Questions to answer

[edit]
  • Why are Sn(IV) and Pb(IV) alkyls and aryls common whereas their Sn(II) and Pb(II) equivalents are almost unknown? Opposite effect is seen for halides, oxides, etc. Inert pair effect any use? G&E 399-405.
  • Why are some metals magnetic and others not?
  • Why do electronegative elements always have lone pairs?
  • Is Gillespie's ionic model of BF3 widely accepted? If so, hypervalency becomes much less of a problem for classical bonding theories, since e.g. PF5 can be simply described as a resonance hybrid of various [PF4]+F species. This was Langmuir's view.
