User:CROIX/Dependencies of Antigua and Barbuda
Dependencies are a type of administrative division in Antigua and Barbuda. Currently, there are two dependencies. Barbuda is an autonomous island that was annexed into Antigua in 1804.[1] Redonda is an uninhabited island that was annexed into the parish of Saint John in 1872.[2] The Barbuda Local Government Act, passed on December 23, 1976, established the island's local government system, which is administered by the Barbuda Council.[3] Redonda is within the jurisdiction of the Magistrate for District "A".[2]
Barbuda
[edit]On September 23, 1804, Antigua and Barbuda legally formalized their relationship.[1] It dealt with Barbuda as though it belonged to the Colony of Antigua.[1] The islands' connection was further regulated by the Barbuda Act, which was approved on April 30, 1904.[4] The limits of Codrington Village were also set down in this statute.[4] The Codrington Village was subject to different development laws than the rest of Barbuda as a result of this law.[4] The Governor-General is the Crown's agent for all lands on the island of Barbuda, and he or she is responsible for managing them in conformity with the Act.[4] All residents of the Island of Barbuda are tenants of the Crown, and they are not permitted to own or otherwise deal in any land located on the island unless specifically provided for in the following provisions of this Act and subject to any applicable by-laws passed by the Council. Allotting, distributing, and dividing all of the village's land among its residents is legal with the Cabinet's sanction and permission, provided that the certain requirements are met.[4]
