Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera created by Reg Watson. It was first broadcast on 18 March 1985. The following is a list of characters that first appear in the show in 1989, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by the show's executive producer Don Battye. The fifth season of Neighbours began airing from 16 January 1989. First to join the cast were Linda Hartley and Miranda Fryer as Kerry Bishop and Sky, daughter and granddaughter of Harold Bishop. Lenita Vangellis arrived as Poppy Skouros in March. Robin Harrison and Ashley Paske made their debuts in May as Bob Landers and Matt Williams respectively. Jade Amenta began appearing as Melissa Jarrett in August. Amber Kilpatrick began playing Tiffany McLachlan in October and Brad Willis made his debut at the end of the month. Maree Ackehurst made her first appearance as Lee Maloney in November and two weeks later, Amelia Frid joined the cast as Brad's sister, Cody Willis.

Kerry Bishop

Kerry Bishop, played by Linda Hartley-Clark, made her first appearance on 1 February 1989. Kerry is Harold Bishop's (Ian Smith) daughter, who arrives in Erinsborough after backpacking around the world with her infant daughter Sky Bishop (Miranda Fryer). While her brother David Bishop (Kevin Harrington) takes after their father, Kerry is "cut from different cloth" and rebels against her father's conservatism. Producers had introduced the character as a possible wife for Des Clarke (Paul Keane), however, when she began to interact more with Joe Mangel (Mark Little), they became popular with viewers and producers later had them marry. Hartley-Clark quit Neighbours after twenty months and the decision was taken to kill Kerry off, making her the second member of the regular cast to die in Neighbours. For her portrayal of Kerry, Hartley-Clark won the 1989 Penguin Award for Best Actress in a Drama Serial. Robin Oliver from The Sydney Morning Herald branded Kerry "the greenie martyr". A columnist for the Sunderland Echo named her death as one of Neighbours' memorable moments.

Sky Bishop

Sky Mangel (also Bishop), made her first appearance on 1 February 1989. The character was originally played by Miranda Fryer, who was cast after being spotted in a supermarket. Fryer was 18 months old when she began filming and was the first child actor to be contracted to the serial. Sky was Kerry Bishop's (Linda Hartley-Clark) daughter and Joe Mangel's (Mark Little) step-daughter. Fryer departed the show in 1991. When the character was reintroduced in August 2003, producers recast the role to Stephanie McIntosh. McIntosh decided to leave school to take the part. Sky was a teenager upon her return to Erinsborough, where she is reunited with her grandfather Harold Bishop (Ian Smith). She described Sky as being "a lot of fun, intrigued about life and very positive." She also believed viewers would be able to relate to Sky, who had endured the tragedy of her mother's death and bullying at school. For her portrayal of Sky, McIntosh received a nomination for the Logie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent in 2004.

Poppy Skouros, played by Lenita Vangellis, made her first appearance on 9 March 1989. Poppy was introduced as a potential love interest for Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan), whose wife Charlene Robinson (Kylie Minogue) had left the serial the previous year. Coral O'Connor of the Daily Mirror reported that Poppy lives in Erinsborough, is around 18 years old, and a belly dancer. She teams up with Scott to write an article for the local newspaper. Vangellis told O'Connor that Poppy and Scott spend so much time together that Poppy falls in love with him. Their closeness does not go unnoticed by the residents of Ramsay Street, who like Poppy, but their loyalties are with Scott and Charlene. Vangellis disliked her character's actions, stating "Poppy seems like a real wimp at times. The way she declares her love to Scott is just something I wouldn't do. She isn't really a femme fatale. She is an unfortunate little girl who makes the wrong moves. Of all the attractive men there are, she picks one who's married. I guess it can happen to the best of us." Fans were not happy about Poppy's seduction of Scott, and Vangellis revealed that she was once chased onto a tram by some school girls who branded her a homewrecker. She added that she enjoyed working with Donovan, calling him "a very unselfish actor", who helped her with the scenes. Poppy ends up leaving Erinsborough, and Vangellis made her last appearance on 17 May 1989.

Poppy is the daughter of Theo Skouros (Vincent Vaccarri), a gardening client of Henry Ramsay (Craig McLachlan). Poppy attends her sister Kathina's wedding and meets Henry, who is hosting the reception at Number 22 Ramsay Street along with his girlfriend Bronwyn Davies (Rachel Friend). When Henry and Poppy reconnect, Bronwyn becomes jealous as she is busy with her night school courses. However, Bronwyn and Poppy become friends when Poppy teaches her to belly dance. Henry suggests Poppy talks to his brother-in-law Scott Robinson for his immigration article for the Erinsborough News. Poppy and Scott get on well and Poppy is noticeably attracted to Scott, who is married to Henry's sister Charlene who is living in Brisbane. Scott and Poppy go to find an interviewee for an article, but are stranded in the bush for the night when Poppy's car breaks down. Theo is annoyed and orders Scott to stay away from Poppy. Poppy later reveals that a marriage has been arranged between herself and Stavros Papadopoulos (George Zogopoulos), who she does not love. Scott and Stavros fight at the Waterhole after Stavros warns him off. When Poppy declares her feelings to Scott, he is shocked and rejects her. Poppy agrees to marry Stavros, to the shock of Scott who tries to warn her off but is threatened with the police by Theo. After Scott and Stavros have a second fight and Poppy sides with Scott, Stavros tells Scott's parents-in-law Madge Bishop (Anne Charleston) and Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) that Scott and Poppy are having an affair. When Madge threatens to tell Charlene, Scott denies having an affair and agrees not to see Poppy again. Poppy argues with Theo and decides to leave for Greece.

Robert "Bob" Landers, played by Robin Harrison made his first appearance on 5 May 1989. Harrison was originally cast as Jim Robinson in 1984 and had already filmed some scenes when his contract negotiations broke down. The role was then recast to Alan Dale in January 1985 and the scenes featuring Harrison were re-shot. When the character returned to the series in 1991, Bruce Kilpatrick took over the role. Kilpatrick had guested previous guested in the serial in 1986 as Gavin McKinley. Bob is the father of established characters Todd (Kristian Schmid) and Katie Landers (Sally Jensen) and ex-husband of Annette Landers (Tania Uren). In their 1989 book,The Neighbours Factfile by Neil Wallis and Dave Hogan, Bob is described as a "bullying father who believes his kids should pay for his drinking habit".

In 1988, Bob and Annette's marriage breaks down after a series of arguments and the children go to live with their aunt Beverly Marshall (Lisa Armytage; Shaunna O'Grady) and her new husband Jim Robinson. The following year, Bob takes a job at a Post Office in Erinsborough and has a chance meeting with Katie, who along with Toby Mangel (Finn Greentree-Keane), is on the trail of Helen Daniels' (Anne Haddy) blackmailer who is demanding $20,000. Katie is overjoyed to see Bob, who is evasive and swears her to secrecy. Katie tells Todd and he confronts Bob. Todd quickly works out that Bob is behind the blackmail. Bob tries to justify his actions by saying he needed the money to make a new start and agrees disappear as long as Todd keeps quiet until he is gone. Todd reluctantly agrees, however, Bob is arrested. Helen then agrees to pay Bob's bail for the sake of the children, with Jim and Beverly contributing a third each. Jim agrees to get Bob some legal help but Bob panics at the prospect of being behind bars and decides to flee. Todd begs him not to leave and Bob suggests he come with him to Cairns. When Katie learns about Bob and Todd's plan to leave, she is upset and tells Jim and Beverly. Beverly arrives at the bus station in time to stop Todd leaving. After Todd decides to stay, Bob tells him it is his loss and gets on the bus.

Two years later, Bob returns to Erinsborough and asks Todd to meet him. Bob is still on the run and tells Todd he is planning to get the money to pay back Helen. Todd notices Bob has injured his arm and hides him at the recently vacated Number 32, which Helen has purchased. Helen discovers Bob hiding and he swears her to secrecy and she reluctantly agrees to let him spend Christmas with her and Todd. Bob gives Helen Jim's share of the bail money and she urges him to turn himself in. Bob's arm begins hurting him following a spider bite and Todd is able to get Pam Willis (Sue Jones) to look at it at the hospital. It turns out Bob was shot in a bank robbery and when Todd discovers the truth, he orders him to leave. Bob eventually agrees to turn himself in but the police arrive on Ramsay Street and arrest Bob who tries to flee. Bob blames Todd at first but apologises for his treatment of Todd and Annette. Several months later, Todd visits Bob to tell him that his girlfriend Phoebe Bright (Simone Robertson) is expecting their baby. Bob warns him not to make the same mistake he did by marrying young. Two weeks later, Todd is killed by an oncoming van while trying to stop Phoebe from having an abortion. Bob is permitted to attend the funeral under armed police guard. Once the service is concluded, Bob steals one of the officers' guns and holds Helen hostage. They take Jim's car and speed off. Helen tries to reason with Bob but he will not listen. Bob then dumps Helen on the roadside and speeds off.

A few weeks later, Bob breaks into Number 30 and menaces Phoebe at gunpoint, demanding money to help him get away as Todd told him she had recently inherited her late father, Arthur's (Barry Hill) business and money. They discuss Todd for a while. When Bob falls asleep, Phoebe tries to use the phone to call for help but he stops her. Dorothy Burke (Maggie Dence) arrives home and Bob demands money out of her. Dorothy refuses and Bob begins smashing her artifacts until she agrees. Dorothy goes to the bank while Bob holds Phoebe as insurance. When Dorothy is delayed in getting back from the bank, Bob gets agitated. Phoebe escapes and alerts Brad Willis (Scott Michaelson) that Bob is armed and at her place. Brad runs into the house to save Pam, who has gone to check on Phoebe and is shot in the process by Bob, who then flees.

Matt Williams

Matthew "Matt" Robinson (also Williams), played by Ashley Paske, made his first on-screen appearance on 22 May 1989 and departed the show on 19 March 1991. Paske's casting was announced On 8 May 1989, by the serial's producer Mark Callan, who told Jackie Cockburn of Evening Times that the former Richmond Hill actor Ashley Paske had been cast in the role of Matt. Callan said that they were introducing new characters to test the relationships with their established ones. When Paske was given the role, he relocated from his home in Wollongong to Melbourne for filming. In Neighbours The Official Annual 1991, John McCready and Nicola Furlong said Paske was following in Jessica Muschamp and Anne Scott-Pendlebury's footsteps in a "rise to the top" in making his mark on Neighbours. The BBC said Matt's most notable moment was his "motorbike accident with Gemma." A reporter from The Sydney Morning Herald opined that Paske was just a replacement for Jason Donovan who played Scott Robinson. Rachel Browne of The Sun-Herald said that as Matt, Paske won a legion of fans and became a teen magazine cover boy.

Melissa Jarrett

Melissa Jarrett, played by Jade Amenta, made her first appearance on 8 August 1989. Melissa departed on 9 April 1991. Amenta won the role of Melissa in a competition and she joined the cast of Neighbours at the age of fourteen. Amenta took acting lessons and her coach entered her for the part. The role of Melissa was initially to last for two months and she was introduced as the girlfriend of Todd Landers (Kristian Schmid). Amenta was still at school while starring in the show and had to balance her work with filming. The character was part of the show's teenage character group which included herself, Cody Willis (Amelia Frid), Todd Landers (Kristian Schmid) and Josh Anderson (Jeremy Angerson). In 1991, Barbara Toner of The Sydney Morning Herald said Melissa had the "Best entrance on the year's first episode of Neighbours."

Tiffany "Lochy" McLachlan, played by Amber Kilpatrick, made her first appearance on 23 October 1989. A writer for BBC Online called Tiffany "an absolute little terror." They described her as always cooking up mischief and trying to obtain money or vandalise other people's property. They said "this little girl was certainly not made of sugar and spice and all things nice. More like paint-stripper and bleach." They also said that the character's most "audacious moment" was when she graffitied Paul Robinson's (Stefan Dennis) car. Paul was quite protective of his car and was outraged when he saw what Tiffany had done. The writer wondered what Tiffany was up to today and believed that she was either "Behind bars" or running a bank. The character's profile on the BBC said Tiffany's most notable moment was "Painting Paul's car." A columnist for the Aberdeen Press and Journal branded Lochy and her friend Toby Mangel (Finn Greentree-Keane) "a pair of little devils."

Tiffany is the daughter of Russell and Petra McLachlan (Berndardette Wheatley) and sister to Ryan (Richard Norton). As her family were quite affluent, Tiffany appeared to be spoilt and pampered. When Kerry Bishop (Linda Hartley-Clark) begins running a childminding service, Petra places Tiffany in her care. Kerry's stepson, Toby Mangel is initially reluctant to become friends with Tiffany, as his friend, Katie Landers (Sally Jensen), had just left for Adelaide. Toby warms to Tiffany after her tomboy persona comes out. She tells Toby to call her Lochy and they become good friends. One day, Lochy and Toby find an empty house and become convinced that it is haunted. However, they discover that a runaway teenager, Lee Maloney (Maree Ackhurst), is living there. They tell Matt Robinson (Ashley Paske) about Lee and he takes her home with him.

After a Magpie dive bombs her, Lochy takes a dislike to the birds and begins throwing stones at their nest. Toby and Helen Daniels (Anne Haddy) warn her that she will make the birds angry, but Lochy does not listen. Lochy then decides to climb the tree to get to the nest, but when Kerry calls her, she loses her balance and falls from the tree, breaking her arm. Lochy clashes with her classmate Natasha Kovac (Courtney Compagnino), who makes Lochy's life miserable. Lochy tells her aunt, Dorothy Burke (Maggie Dence) that Kerry is mistreating her. Dorothy threatens to report Kerry to the Department of Childcare and Lochy admits that she made her story up. Kerry gives up her child care service, but agrees to continue looking after Lochy.

Lochy's life is placed in danger when she decides to wag school to go to the beach with Ryan and his girlfriend, Tania Walsh (Angela Nicholls). The couple hitch a lift with Kerry's husband Joe Mangel (Mark Little) and Lochy sneaks onto the back of Joe's ute. Ryan and Tania are angry when they find her. Lochy asks Tania to call her school and pretend she is sick. Ryan then tells Lochy to leave them alone, so he and Tania can be alone. Lochy gets into difficulty in the water, having gone out alone and Ryan pulls her to safety. Lochy is unconscious, but some lifeguards give her CPR and she comes around. Lochy tells everyone to blame her for the accident instead of Ryan, but Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) sacks Ryan from the Coffee Shop. Lochy protests outside the shop, outraging Harold. The Erinsborough News turn up and Harold agrees to re-instate Ryan.

Lochy starts having nightmares after witnessing Dorothy knocking down Bouncer the dog. She then contracts the mumps and has to be quarantined. Lochy overhears Dorothy telling Joe that her prized African statue carries a curse if it is ever broken. Lochy breaks the chain around the statue and she runs off. Joe finds the broken chain and believes the curse is real. Lochy tells Dorothy what has happened and Dorothy tells her that she had made the story up. Lochy comes to believe the curse is real though, when a sword falls on Joe. He then begs Dorothy to exorcise the curse and Dorothy has him run outside in his underwear. Lochy admits she broke the chain and asks whether she should go out in her underwear too. Dorothy then admits it was all a joke.

When Toby's mother, Noeline Mangel (Lindy McConchie) dies, Lochy is very affected by the news. She goes to get some flowers for her mother, but she falls into a fountain at the park when some of the bricks come loose as she picks roses. Lochy tries to offer Toby (now Ben Guerens) some support, but he refuses to talk to anyone. Toby pushes Lochy away one day and manages to hurt her. Kerry and Joe force Toby to apologise and he and Lochy became friends again. When their parents go away to Papua New Guinea, Lochy and Ryan move in with Dorothy. Lochy later joins her parents in Port Moresby, when they decide to settle there permanently.

Brad Willis

Brad Willis made his first appearance on 31 October 1989. The character was originally played by Benjamin Mitchell. The character returned in August 1991 with Scott Michaelson taking over the role. He was introduced along with Rachel Blakely, who plays Brad's sister, Gaby Willis. Their introductions occurred during a period of roller coaster ratings for the serial. June Walton of Woman stated: "Brad Willis, who has the invaluable support of his parents, Doug and Pam, is in his early 20s, but acts like an irresponsible teenager. He can't hold down a job and can't help chasing pretty girls." Brad was originally going to be a professional basketball player, but writers changed the storyline after Michaelson told them he was a surfer. Brad becomes involved in a love triangle between Beth Brennan (Natalie Imbruglia) and Lauren Carpenter (Sarah Vandenbergh), which culminates in Beth jilting Brad at the alter when she realises he has been dating Lauren too. For his portrayal of Brad, Michaelson was nominated for Most Popular Actor at the 1993 Logie Awards. The character was reintroduced in May 2013 and the role recast to Kip Gamblin. Executive producer Richard Jasek said he had initially thought about approaching Michaelson to reprise the role, but then learned that he was not acting anymore. Brad was reintroduced with his new wife Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) and their teenage children, Josh (Harley Bonner) and Imogen Willis (Ariel Kaplan).

Lee Maloney, played by Maree Ackehurst, made her first appearance on 8 November 1989 and departed on 13 March 1990. Writers created a relationship storyline between Lee and Matt Robinson (Ashley Paske). In November 1989, Paske told Darren Devlyn from TV Week that he was "anxiously awaiting" Matt's first relationship story with Lee. He added that viewers would have to wait until the episodes aired, but was "excited" about the story's direction. The couple soon become serious about their relationship, after Lee leaves home due to her difficult relationship with her parents. She and Matt were shown living together in a flat, but Lee ultimately decides that she is too young to settle down and they break up.

Lee meets Kerry Bishop (Linda Hartley-Clark) and her children Sky (Miranda Fryer) and Toby Mangel (Finn Greentree-Keane) in the park. Kerry asks if Lee is new in town and Lee invents a story about moving around a lot due to her father's job and having a high-powered job of her own. As Lee continues to talk with Kerry, her story begins to unravel. Kerry, suspicious, invites Lee to join her and the children on a picnic. When Kerry's neighbour Matt Robinson collects Tiffany McLachlan (Amber Kilpatrick), she tells him about a local house where she and Toby have seen a ghost. Matt initially laughs this off, but realises something is up when he and Lochy spot a figure, who turns out to be Lee. She says that she lives in the house, but Matt is sceptical and she admits that it belongs to her uncle Rod (Kirk Alexander) and aunt Jean (Carole Brown). She also tells Matt that she is hiding out from her feuding parents. Matt and Lochy agree not to tell anyone.

Matt returns the following day and brings Lee some food. Toby, his father Joe (Mark Little) and Henry Ramsay (Craig McLachlan) arrive at the house after Toby believes the ghost is there. Matt and Lee hide and do not emerge until Rod and Jean arrive and threaten to call the police when they see Toby, Joe and Henry. Rod calls Lee's parents, which upsets her and she refuses to go home. Matt convinces his mother Hilary (Anne Scott-Pendlebury) to let Lee stay for a while. Lee's parents, Patrick and Evelyn (Cheryl Ballantyne) try to convince her to return home, but she refuses to, knowing of their separation. Evelyn tries one last time to get Lee to relocate to Perth with her, but she refuses.

Matt tries to help Lee find a job, but they have little success. Lee accuses him of trying to control her life, which leaves Matt hurt. He explains that he is only helping her because he cares about her and then he kisses her. Lee is shocked and things between the pair are tense, but during a sit-in in the Year 12 common room, Lee joins the students and tells Matt she wants to be more than friends. Before Christmas, Lee secures a job working at the local coffee shop, but the good feeling soon ends when Matt decides to visit his adoptive parents in Adelaide. Matt and Lee's secret romance is revealed, but Hilary tells them she already knew and allows Lee to continue living at Number 30 Ramsay Street. With most of their friends away for the holidays, Lee befriends neighbour Nick Page (Mark Stevens). When Matt returns in the New Year, he is jealous to learn that Nick and Lee have been spending time together and accuses Lee of cheating on him, which upsets her. Matt apologises and Lee forgives him.

Lee bickers with Gloria Lewis (Beverly Phillips) when Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) leaves her in charge of the coffee shop and insults her casserole. Harold threatens to sack both of them unless they change their behaviour. They agree to put their differences behind them. When Hilary decides to return to Adelaide and Number 30 is sold, Matt and Lee have to find a new place. They find a run-down house, which they try to tidy the best they can, but they eventually leave when a neighbour makes unwanted advances towards Lee. They return to Number 30 as squatters and Matt suggests taking things to the next level, but Lee reacts badly. The couple are caught in the house one night by Jim Robinson (Alan Dale), who offers Matt a place to stay and Des Clarke (Paul Keane) agrees to let Lee stay next door. Matt is disappointed by Lee's enthusiasm at their separation. Lee feels increasingly smothered and takes advice from Kerry who had a similar experience. On the day of Nick's leaving party, Lee is spotted leaving by Ryan McLachlan (Richard Norton) who tries to talk her into returning, but Lee refuses. She hands him a note to give to Matt. Matt reads the letter, in which Lee thanks him for helping her, but says she had to leave as she was feeling pressured.

Cody Willis

Cody Willis, played by Amelia Frid, made her first appearance on 24 November 1989. Frid was cast after a successful audition and she called it a "right time, right place thing". Cody is "studious" and a "high achiever", making her parents very proud of her. Cody dates Todd Landers (Kristian Schmid), and Frid told Dawn Bebe of BIG! that Cody is "flirty and does her best to chase boys – especially Todd". This behaviour caused Frid embarrassment because she was completely unlike Cody. Frid departed the show in 1991 during a revamp of Neighbours, which occurred after a decline in ratings. The character was reintroduced in 1993 with Peta Brady in the role. Brady was a full-time student at the University of Sydney when she was cast. Brady understood that some viewers might find the changes to the character "odd", but she hoped they would eventually accept her. A Sunday World columnist observed that "as well as sporting a more glamorous image, Cody is also a much more fun-loving young one." The character was given two love interests and Brady said that she was not like Cody at all when it came to men, saying "Cody always seemed to need to have a man in tow." After four years in the role, Brady quit Neighbours and producers took the decision to kill the character off.

Toby is reluctant to go with them as Ted dislikes him and is regularly violent with him. During dinner, Toby accidentally squirts Joe with ketchup and Ted hits him. Joe threatens Ted and orders him and Noeline to leave. Several weeks later, when Noeline snatches Toby from Joe's place, Ted is unimpressed and tells her he doesn't want Toby. When Noeline refuses to get rid of Toby, he goes to hit Noeline but is stopped by Joe and is tackled to the floor. Joe threatens Ted into leaving which he does. It is later revealed Ted and Noeline's marriage was dissolved as Ted was still legally married to his previous wife.
23–24 January	Carolyn Woodhouse	Laura Christie	A classmate of Lucy Robinson at her boarding school. When an allegation of cheating is raised, Lucy is accused but the real culprit is Carolyn who Lucy is covering for. Carolyn admits to stealing Lucy's assignment as somebody stole hers in order to maintain her marks to remain in the school as she is on a scholarship and her mother cannot afford the fees. Carolyn begs Lucy to cover for her which she does, until Todd Landers visits Carolyn and convinces her to own up, which she does.
23-25 January	Mrs Granger	Mary Ward	Mark Granger's mother. Mark brings her to meet his fiancée Jane Harris and her uncle Joe Mangel. When the Grangers invite Joe and Jane to their place, Mrs Granger takes Jane aside and tells her she feels she is unsuitable for Mark. When Mark finds out, he is incensed with rage and sends his mother back to America.
16 February–29 March	Madeline Price	Natalie Bate	Scott Robinson's colleague at the Erinsborough News. Madeline asks for Scott's help in investigating her late father, Andrew's murder case for a book she is writing. Scott agrees to help Madeline and invites her to dinner with his family. When Scott's grandmother, Helen Daniels, who remembered the media coverage of the case, notes the evidence against Andrew was strong, Madeline takes offence to this. Scott's father, Jim offers a sympathetic ear. Madeline becomes more and more obsessed with clearing her father's name and implicates Eric Conrad, the ex-boyfriend of Lorraine Jackson, the murder victim. She and Scott arrange an interview with Eric, who warns, Madeline against printing lies. Madeline becomes convinced that Eric will come after her and is too frightened to stay at the hotel so Jim agrees to let her stay with the family. That night, Madeline pretends she heard a noise and thinks Eric after her in order to get Jim's attention. It becomes clear that Madeline is attracted to Jim and engineers a situation where her towel "slips" and lies that Eric attacked her. Scott confronts Madeline on her journalistic methods which involve hounding Roger Delo, the arresting officer and a friend of Roger's, Bill MacIntyre and decides to quit. She turns on Scott and tells him she will ruin his name in the industry. Scott backs down but after talking to two more witnesses in the murder case, he stands up to Madeline who slaps him. Madeline seeks comfort in Jim and tells him she loves him but Jim's wife Beverly walks in the door. Beverly demands an explanation and Jim tells her nothing happened, which she believes but demands Madeline leave. Madeline tries to garner more sympathy by bringing up Eric, but Jim tells she has to go, which she grudgingly does. Madeline tells Jim he will regret this.
23–28 February	Eric Conrad	Jim Ewing	Eric is interviewed by Scott Robinson and Madeline Price. He threatens Madeline against printing lies about him in her book with a lawsuit. Madeline accuses him of killing his ex-girlfriend, Lorraine Jackson and framing her father, Andrew. Eric professes his innocence and tells them that he had left Lorraine long before the case and was bitter that she had gotten involved with Roger. Madeline threatens to expose Eric but he warns her to watch her step. Eric visits Scott and his father, Jim to assert his innocence after Madeline claims he is stalking her and making threatening phone calls and angrily states he has been trying to rebuild his life since Lorraine's murder and has a family that doesn't need to hear about this. Madeline later accuses Eric of attacking her but he has a strong alibi.
23 February–7 April	Jenny Owens	Danielle Carter	Jenny meets Mike Young and they go for a ride on his motorcycle. Jenny falls off and is left paralysed. Mike begins having nightmares about the accident and goes to visit Jenny at a convalescence home. Mike blames himself but Jenny tells him not to as she wanted to get on the bike. Jenny's brother, Angus punches Mike blaming him for Jenny being paralysed. Mike then asks Jenny to move with him and Des Clarke at Number 28 and adjust the house to accommodate Jenny. Jenny becomes frustrates when she struggles with her disability. Angus visits her and he and Mike clash over Jenny's care. When Des suggests that Jenny move into a rehabilitation center with more adequate care than Mike can provide, Jenny is upset. Mike tells her that she doesn't have to leave and after a fun day out at Luna Park, Mike proposes and Jenny accepts. Jane Harris and Bronwyn Davies, who previously dated Mike try to talk the couple out of marrying, citing Mike's guilt as a reason not to. After Jenny falls over in her chair, she begins to realise that a marriage with Mike would never work and after a game of wheelchair basketball, Jenny agrees to move into a rehab centre.
27 February–14 March	Angus Owens	Stephen Hall	Jenny Owens' brother. Angus comes to Ramsay Street looking for Mike Young and punches him in the nose, blaming him for causing his sister's paralysis. Several weeks later, Angus returns to visit Jenny and apologises to Mike and they all go out to a club. However, they return early when Jenny feels useless due to her condition. Angus tells Mike he is pushing Jenny too hard and that she needs proper care. Mike tells him that he will be able to look after Jenny, even if it means the rest of his life.
8 March–16 May	Theo Skouros	Vincent Vaccari	Theo comes to Lassiter's to pay for his daughter's wedding reception which is to be held but is annoyed to learn from Jane Harris that there has been a double-booking. Henry Ramsay, who works for Theo as a gardener, offers to hold the reception at Number 22 Ramsay Street where he is staying and Theo is grateful. Theo later warns Scott Robinson off his younger daughter, Poppy when she begins spending time with him.
8 March	Bill MacIntyre	Jack Perry	Jack is a friend of Madeline Price's late father, Andrew who served with him in the Vietnam War.
9 March–19 April	Sophia Skouros	Helen Zervopoulos	The wife of Theo Skouros and the mother of Poppy Skouros. She appears at her elder daughter, Kathina's wedding reception, hosted at Number 22. When Henry Ramsay offers her a snack, communication is difficult due to Sophia's limited English. The following month, Sophia arranges for a bust of Plato to be mounted by Henry and Joe Mangel in the garden. When the statue falls, breaking the nose, Henry and Joe panic and construct a fake one. When Sophia arrives home, she is happy with the statue but the new nose immediately falls off. However, Poppy tells Joe and Henry that Sophia thinks that statue looks better without the nose.
10 March	Roger Delo	Charles Dance	The police sergeant who worked on Madeline Price's father, Andrew's murder case. Madeline interviews him for her book. Roger tells her that Andrew killed Lorraine Jackson and lied under the oath. Madeline hysterically accuses Roger of lying on Oath but he asserts that Andrew confessed to him.
15–16 March	Constable Stewart	Matthew Barker	Stewart walks into the Coffee shop and assumes a masked Henry Ramsay is trying to rob Des Clarke at gunpoint and arrests Henry. After Des explains that they were staging the robbery in order to have Joe Mangel tackle Henry in order to repay Des for saving his life, Stewart releases Henry.
29 March–5 April	Betty Bristow	Abigail	An old school friend of Harold and Madge Bishop from Brisbane. Madge becomes jealous when Harold is hospitable to Betty and engages in flirting with her. Madge then goes for an expensive treatment in order to compete with Betty's looks after she makes comments about her being a barmaid and wearing the uniform. The Makeover is ruined after Madge runs home in the rain. Madge then angrily tells Betty that she wishes she never came to visit. However, Madge apologises the next day for her behaviour and Betty admits that she is also jealous of Madge, who has a strong marriage with Harold and two children. Before Betty returns to Brisbane, leaves Madge a card for her plastic surgeon.
24 April–10 May	Stavros Papadopoulos	George Zogopoulos	Poppy Skouros' arranged fiancé. He warns Scott Robinson to stay away from Poppy and Scott punches him. Scott tries to talk Poppy out of marrying Stavros during an engagement drink and Stavros lashes out and floors Scott. The engagement then collapses Stavros then tells Harold and Madge Bishop, Scott's in-laws that Scott and Poppy are having an affair.
3 May 1989, 15 November 1990	Sgt Bill Mooney	Peter Black	A local police sergeant and a friend of Jim Robinson. When Jim's mother-in-law, Helen Daniels receives a threatening note, Mooney investigates. The following year, Dorothy Burke indirectly implicates Adam Willis in a conversation with Mooney after her nephew Ryan McLachlan takes sedatives Adam has in his possession.
15–26 May	Ian	Nathan Croft	A classmate of Nick Page and Sharon Davies. Ian is coerced by Sharon into asking Harold Bishop to rehire her at the coffee shop. Ian, unsure, does so only to be told by Harold that Sharon will not be rehired, much to Sharon's annoyance. A week later, Sharon asks Ian and another classmate, Linda, to make life difficult for her sister, Bronwyn in revenge for taking her job at the coffee shop. Linda and Ian purposely make orders of items not on the menu and begin lying about existing orders being wrong, which frustrates Bronwyn and lands her in trouble with Harold.
16–26 May	Linda	Julie O'Hara	A classmate of Nick Page and Sharon Davies. She and several students arrive at Number 30 when Sharon sets up a cafe in the backyard of Number 30 in order to compete with the coffee shop. A week later, Sharon asks Linda and another classmate, Ian, to make life difficult for her sister, Bronwyn in revenge for taking her job at the coffee shop. 18 May–9 June	Kevin Harvey	Simon Westaway	Kevin answers Gail Robinson's advert for a secretary much to her surprise. Kevin then makes a pass at Gail and kisses her. Gail is horrified and rebuffs Kevin's advances. Gail's husband, Paul, however is oblivious and is impressed with Kevin's initiative and promotes him. Kevin clashes with Jane Harris when she returns from overseas to reclaim her position. He then suggests Paul bribe the council in order to facilitate business and land development deals. Jane gives Paul and ultimatum; Either Kevin goes or she does. Paul gives Kevin a cheque for $10,000 to pay the council in order to speed up the rezoning of some land. Gail urges Paul to stop the cheque but it is too late, it has been cashed and Kevin has disappeared with the money, effectively conning Paul and Gail.
25 May–9 June	Dean Gardner	Andrew Larkins	Gloria Lewis' son. Following his graduation from Law school and joining a prestigious firm, He attends a party but does not want Gloria and her husband Rob to attend as he feels they would be out of their depth. Gloria is hurt. Dean further upsets Gloria when he asks her to keep her distance as one of the partners at the firm, Mr Smithers will be hosting a lunch at the pub and is worried about how he will react to Gloria being a barmaid. At the lunch, Gloria and Smithers recognise each other as they both went to school together. Dean then apologises to Gloria for his treatment of her.
16–28 June	Alison Ryder	Thea McLeod	Alison meets Todd Landers on the bus when he returns to Erinsborough from visiting his mother, Annette in Adelaide. Todd asks Jim Robinson and Beverly Marshall if Alison can stay with them as she does not get along with her aunt she is visiting. They agree to let her stay with them and Todd is delighted. Alison seems nice in general but it becomes clear she is lazy and selfish and generally takes advantage of Todd. When Helen Daniels notices that $30 to pay the paper bill is missing, Alison is the chief suspect as she was the only one in the house. Helen, Jim and Beverly are unsure how to tell Todd. When the money is mentioned, Todd defends Alison. After Helen chastises Alison about her laziness, She steals a brooch out of Helen's handbag. Todd decides to go back home to Adelaide with Alison but discovers Helen's brooch in Alison's bag and tells Helen. A furious Alison yells at Todd for telling on her and Jim drives her to the bus station.
26 June	Mrs Udagawa	Joyce Yuen	Toshiro Udagawa's wife. They attend dinner at Number 28 with Des Clarke and Kerry Bishop. When Joe Mangel bursts in to attack Des for allegedly making moves on Kerry, and knocks himself out, The Udagawas are shocked and leave immediately.
13 July–1 August	Jonathan Whiting	Terry Bader	A patient of Beverly Marshall. He constantly showers Beverly with gifts, including flowers and a sheepdog and constantly comes up with reasons to visit her. Beverley's husband Jim Robinson warns him off but Jonathan continues undeterred. Beverly herself tells him not to call again. However, Jonathan returns and complains about being in pain. Beverly makes him wait but Jonathan is telling the truth and collapses at the surgery. Jonathan is rushed to hospital. Beverly visits Jonathan as he is getting discharged to tell him to find another GP and he surprisingly agrees. Beverly notices that Victoria, the nurse looking after Jonathan, has a bracelet which she tells her Jonathan gave her and Beverly is relieved that Jonathan has transferred his affections to someone else.
25–26 July	Les Murdock	Paul Glen	A local panel beater. After Jim Robinson recognizes his son Paul's stolen car parked outside Les' garage in a video filmed by Katie Landers and Toby Mangel, he pays Les a visit. Jim talks to Les who feigns ignorance about the car but Jim recognises Paul's license plate and is about to call the police when Les hits him with a wrench. Nick Page and Todd Landers arrive and Nick chases after Les while Todd looks after Jim. Les gets away due to traffic blocking Nick but he is arrested at his house.
25 July–23 August	Robyn Taylor	Gerda Nicolson	Robyn meets Harold Bishop when he trains for the Erinsborough Walkathon. They begin talking and begin a close friendship and start training together. They grow closer and attend a concert together. Harold's wife Madge is shocked to learn that Robyn is a woman. Harold admits to Robyn he is attracted but loves Madge and nothing could ever happen between them. However, Harold visits Robyn and they resume training. Madge is horrified when she learn Robyn feels more for Harold than friendship, Madge is angry and tells Robyn to stay away from Harold. Robyn then leaves Erinsborough Heartbroken.
1 August–8 September 1989 23–24 January 1991	Mary Crombie	Alethea McGrath	Mary is found wandering on the roadside by Joe Mangel and his son Toby. They give Mary a lift to a local nursing home only to find she is not one of their patients and as Mary cannot remember where she lives, Joe is stuck with her. To add to Joe's woes, Mary thinks he is her son. Mary offers to put a bet on for Joe but picks the wrong horse. When the horse Mary bet on wins, Joe is suspicious and thinks Mary is conning him. Mary reveals her son Darryl has been neglecting her and has been medicating her to the point where she has become forgetful. Mary buys some chickens which Joe is against at first but relents. Darryl arrives to collect Mary and takes her home. Several weeks later, Joe receives a call from Mary and he and Kerry Bishop go to her place to find Mary bed bound and heavily medicated with Darryl's tablets. Joe and Kerry try to get Mary out of the house but Darryl comes home and threatens to call the police. Joe overpowers Darryl and he and Kerry take Mary with them. Darryl arrives to speak to Mary, Joe is hesitant and they have a discussion. After a long talk, Darryl explains that he left his wife after several arguments and asks Mary for forgiveness. Darryl and Mary then leave. In 1991, Joe and Toby hide out and Mary's place in the country when Joe takes his adoptive daughter Sky Mangel from her biological father, Eric Jensen. Mary is devastated when Joe tells her Kerry was killed. Mary suggests Joe and the kids could live near her but after some words from Harold Bishop, who tracks them down, Joe relents and agrees to return Sky to Eric. In 2005, The BBC website held a poll to find the "Top 20 Most Obscure Neighbours characters", and Mary was featured in the list at Number 18. A fan described her as "some dotty old lady who was obsessed with her chooks".
9 August–11 November 1989, 18 September 1991, 20 January 1993	Reverend Craig Richards	Anthony Fletcher	Reverend Sampson's successor at St Stephen's Church. Harold Bishop confides in Richards about his attraction to Robyn Taylor but does not mention their names. Richards tells Harold that his "friend" should stop seeing the person he is attracted to. When Harold and his wife Madge plan a romantic evening, they forget they have invited Richards to come over, resulting in an awkward night. Richards strikes up a friendship with Melanie Pearson and later declares her cake the winner in a competition. He later dates Melanie for a short while and convinces Cass Boyle to join the choir. When Harold is swept off some rocks in 1991, Richards conducts a memorial service. He is last seen when he conducts the wedding of Stephen Gottlieb and Phoebe Bright in the back garden of Number 30.
18 August–8 September	Darryl Crombie	Merfyn Owen	Mary Crombie's son. Darryl comes to Ramsay Street looking for his mother, who has wandered off and takes her home. Several weeks later, Joe Mangel and Kerry Bishop find Mary alone and heavily sedated. They confront Darryl and take Mary with them. Darryl comes to see Mary and tells her he has left his wife and promises to take care of her and they leave.
23 August 1989–26 September 1991	Jan Daly	Christine Lucas	Mike Young brings Jan back to his place and introduces her to his friends. They spend the night together and Jan leaves the next morning. Jan goes to a club as Paul Robinson's date along with Christina Alessi and Eddie Buckingham. Jan enjoys herself dancing with Paul much to Christina's irritation. When Christina makes bitchy comments towards Jan, Jan throws a drink in her face. Melanie Pearson invites Jan over to have dinner with Joe Mangel, whose wife Kerry Bishop died several months earlier. Joe and Jan get along well and they kiss but Joe pulls away. Jan later returns having fallen out with her boyfriend and she and Joe plan to go on a date but Jan cancels as she has reconciled with her boyfriend, who has proposed. Jan visits Joe, who tells her that he and Melanie are engaged to be married in matter of weeks and reveals that Melanie had a one-night stand with Paul the previous year, much to Joe's shock.
20–27 September	Gordon Davies	Tim Robertson	Bronwyn and Sharon Davies' father. He arrives to visit Bronwyn when he learns of her engagement to Henry Ramsay. Henry tries his best to impress Gordon but can seemingly do no right. Gordon tells Henry that he does not stand a chance of marrying Bronwyn while he is still around. Madge Bishop, Henry's mother admonishes Gordon for putting Henry down and Gordon agrees to leave but Bronwyn convinces him to stay and Gordon agrees but decides to stay in a hotel as opposed to Number 24. Henry tells Gordon that he will marry Bronwyn with or without his blessing. On the day of the wedding, Gordon makes one more effort to ensure that Bronwyn does not rush into the marriage by suggesting she and Henry wait. Bronwyn then considers her father's suggestion and breaks the news to Henry.
22 September 1989–5 July 1990	Sean Jarrett	Jamie Churchill	Melissa Jarrett's younger brother. He catches Melissa and Todd Landers kissing and threatens to tell their parents. Todd attacks Sean when he begins taunting the couple and is about to punch him when Hilary Robinson intervenes. Sean tags along on a trailbike ride with Todd, Melissa, Josh Anderson and Cody Willis and mocks the four of them when they decide to form a band and practice playing instruments. The following year, Sean, Melissa and their parents move to America.
2–12 October	Ben Jarrett	David Ravenswood	Melissa and Sean Jarrett's parents. Ben catches Todd Landers in Melissa's bedroom when he gives her a birthday present and threatens to call the police if Todd does not stay away from Melissa. However, a week later Ben arrives at Number 26 to talk to Helen Daniels about Todd and Melissa. Ben admits that he is protective of Melissa due to her epilepsy. When Todd, Melissa and their friends take part in a drinking session that leaves Melissa unconscious due to complications with her epilepsy, Rona bans Todd and Melissa from seeing each other. Todd's aunt, Beverly Marshall speaks to Rona, who admits she is struggling alone as Ben is overseas. Todd apologises for the incident and Cody Willis and Josh Anderson tell Rona that Todd was not entirely to blame and Rona agrees to lift the ban. In 1991, Ben gets a job in America and the Jarretts move there.

19 October	Petra McLachlan	Bernardette Wheatley	The mother of Ryan and Tiffany McLachlan. When Kerry Bishop answers her advert in the Erinsborough News for a childminder, Petra brings Lochy to meet her. In 1990, Petra and her husband Russell go overseas to Papua New Guinea and leave Ryan and Lochy to stay with their aunt Dorothy Burke. They later send for Lochy to join them in Port Moresby.
20 October 1989–12 January 1990	Debra Turner	Daisy Cameron	Debra is a patient of Beverly Marshall. She brings her newborn son to see Beverly at the surgery. Debra is visibly stressed with the baby's excessive crying and blames Beverly for suggesting she have the baby and admits she wants to give him up for adoption. When Beverly closes the surgery for the day, she and Clive Gibbons find Debra's baby abandoned with a note. Beverly takes the child home and names him Rhys after her father and makes plans to formally adopt him. However, Debra returns with Adam Delaney, Rhys' father and they demand $1,000 in exchange. Beverly writes the cheque but Debra and Adam begin blackmailing her until Beverly's husband, Jim calls the police. When Adam is arrested, Debra puts Rhys up for adoption and Beverly is left distraught when she has to hand Rhys over to the adoption authorities.

20 October–10 November	Ted Morrow	Erik Donnison	The station manager at Radio Erinsborough. Ted agrees to let Henry Ramsay try out some talkback radio on the station. He is impressed with Henry's way of connecting with his listeners.
1–2 November	Stan Cooper	George Trotman	A resident of Golden Years Retirement Village. Stan calls into Henry Ramsay's radio show and invites Henry and his guest Joe Mangel to come down to the home. After seeing how dull the home is, Joe and Henry plan to take the seniors on a day out. However, the Home's Supervisor Mrs Mason, tells them they cannot. Joe's wife, Kerry Bishop is undeterred and sneak Stan and the seniors out and take them to the beach. Stan is grateful at the end of the evening when they return home and thanks Joe, Henry and Kerry.
9–10 November	Rod Maloney	Kirk Alexander	Lee Maloney's uncle. When Toby Mangel brings his father Joe and Henry Ramsay to a house he believes is haunted, the three of them go inside only to encounter Rod and his wife Jean. Rod tells Joan to call the police but Lee and Matt Robinson appear. Lee reveals she has been staying at the house while Rod and Joan were overseas. When Rod goes to call his brother and sister-in-law Patrick and Evelyn, Lee refuses to return to her parents and moves in with Matt.
10 November	Jean Maloney	Carole Brown	Lee Maloney's aunt and Rod's wife. Jean talks her husband out of calling the police When Toby Mangel, his father Joe and Henry Ramsay arrive at their home and are mistaken for intruders. Lee reveals she has been staying at the house while Rod and Jean were overseas.
14 November–11 December	Cass Boyle	Carolyn Ferrie	A caller on Henry Ramsay's show on Radio Erinsborough. Cass talks about being lonely, insecure and not having many friends. When Henry makes a suggestion, Cass takes it the wrong way and hangs up saying she does not want to continue living. Henry is worried but Cass calls back and the conversation continues. At the end of the call, Henry reluctantly agrees to meet Cass for a date. Cass arrives at the Waterhole and Henry mentions he is engaged to Bronwyn Davies and introduces her to Melanie Pearson and Reverend Craig Richards and the four go to a Japanese restaurant where Cass demonstrates a good singing voice. Cass meets Bronwyn and they get along. Melanie plays matchmaker with Cass and Reverend Richards and it works as they have a number of things in common, and Richards asks Cass to join the choir and she agrees. Cass and Richards later go bowling and meet with Bronwyn, Harold Bishop and Gloria Lewis.
15–17 November	Lorna Edwards	Judith Graham	A judge of a gardening competition which several residents of Ramsay Street have entered. Lorna declares Joe Mangel the winner.
22 November	Patrick Maloney	Unknown	Lee Maloney's parents. They arrive at Number 30 in order to convince Lee to return home, which she refuses to do so due to their constant arguing. They leave but Evelyn returns the following day and she and Lee argue after Evelyn suggests Lee move to Perth with her, following her separation from Patrick but Lee flatly refuses. Evelyn then leaves alone.

12 December 1989–5 November 1990, 23 March 1993–14 February 1994	Wally Brown	Brad Lindsay	A local drunk and frequent customer to the Waterhole. Wally asks Madge Bishop for $20 to get a cab home but when she refuses, he tries to raid the till. However, Madge is quick to fend him off with some self-defence moves. Wally later appears when Gloria Lewis lets patrons bring in alcohol while she is in charge. Wally then insinuates Wayne Duncan was having an affair with student Annalise Hartman and further annoys Wayne when he suggests he killed Cactus, a local biker who had beaten Wayne up. In 2015, what seems to be a dead body is seen in a photograph of Paul Robinson and Sue Parker kissing. Paul confirms that the body in the photo is Wally, who has a reputation for being passed out in various parts of town and confirms Wally is still very much alive. This discovery leads to Sue's husband, Bill Warley punching Paul.
13 December 1989–16 January 1990	Adam Delaney	Joel Richardson	Rhys Turner's father. He and Rhys' mother Debra begin blackmailing Beverly Marshall for $1,000 in exchange for the adoption of their son. Beverly pays the money but Adam keeps on demanding more. Jim Robinson calls the police and Adam is arrested.
