Borders of Chile
The borders of Chile had their base in the borders of the Captaincy General of Chile, after the independence from the Spanish Empire in 1818. Later, new territories were incorporated and established by treaties. Chile borders with Peru to the north (168 km/139 miles), Bolivia to the northeast (942 km/585 miles) and Argentina to the east (6691 km/4157 miles), with a total lenght of 7801 km of terrestrial borders[1]
The largest proportion of the country, called Continental Chile, are located in the western side of the Southern Cone in South America, between Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Insular Chile consists of Juan Fernández Islands, Desventuradas Islands, Isla Salas y Gómez andEaster Island (both are located in Polynesia). Chile claims an antarctic territory between the 53°W to 90°W[2] and from the South Pole to 60°S. This claim is suspended by the Antarctic Treaty System, because the country is a signatory.[3]
