History

[edit]

Establishment

[edit]

The Community College of City University, predecessor to UOWCHK, was established in 2004 as the Government announced a gradual phasing out of funding for sub-degree programmes.[2]

Alliance with University of Wollongong

[edit]

On 21 November 2014, the University of Wollongong (UOW) and City University of Hong Kong announced their partnership.[3][4] The college was then renamed UOWCHK / CCCU and eventually in July 2020, the college was further renamed as UOW College Hong Kong.

CCCU successfully transitioned to UOWCHK after gaining approval as an independent accredited institute in 2019 under Hong Kong ordinance and officially separated from CityU in 2020 after a five year transition period beginning from 2015. CityU will continue to focus on academia and pursue excellence in professional education and translational research while UOWCHK will further grow as a degree granting University/College with international connection.[5]

UOWCHK receives full support of UOW with educational resources and commitment to develop and enhance student experience via opportunities for mobility and global exposure. UOW has launched top-up degrees in Hong Kong via UOWCHK.[6]

Past and current campuses

[edit]

As of July 2023, the main campus will be reallocated from their current Kowloon City Campus to their new campus in Tai Wai for the 2023-2024 school year onward.[7] The new campus sits on land secured from the Hong Kong government in 2016.

Tai Wai Campus (new main campus)

[edit]

The new UOWCHK Campus, to be officially opened on 15 September 2023, is located in Tai Wai adjacent to The Wai shopping mall and the Tai Wai MTR Station with an entrance separate from the mall. The new campus has around 15,000 square meters of modern teaching space which includes a 200 seat auditorium, 100-seat lecture theaters, 30 small classrooms and purpose-built laboratories that can accommodate up to 3,300 students.[7]

All students attending classes at the new Tai Wai Campus will have access to campus facilities such as the learning commons, cafeteria, Gym and dance studio located on the 3rd floor. The 2nd floor UOWCHK library is accessible from both inside and outside the campus for UOW college students and Hong Kong secondary school student alike.[7]

[edit]

The Kowloon City Campus was used as a temporary campus for the transition period before relocating to their permanent main campus in Tai Wai in August 2023. The Kowloon City campus has around 87,000 square feet of modern teaching spaces and informal student learning areas which are conveniently linked to public transport and nearby amenities. The Kowloon City Campus was closed at the end of August 2023 as students taking 2023 summer semester courses conclude their studies.[citation needed]

[edit]

Kowloon Bay Telford Annex Campus was used by UOWCHK up to June 2021 and is now no longer used. This old campus is located in Telford Plaza, Kowloon Bay and connected to MTR Kowloon Bay station. The Telford Campus has specially designed facilities for teaching and learning. It has Lecture Theatres, Group Study Rooms as well as regular classrooms, on-site Computer Laboratories with printing services that are open to students at designated periods. Notebook computers are available for loan to students for their use on campus, while all students can stay connected on campus with wireless LAN.[citation needed]
