This isn't properly resolving on the Vandalism in progress page. RickK 21:19, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)
- Update - it is resolving now, since the upgrade to Wikimedia 1.5 a few days ago. – Mateo SA | talk 17:36, Dec 26, 2004 (UTC)
This template seems to be a functional duplicate of one already created - Template:User. Why is it protected, anyway? -- Netoholic @ 23:05, 2005 Feb 7 (UTC)
Block not working
If a user has a space in their username (eg Censor of Wikipedia (talk • contribs • of Wikipedia block) ) the block link takes you to the block page and only inserts the first word into the user name to be blocked field. The rest of the words remain behind in the link name. Any way in which this can be fixed? -- Francs2000 | Talk 14:06, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've tried Censor of Wikipedia (talk • contribs • block) but that doesn't work. Forgive me but I'm not good at formatting these things. -- Francs2000 | Talk 14:13, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
Um...I don't understand the current form of the template at all. Does this work for anyone: block? The Special:Blockip/NAME link doesn't put anything into the block-page's name field. I think the link has to either be:
or:
So far as I can tell, this:
doesn't work. Func( t, c, e, ) 00:25, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- Why don't you try
- It might work with usernames that include spaces.
- None of those links will work for someone whose username has a space in it. That was the identified problem before, that led to the link being reverted. -- Francs2000 | Talk 12:28, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- Blah! :) Yeah, I did some experimenting last night, and couldn't get anything to work. It's up to the developers, either:
- the form Special:Blockip/NAME should be made to work, or
- wikilinks should be extended to allow appended query strings: PAGE?label=value&label=value
- such that we could have:
- Special:Blockip?ip=First Middle Last Name and the server will encode the spaces for us

new template showing logs
I've made a new template that shows user logs:
vandal-l
Hopefully, this could help keep track of image vandals. Note that for this template, the input name is case-sensitive. --Ixfd64 05:51, 2005 September 6 (UTC)

Uh, what problem are you guys trying to fix? It broke the pagemove and block log links. I've protected the page. -- Curps 00:15, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- The space is usernames is causing problems, like on the Communism vandal's page. I and Amgine (From on IRC) are trying to fix it. 68.39.174.238 00:30, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- You have to use underscores instead of spaces in usernames that have spaces (they're treated equivalent). It's a bit silly, it ought to just work with space... but templates are a bit primitive. -- Curps 00:33, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

- The thing is, a template is "live"... when you change it, every page that incorporates it changes too, so if it breaks, those pages break. The changes you guys made broke the "page moves" and "block log" links. It's best to experiment with possible fixes by making a local copy of the template and working with that. If your local copy is at

I've made this new template that shows deleted edits. I hope that vandal fighters will find it helpful. :) --Ixfd64 19:50, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
New version to substitute for the current instructions
Rather than induce cache reloads that would make no difference except server burdens and lessening the confusion of at most a handful of template users per month, i have not edited in the following revised text for the Usage section. Would the next editor making a more substantial change (or someone who knows that cache has just been cleared by a reboot?) please include this in a future edit (or just do it if my caution is misplaced):
Composite Current/Revised text showing diffs via strike & bold:
NOTE: If username has SPACE ' ' within it, use UNDERSCORE _ instead (as the SECOND parameter), its unfixable for logs, there is no wikilink to go to a user's logs. It's not the template's fault, its the fault of whoever's using the template. (ex: use Willy on wheels rather than Willy on wheels.
NOTE: If the username has SPACE ' '(" ") within it, use UNDERSCORE _("_") instead (in repeating the username as the SECOND parameter), its; it's unfixable for logs, since there is no wikilink to go to a user's logs. It's not the template's fault, its the fault ofit's a conspiracy between the URL specifications and whoever's using the template. Suggestion
There's no point in including a link to page moves for anonymous IP addresses, as they aren't allowed to move pages at all. It is merely annoying, space-filling, and misleading. It'd be nice if it could be removed for anon IPs. --maru (talk) contribs 03:47, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
New name
I hereby propose that this template be moved to userlinks. Some users in otherwise good standing don't like to see the word "vandal" next to their username just because we want to link to stuff like their block log. --Cyde Weys 21:49, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. New users get offended by this. If they're good-faith editors, that's bad. If they're not good-faith editors, it gets in the way of trying to talk them into being good-faith editors. But how do we get people to stop using vandal and switch over to userlinks ? FreplySpang 16:33, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- #REDIRECT Template:nn
nn
for the technical part. Or onlynn
, then attempts to usevandal
fail. Compromises between these extremes are probably a bad idea. -- Omniplex 06:06, 25 May 2006 (UTC)- I support the re-naming (I like using this template quite liberally to get all the links (very useful), even if I don't want to call someone a vandal. I think we should use the re-direct option, as this template is so widely used. Petros471 12:18, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I've been bold and moved it. Please fix any formatting issues you feel appropriate. Regards, --Celestianpower háblame 12:46, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
There is no reason to break, or even deprecate usage of the now-redirect title of template:vandal. People will still use it at WP:AIV, etc., even if it's not, um... politically correct. Even if you managed to re-train all users to use the new title, it would still be disruptive to anyone attempting to read old revisions which use the Mr._Pelican_Shit
syntax. — May. 28, '06 [06:48] <freak|talk>
- It would only be "disruptive" if vandal was actually deleted rather than just left as a redirect. --Cyde↔Weys 06:52, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good renaming. The "vandal" template was originated, if I recall correctly, for WP:VIP; it was attempted many times back when there was a limit to the number of template expansions allowed in a single article, and then everyone breathed a sigh of relief (yes, everyone, and if you want me to dig out reliable sources, I will) when "subst" started working with parameters. It really should have stayed on VIP, but it was too convenient to resist using elsewhere. One would think just the name and the principle of avoiding newbie-biting would have sufficed to keep the unexpanded form off of regular talk pages. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 14:39, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

TT tags around username
Ack. I don't like this change, and while I understand the reasoning, it's really not necessary. Is there a reason to keep this? Tijuana Brass¡Épa! 06:14, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. The <code> is quite distracting in my honest opinion. -- Netsnipe (Talk) 19:56, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
It's used so the font is display differently, because I l looks like I l
in that font. Helpful identifying doppleganger accounts.
example:
- Jimbo Wales (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (real one)
- Jimbo WaIes (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (fake vandal)
with tt tags:
Jimbo Wales (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
(real one)Jimbo WaIes (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
Notice you can't tell the difference without the tags.--Andeh 22:08, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
When we see the template still be used with the vandal syntax, should we replace it?
The vandal template is still being used regularly; as an example, see the wiki code here. When we see the template used on recently-edited pages, should we replace it with userlinks? Captainktainer * Talk 01:46, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
No, it's not worth committing an edit just to replace a template redirect that isn't broken. The correct way to handle this is to point out to the person that they should be using userlinks over vandal in cases of non-blatant vandalism. --Cyde Weys 02:20, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
userlinks2 - new version with bot marker
I've just created a new version of userlinks that allows administrators to hide vandalism from recent changes with one click instead of having to manually add "&bot=1" to the URL.
Enjoy! --Ixfd64 05:39, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
