I dislike the prevention of other elections that someone added. These templates are added to the bottom of every election page and if the indirect ones aren't listed, noone will ever find them. I note that, for instance, all of the executive elections in {{Hong Kong elections}} were indirect. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 17:58, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pakistani secession

[edit]

In regards to inclusion of pre-Pakistan elections, it's important to recall that Pakistan seceded from India and that the contemporary Republic of India is the successor state of British India. The central institutions of British India were inherited by the Union of India, and Pakistan was created on the basis of a secessionist agitation. There is no pre-independence 'Pakistani' history, however there is a continuum of Indian history prior to Independence. --Soman (talk) 14:30, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did Pakistan secede? Wasn't it partitioned by the British? I can't find anything outside of Wikipedia stating India was the successor state to the Raj. Number 57 14:35, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it did secede. There was a movement, that invented a hitherto unknown national identity. India on the other hand existed as an entity for much longer. The Pakistan movement sought to carve out a national territory out of India, whilst the Indian nationalists sought independence for all of British India. The Union of India retained the colonial capital and the many of the central institutions of British India, whilst Pakistan had to set up new structures for a national centre. I think previous wikipedia discussions on 'Ancient Pakistan' should serve as a reference here (in CfD, somewhere). --Soman (talk) 17:52, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand how it seceded - the British were the ones who made the decision to divide the country and the Indian Independence Acts states "As from the fifteenth day of August, ninteen hundred and forty-seven, two independent Dominions shall be set up in India, to be known respectively as India and Pakistan.". This and this source suggests Pakistan is a successor state whilst this suggests it isn't.
If it isn't a successor state, then I don't mind them being removed, although we should perhaps have a below section similar to {{Slovenian elections}} directing readers to the India template for pre-independence elections. However, I would like to see some more reliable sources that this is indeed true. Number 57 18:11, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
