaghetti monster" that the article had been edited to include these silly words, so I gave up and moved on. I'm not experienced enough with Wiki vandalism to be extensively "fixing" articles so I appreciate that you did so. Ivy Bands list

{{Ivy League Marching Bands}} is now on all 8 bands' pages...didn't bother including the university's own links in them, since the band-names seemed self-explanatory. There are scramble-bands outside the Ivy League too, so if someone cares about this distinction, a similar separate template could be created for scramblers in all leagues (see also Category:Scramble bands). I'm the anonymous user, The World Bank and World Bank Group are different, the WB consists of the IBRD and the IDA, the WBG consists of those two (the World Bank) as well as the Interational Finance Corporation; the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. If they were the same, they wouldn't have two different websites and two different names. There seems to have been a series of misunderstandings, and the WBG article is most unclear on drawing definitions between the two. Thanks for your cooperation and criticisms. Whiskey in the Jar, if you really believe there is a useful distinction between World Bank and World Bank Group it might be more useful if you were to separate the World Bank Group in to the two articles — it looks like World Bank has been copied from elsewhere, i.e. is a copyright violation. The concensus for two years has been that one page is sufficient, I think you need to prove why two articles are needed rather than pointing a finger at those who are restoring the concensus (to date). Homosexuality in women's sports article and AfD'ing

Hi, The orphan tag is not appropriate as speaks to the wikilinks which are internal to WP. I've added over a dozen myself so I know that it's no longer an orphan. I wasn't accusing you of abusing the AfD process you were stating it. The AfD process is for hopeless articles which can't be improved through regular editing, many do abused the AfD process so please avoid doing it. Many articles do need improving but doing so by use of AfDing doesn't bring the inspired and enlightening editing that makes truly great WP articles, IMO. No one seems to disagree with you that the article is poorly written and needs work but it's not a hopeless or unencyclopedic article just one that needs work and can be greatly improved with regular editing. Bushman's book is more than twice as long as Brodie's and his citations cover more than a hundred pages. Brodie's summary footnotes probably don't occupy a tenth of that space. Bushman is a distinguished historian; Brodie's degrees were in literature. Most important are the number of new sources that have become available over the past sixty years. replied on John Foxe's page: The number of citations in Bushman's book doesn't speak to quality or depth of research, it speaks to the number of citations. The length of book means that he was more verbose, not necessarily more comprehensive. THe statement in the No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith article demands proof from a third-party source (a book review or third- party historian) specifically claiming that the Bushman book is better than Brodie's, or I could rewrite the language in the No Man Knows article to not make unproven claims. ITimes vs. IJournal

The Ithaca Times does indeed have a larger circulation than the Ithaca Journal within the city, a fact the editors of both papers will readily admit. Ithaca Times: 22,000 weekly in the city. Ithaca Journal: daily circulation 17,111 and a Saturday circulation of 21,830 combined city and surrounding towns.

Additionally, within the city itself, the Journal is oft derided as "The Urinal." Even those who do respect it acknowledge that it is mediocre at best due to poor resources and correspondingly inadequate staffing.

The Times, on the other hand, enjoys a solid reputation and is widely read.

No vandalism here. In fact, I am a journalist who has worked for the Journal's corporate parent and once explored a job at the Journal. That's why I am aware of these facts. Both papers admit them.
