Graphic Arts Institute (GAI) is only one Government Printing & Graphic Design Institute in Bangladesh which is established in the capital city of Dhaka in 1967. [2] It provides us four years duration technical courses named Diploma in Engineering in printing. Mr Azam Khan, Governor of the East Pakistan and Dr Waqar Ahmed, Director General of the then Technical Education Directorate were the main initiators. Dr RK Mollah was appointed as its chief Instructor. He was sent to the South Dakota University of the USA for higher training on printing technology. Training was also given to other instructors of the institute at the Central Government Printing Press.
The institute started with 25 seats. But at present, this institute has over 500 Hundred students. This institute was started two shifts: Morning shift and Evening shift. Every year over 200 students are admitted in this institute. It has two Departments: Graphic design and Printing Technology. [3]
At present, the Graphic Arts Institute has become a complete printing institute, which is equipped with different types of printing devices like movable type, letter press, gallery type camera and also with modern technological devices like offset lithography, gravure printing, screen printing, modern process camera (horizontal and vertical) with auto plate processor, lithe film, panchromatic film etc. In order to cope with the other printing presses of the country as well as modern printing technology of the world, the computer graphic course has been incorporated with the new curriculum began from 1995-96 session. In the institute both the Apple Macintosh and IBM computers together with image setter, drum scanner, laser printer, inkjet printer etc are available.
It has technically experts’ teachers who are our confidence. It has 2 three story building, one academic building, one auditorium , big size workshop, photography lab, screen printing lab, science lab, indoor game room, common room, large size library, reading room, Graphic design lab etc. It has also own accommodation management in a silent zone. Since 1967, the institute approved a three years diploma (with six semesters) degree in printing technology usually offer by the Technical Education Board. However the course is rearranged from the current session (2001-2002) with four year diploma (with eight semesters). The institute is consisting 40 staff including 16 academic staff. At the moment it can absorb 200 students out of which 10% is preserved for the women and 5% for the tribal. From the 4th semester students will be divided into two groups: graphic Design and offset printing. The institute also has residential building for the principal, three staff quarters for the teachers, officers and employees, one mosque and a 250 seated residential hall for the students.
Departments and Subjects
[edit]The subjects covered in the institute include Adobe photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign Qark express, 3ds max, Autodesk Maya, Web design program. The target job sector for the students include graphic designer, desktop publisher, web designer, web developer, press manager, machine operator and colour master etc. The institute has 40 staffs include 16 academic staffs to render services to the students.
Facilities Available for the Students
[edit]The institute has a 250 seated hostel for the students. The institute has one auditorium, big size workshop, photography lab, screen printing lab, indoor game room, graphic design lab etc. Hence the students can develop their technical capability through more practical learning as well as theoretical learning.
Admission Procedure and Eligibility
[edit]The admission takes place according to the rules and regulations of the Board of Technical Education. The students must have GPA 3.00 in the SSC or other equivalent examinations to be able to apply for admission. The admission form has to be collected from the office or website of the institute. The students have to sit for an admission test for getting admitted in the institute. The students are admitted according to their result in the admission test.[4]
