Scope
[edit]Is there a reason the European regional parliaments of Russia are not included here? They could be added in in some way, and perhaps some of the other federal/autonomous parliaments in other states added in as well. Itried to add them but I don't understand the source code so I appeal to @PrimeHunter: for comment, and for thanks in creating this template. GPinkerton (talk) 03:07, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- @GPinkerton: It uses {{Europe topic}} and can only add the entities at Template:Europe topic#Altering the link used for a specific entity. I chose to include Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales which are often given special treatment but they could have been omitted. England has no own parliament so it's omitted. PrimeHunter (talk) 07:56, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter, well the numerous parliaments of the federal republics of Russia are (at least) as important as is the Northern Ireland Assembly (which is not strictly speaking the defunct Parliament of Northern Ireland)) and if space can be found for Transnistria it might be worth adding them in as actual bona fide parliaments, not unlike the Flemish Parliament (which also should be included alongside the Parliament of Wallonia) which is also 1.) a parliament and 2.) in Europe. If it's technically possible to include more parliaments, I think they ought to be included. GPinkerton (talk) 08:09, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- {{Europe topic}} doesn't allow it. {{Parliaments in Europe}} would have to be recoded completely in another way. We have national templates like {{Regional parliaments of Russia}}, {{Governments of Belgium}}, {{Landtage of Germany}} and so on. I think {{Parliaments in Europe}} would become too bloated if everything subnational was included. We do also have {{UK legislatures}} and some of them could have been omitted. I just included what is in {{Europe topic}}. Before I created the template, the articles displayed the below (with minor variations in the title). It looks almost identical but mostly links to redirects so it doesn't give bold selflinks on the articles. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are not default so they weren't included. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:34, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter, maybe then it would be nice to have a "national/subnational/regional parliaments in Europe" template so the whole continent's legislatures could be seen together. I'm also interested in the name. Should this be "legislatures in Europe" rather than "parliaments"? GPinkerton (talk) 14:44, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- @GPinkerton: Where would a "national/subnational/regional parliaments in Europe" template be displayed? These templates are for reader navigation. I think few readers about Belgian subnational legislatures will be interested in Russian subnational legislatures, and a huge template would be off-putting to many. I think "Parliaments in Europe" is better when it's only national. "Legislatures in Europe" would probably be better if a lot of subnationals were included. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:34, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter, I would suggest such a template would be used in place of this one, or that this one should be a section of a larger one, and it would appear on all such pages (easing navigation)
- I think it's problematic to include some and not others in the present format. Excluding federal states' parliaments (in federal states) while including such things as the Gibraltar Parliament (part of a unitary state) and the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State (a "parliament" smaller than most parliamentary committees, government cabinets, and mediaeval privy councils) seems odd. GPinkerton (talk) 17:07, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- @GPinkerton: I think a giant template with subnationals would be clearly against WP:NAVBOX. I'm OK with removing the whole "Dependencies and other entities" group. Eight UK links seems excessive. Scotland, Wales and often Northern Ireland are called countries, at least in British English, and they have a large interest among our readers. The Vatican has enough independence to include. It's nearly always included in lists of countries. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:29, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter, on the Vatican: sure, but not in lists of democracies or in lists of legislatures. A handful of cardinals does not a parliament make! Again, (although some would argue Northern Ireland is not a country per se) the point is that if those legislatures are included, why not more significant and powerful ones like the Parliament of Walloonia (which if I remember right dominated Canada-EU relations for the best part of a decade)? GPinkerton (talk) 22:16, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- @GPinkerton: You can edit the template if you want. As mentioned, the currently used {{Europe topic}} can only add what is at Template:Europe topic#Altering the link used for a specific entity. The readers don't care about the Parliament of Wallonia. Page view comparison. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:03, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
