The flag of Barbuda was created in the summer of 1997 by Hakim Akbar and Darlene Beazer.[2][3]
Design and symbolism
[edit]The Barbuda Council flag is red on a horizontal green background with a yellow disc in the center that takes up over 80% of the flag's height. Inside the disc is a typical island bird called a "Frigate bird" with a distinctive red mouth.[3] The color green symbolizes the earth and growth, the color red the fervor, strength, and love of country, the color yellow the hope symbolized by the rising sun, the color blue the sea/ocean; it also symbolizes the tranquility of the island, and the color black the black frigate bird flying into the sun, which symbolizes the tenacity and freedom of Barbudans.[2] At the Envisioning Barbuda 2030 workshop in New York City in 2018, the blue was added.[2] Since the blue stripe is so thin, many flags do not have it.[3]
