Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Modafinil, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Timothy Grant. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Pig in a blanket

[edit]

I just tried to go to the article for pig in a blanket and got redirected to pigs in blankets. This bugs me because a) "pigs in blankets" *sounds* weird, and b) naming guidelines (WP:SINGULAR) say to avoid plurals. I figured I'd check the page history for the redirect to see if the article could be moved over the redirect, but it has more than one history entry. I was going to say "screw it", but after clicking away a username flashed across my line of sight and instead I said, "holy shit, it's Gwern".

I don't have the wherewithal to deal with Wikipedia bullshittery anymore to try and get someone to do a proper move, but I thought that you might if brought to your attention.

Proposed deletion of Portable Standard Lisp

[edit]

The article Portable Standard Lisp has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable variant of lisp

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Do you still have access to that book and scanning equipment?

[edit]

Hey, I noticed a copyright issue with an image you apparently uploaded to Commons eleven years ago. I'd need to be a complete lunatic to hold it against you that you made a mistake that long ago, but while I removed most of the non-PD text, there is still some text visible on the opposite side of the page, and was wondering if you would be able to re-scan the image with perhaps a dimmer light or something? Sorry, I know even less about scanning than image editing (and I made the change that I did in MS Paint...). Hijiri 88 (やや) 22:55, 30 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, I have to click through and stare at it to see any text. I made the scan from a library book I had ILLed at the time, so I do not; but by sheer coincidence in the past few weeks, I have been going back through my articles on gwern.net & WP and buying cited books in order to scan & upload them, and have already ordered a copy of Japanese Court Poetry. --Gwern (contribs) 03:01 1 October 2017 (GMT)

Hey Gwern, thanks for adding those missing testimony docs for this case. When I first added the docs in that collection ~10+ years ago, for some reason they weren't all available through PACER. I haven't had a chance to read through the links you added, but I plan to at some point in the future. jlcoving (talk) 00:09, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the docket timeline is confusing. For some reason, the transcripts were yanked and then new versions posted later, which was confusing because I wasn't sure if I'd gotten all of Skinner's or not... I didn't care enough to download the additional filings to figure out what went on there, as my experience has been that when filings get amended like that, the reason is often boring, and I had spent enough money at that point. (Getting all of them cost $50!) I still wasn't able to get some of the transcripts listed as I got permission-denied errors, which I assume means they were hidden for confidentiality or secrecy or something. If you're interested, you might want to retry PACER. The docket should also be on RECAP now. --Gwern (contribs) 00:46 1 October 2018 (GMT)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Superplastic requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Sourcing and citing health content in WP

[edit]

It would be much easier for everyone to analyze your sourcing if you used the standard citation templates and cited the PMID. There is an easy tool to use, based into the editing window's toolbar (I only learned about it myself a couple of years ago).

The note below provides brief information about the editing community defines "primary" and "secondary" sources per WP:MEDDEF and a concrete explanation on how to format citations from WP:MEDHOW...

Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Please remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN.

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "cite" click on it
  2. Then click on "templates",
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in the details beside a magnifying glass followed by clicking said button,
  4. If the article is available in Pubmed Central, you have to add the pmc parameter manually -- click on "show additional fields" in the template and you will see the "pmc" field. Please add just the number and don't include "PMC".

Please don't take this as pointy. Jytdog (talk) 22:07, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AE filing

[edit]

Arbcom is set to de facto ban him (he cannot resume editing without permission from the Arbitration Committee) and it looks like they will block him indefinitely, and so he can't be sanctioned further for behaviour at that AfD, and thus there's no point to an AE filing, and I'd suggest withdrawing/removing it. Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:26, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I see. I didn't realize that his talk page edit was in response to that.
I would still like to see an AE resolution, to condemn his behavior and affirm the topic ban, in case he ever comes back, and send a message about trying to redefine 'GMO' even after being specifically told to interpret it 'broadly'. I still have to deal with the consequences of his harassment even if he has been indef banned for other things. --Gwern (contribs) 17:30 4 December 2018 (GMT)
I suggest that the only venue at the current time to raise the concerns you're raising is on the arbitration page. But keep in mind that the issues relate to something totally unrelated to what you are raising. If you decide to participate you may want to be mindful of that. Polygenic score flagged for expert-subject genetics

[edit]

Just to let you know, I flagged polygenic score for expert-subject genetics just now, due to the complexity of the language in the lead, which has remained relatively unchanged since you added this passage back in November 2016.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes I am myself more in the mood to fill a gap than to find ideal language. Nevertheless, on a dispassionate footing, I bounce around in this kind of material a lot, and rarely do I encounter a sentence like this one that defeats even my second reading (though I did eventually clue in). If you still recall your own intent, you'd be the best person to unravel this language in the first instance. Part of the problem pertains to "hits" being a common English word, so phrase-binding does not at first proceed as abstractly as it might otherwise do were a jargon lexeme to take its place. — MaxEnt 01:48, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Emotionality, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Big Five. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:36, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Norman R. Maier moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Norman R. Maier, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Thingofme (talk) 13:49, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article CLX (Common Lisp) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Cannot find enough sources to establish notability. Tagged as non-notable for over a decade without improvement

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:27, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Joyce Cary requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

Oh good! You're still here.

[edit]

This is beautifully written:

"As events happen, suddenly the past reconfigures itself; events reveal themselves to have meaning that they didn’t have until years later—meeting one’s first husband, and the conception of a child. With one fall, a sequence of life events suddenly snaps into place as a story with a beginning, an arc, and an end. Meaning is understood retroactively. The owl flies at dusk."

I was reading this when I happened upon this. The owl flies at dusk. It is so perfect and the paragraph is in your words, not Ted Chiang's. (I like his short stories and recall reading, with confusion, the one about Louise and the Heptapods).-- FeralOink (talk) 14:51, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you enjoyed it. :) It is a confusing story, isn't it? But it has a beautiful idea at the core, and I tried to do it some justice. --Gwern (contribs) 19:25 26 November 2023 (GMT)

Inspectigation

[edit]

Your analysis is pretty impressive. I also read that Harper's article, and I've been going through some deleted revisions about it. I have noticed a couple extra things -- interested in pursuing this further. I'd also like to publish what you discerned in the Signpost. Let me know what you think! jp×g🗯️ 06:24, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad to hear an admin is looking into it. I don't think he should get a pass on so much POV pushing and WP manipulation just because he confessed as a "story" & Harper's readers like the political POV being pushed...
But I've done as much as I have the time to spare. (I was actually just killing time before Thanksgiving dinner because my real work was hard to focus on.) Feel free to write it up in Signpost or anything, I stand by it. --Gwern (contribs) 18:46 26 November 2023 (GMT)
Any updates on this? I thought The Signpost story was disappointing and didn't get into any of this. --Gwern (contribs) 14:26 3 February 2024 (GMT)
Just a small note that Harper's published a letter from fellow Wikimedian Annie Rauwerda regarding the article. Ckoerner (talk) 18:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I disagree, but it could have been stronger. For example, Lerner could make amends by being more forthcoming about what he did, so perhaps it can be fixed, instead of trying to have his cake & eat it too. --Gwern (contribs) 18:59 5 February 2024 (GMT)

For some reason I'm discussing minutiae of Dunning-Kruger, and I blame you.

[edit]

So somehow I got caught up in a discussion over at Talk:Dunning–Kruger_effect#DK_Effect_is_Simply_Autocorrelation (in the unlikely event you really wanted to know). Plot twist: it turns out it's all your fault!

I got into this because I was reading (among others) the full text of gignac et al over at gwern.net . I only noticed the domain just now. %-)

Nice that you're hosting it. Did you ever use that text in one of your blog posts or so? --Kim Bruning (talk) 04:57, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not as such. I was looking into it after Gignac & Zajenkowski 2020 came out via Andrew Gelman's blog because it was one of the better demonstrations that Dunning-Kruger is mostly or entirely spurious, and I thought that I might make the topic a newsletter entry or maybe an entry on my regression-to-the-mean-related fallacies page (since it's mostly driven by measurement error enabling misinterpretation of the resulting regression to the mean). But I haven't yet - one of these days... --Gwern (contribs) 14:49 28 November 2023 (GMT)

You added a bunch of references (and other content), way back when. I think that it's probably "Campaign for Labour Rights" rather than "Campaign for Labor Rights", as I have been able to find a few references to the former organization. I have not, however, been able to find "Newsletter Number 9". Any ideas? All the best: Rich Farmbrough 16:16, 19 March 2024 (UTC).[reply]
