Some archaeologists believe that the first sex toys date back to the Ice Age period of 40,000 to 10,000 BCE. Phallic Batons, which were found in Eurasia and Pakistan, measured into the size range of what is the modern day dildo. These objects were made of bone, ivory, limestone, and even teeth. Archaeologists who are in opposition of the phallic batons being used as a dildo believe that they were used simply for spear sharpening, hunting, or other ritual purposes. However, Hallie Lieberman, argues, “Even if these ur-dildos were not actually used for masturbation, they still proved that phalluses have been a part of human culture since the beginning of humanity.”[1] Other dildo- shaped objects have appeared in Ancient Egyptian art, which is believed to have been linked to the cult of the God Osiris.[1]Dildo- shaped objects were seen most commonly during Ancient Greece, which was a civilization that embraced and celebrated human sexuality. The phalluses created by the Greeks were made of leather, and then olive oil was used for lubrication. Most classicist are willing to admit that these objects were used for masturbation and not other activities. [1]
