This Decade has been a crazy and unforgettable one…It seems like every time you turned on your TV you would here about the Lakers and Patriots winning Championships and the Yankees just plain out winning and you would hear arguments about Steroids and Dog Fighting and about Farve Coming back. There are many crazy a spectacular thing that happened in 2000’s but here are the ones that stand out so lets take a look back and test you memory.

2001

What a way to go Out- Colorado Avalanche defeated New Jersey Devils 3-1 in Game 7. It was Hall of Famer Ray Bourque last year and finally won his NHL Stanley cup. He played 1,826 Regular season and playoff games combined without winning the cup. The NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman handed the Stanley cup to Capitan Joe Sakic instead of doing the traditional captain skate around the rink. Sakic handed it to Bourque and Ray Bourque skated around the rink with his team trailing behind. It was a great ending for a great player.


The Unforgettable Series - The Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees had a battle of the ages in the World series Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius two Yankee veterans each hit game-tying, two-run home runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a World Series game 4 and 5. The Yankees won both games in extra innings. The World series made it to game 7 with to baseball legends Curt Schilling and Roger Clemens. It was battle between both teams in eighth Alfonso Soriano solo blast gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Arizona then tied the score due to two hits and a error and a walked batter. Then Luis Gonzalez in the 9th inning with bases loaded hits a walk off single to win the world series.

Move over Big Mac Barry is in town!!!- Before the all-star break, Barry Bonds hit 39 homeruns. He was on the track to beat Mark Mcgwire record with 70 homeruns. Well after the all-star break Bonds didn't let up he hit #30, #50, #70, and on October 5, 2001 Bonds hit his 71homer rum at Pacific Bell Park on a tailing fastball from Chan Ho Park it went 442 feet and landed in right-center. Barry Bonds Also hit number 72 the same night off of Park

2002 Who Cares about Kickers???- The New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams in a stunning upset 20-17. The Patriots were a 14 point under dog in the game. Tom Brady led the patriots to a 14-3 halftime lead. After a field goal by Adam Vinatieiri gave New England a 14 point lead. Then Rams battled back to a 17-17 tie. Stirkeing back was Tom Brady and the Patriots who put together a 53-yard drive in the final 1:21. Then while clock was expiring Adam Vinatieiri kicked a game winning 48-yard field goal giving new England there first Super Bowl Championship. (They Went on to win to more in 2003 and 2004)

2004 Federer Express

Rodger Federer was nearly untouchable in 2004 he won three Grand Slam the Australian Open, The Wimbledon and the US Open. He also won the tennis Master Cup defeating Lleyton Hewitt . During 2004 he had a .925 match winning percentage and went undefeated 18-0 against other top 10 opponents. Federer Earned $6,357,547 in 2004 just short of the record.

Who believes in Curses- the Boston Red Sox ended their "curse of the Bambino" by winning the World Series for the first time in 86 years against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Boston Red Sox Swept the Cardinals in 4 games. But their hardest victory came in the American League Champion Series when they lost three straight games against the Yankees and came back beating the Yankees in four straight games advancing them to the World Series. Manny Ramirez was named MVP of the World Series,

The Bad and The Ugly- During the Course 0f 2004 there was many surprising incidents that happened. Well to start things off first lets just say I think Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson Will never perform another Super bowl halftime show together again. One of the most Shocking incidents involved Lakers Star Kobe Bryant had a sexual assault charge against him with a 19-year-old woman. The incident occurred when Bryant was having knee surgery in Colorado. Then Lets not forget the unforgettable brawl between the Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Piston fans during a game at Auburn Hills, Michigan that resulted in criminal charges. With less then a minute in the game a minor fight broke out. After a fight a soda was thrown from the stands and hit Ron Artest. Artest immediately climbed up in the stands and started a Brawl. The following day, the NBA announced that nine players would be suspended. Artest was suspened for the remainder of the Year. Also in 2004 Todd Bertuzzi Sucker punched Colorados Steve Moore sending him to the ice. Moore suffered a career ending neck injury.


2005 Steroids?? California-based laboratory BALCO uncovered a undetectable steroid that had been given to many of are famous Athletes such as star baseball player Barry Bonds, American sprinters Tim Montgomery and Marion Jones. Montgomery was banned for two years and his former 100-meter world record was striped from the books.(Marion Jones Medals were stripped in 2007) But Steroid changed baseball in the biggest ways. Some of Baseball biggest stars Jose Canseco ,Mark McGwire, Baltimore Orioles star Rafael Palmeiro , Sammy Sosa, Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and Chicago White Sox' Frank Thomas were all Accused. Barry Bonds took the biggest heat out of all the players and he may always be know as the guy who did steroids.

NO HOCKEY!!! On February 16, 2005 NHL 88th season was canceled. The cancelation was due to an unresolved lockout that began on September 16, 2004. This was the first North American professional sport to be canceled because of a labour dispute. This also made it the first time the Stanley Cup was not awarded since 1919. NHL came back for the following year 2005-2006 bringing In two young studs #1 overall pick Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin who was drafted #1 in 2004 but due to the lockout he was a rookie in 2005.

2006

BarHERO.. In 2006 Barbaro was a horse legend. Barbaro placed 1st at the Tropical Park Derby, Holy Bull Stakes, Florida Derby and at the Kentucky Derby all in 2006.On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a favorite to win but after he false-started he fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg. Barbaro lost any chance to win the triple Crown in 2006. The Injury ended his racing career. He underwent numerous surgeries but unfortunately died on January 29, 2007.

Floyd Landis won but lost- During the Tour De France Landis spectacularly came back and beat Oscar Pereiro passing him after the Stage 19 time trial, Landis won the 2006 Tour de France but did he. On July 27, 2006 the Phonak Cycling Team announced Floyd Landis had a urine test come back positive due to a high ratio of the hormone testosterone. The test’s came out positive and Landis was suspended from professional cycling and dismissed from his team. In 2007 International Cycling Union stripped Landis of his 2006 Tour de France title and Second place finisher Oscar Pereiro was declared the offical winner.

GOALLL!!!! Italy Defeats France in the world cup in pentaly kicks 5-3. Zinedine Zidane was tossed out of the game when he headbutted Marco Materazzi in the chest. Italy wins their fourth world Cup Title.

2007

Mike Sick- In August 2007 Star Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to dog fighting, killing, and ect. and was sent to prison for 23 months. According to the indictment, “dogs that didn't show enough fighting spirit, or that lost matches, were put to death by a variety of methods, including shooting, drowning, hanging and electrocution”. Vick participated in killing eight dogs. Vick did come back in the league and signed with the Philidelipha eagles in 2009. David vs. Goliath - Boise State Broncos vs. Oklahoma Sooners on New Year's Day Fiesta Bowl. Oklahoma was the favorite in the game. It was just like any other college bowl game until the fourth Quarter Oklahoma Sooners tied the game up 28-28 because of a touchdown pass and a two point conversion. The Sooners then got a interception and it seemed like the game was over. But Boise State drove down the field and time was ticking Jared Zabransky completed a 15 yard pass to Drisan James. James then lateraled it to Jerard Rabb for the 35 yard touchdown with 7 seconds left on the clock. In overtime Oklahoma’s running back Adrian Peterson ran in a 25 yard touchdown to give the Sooners the lead. Oklahoma decided to kick the extra point. Boise State then countered with a 6 yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Vinny Perretta to Derek Schouman. Boise state decides to go for the 2 point conversion to win the game. The Broncos call up a trick play called the Statue of Liberty Ian Johnson scores on a 3 yard run 43-42 Boise States wins in one of the greatest Sports games ever. After the Game Ian Johnson tops off the fairy tail ending by proposing to his girlfriend who is a Boise State Cheerleader.

2008

Olympic Gods-During the Bejing Oylimpics two incredible athletes Stood out Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps. Usain Bolt won 3 gold medals in the 100m, 200m 4x100m relay. He set world records in both 100 m and 200 m events with 100 m record time of 9.69 seconds and a 200m time of 19.30 seconds. Michael Phelps Won a record Eight gold medals. Phelps won the 400 m individual medley , Gold 4×100 m freestyle relay, 200 m freestyle, 200 m butterfly, 4×200 m freestyle relay, 200 m individual medley, 100 butterfly, 4×100 m medley relay Phelps set 7 world records and 1 oylmpic record.

The Great Turn Around- The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in game 6 131- 92 . After picking Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen up to team up with Paul Pierce the Celtics made one of the biggest turn arounds in sports history the Celtics finished there 2006-2007 season at a staggering 24-58 finish. In 2008 the Celtics had a amazing 66-16 finish. Paul Pierce who has stuck with the Celtics through their troubles won Finals MVP.
