Has the dust settled yet?
Hey guys, I think the idea of this template is good, but has the dust settled yet? What is the outcome? Is there some WP:ODNT here? Peet Ern (talk) 21:30, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- Eh, I just gave up and removed it from my watchlist. I also unprotected it since the dispute is over and I don't plan on making other edits. Feel free to do whatever you like though. --CapitalR (talk) 00:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Guidance
I and a few other editors are overhauling the CIA page, and have reached a bit of a quandry with our infobox. The CIA is overseen not only buy its director and deputy/assistant directors, but also by the Director of National Intelligence, who oversees all or most of the US intelligence community. Therefore, while the position of DNI is certainly an oversight position for the CIA, it is equally not an "agency executive". Right now the page uses the rather awkward field of "minister responsible" to list the current DNI, as the DNI position, being the next step down from the President in responsibility for the CIA, is in some way more akin to the ministerial level of responsibility than an agency executive. Would a "cabinet member responsible" optional field be inappropriate for this template? Any thoughts? (Morethan3words (talk) 09:06, 25 January 2008 (UTC))
Scaling of seals
Within the examples, and also within the National_Reconnaissance_Office article that promtped me to check the infobox topic, the seals are humongous, spanning half the page or more. Apparently, adding "| thumb" to it doesn't thumbnail it like the image tag. I don't know if this is just for SVG files or, for that matter, it's a matter of IE 7.0.5730.13 on Windows XP SP 2, but I figured I'd mention it here. -Fuzzy (talk) 16:57, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

- It appears that since the discussion of scaling seals above, an edit was made to limit all graphics within the template to 180 px. (I'm not sure who or when, but didn't have the time to go through the history in that much detail.) Therefore, I recently (September 2009) inserted a descriptive indicator on the instruction section for all "_width" fields for picture/seal/logo/map that specifies that their is a maximum of 180 px width. This would be helpful to editors using this template to know that if they enter anything larger than 180, their images will be limited to 180. StanfordHarvie1 (talk) 14:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Annual Budget problem
"Annual budget" doesn't show in articles with this template. I tried to fix it, it did show up but the rest got messed up so I reverted my edit. Can this be fixed?--Avala (talk) 21:14, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
- I just added an option to add coordinates under "Headquarters", in the same style as in Template:Infobox Country, but apparently missed a line at the end. It should work fine now though, sorry for the mess (I should have tested it more before I added it). /Slarre (talk) 21:41, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Ministry fields
The current template requires that you enter a link to the minister's name, in order for the Ministry to show up. This is not sustainable from a maintenance perspective as you have to go through (manually or bot) and change every page every time the minister changes (which can be often in parliamentary systems; cabinet shuffles may occur yearly). The accountable ministry changes much, much less often than the minister - if I could just display the ministry that would solve the problem. In a perfect world, we could pull the current minister's name in some automated way from the ministry page itself. Rakerman (talk) 18:25, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Coordinates Display
Would it be possible for users to select whether to display coordinates
- in the infobox,
- at the top of the article, or
- both.
- Though this ancient request did not offer any reasons, here are a few current ones:
- "mysterious" anonymous coordinates at far right of page header, egs: FBI, NSA, DoD, etc. (but not CIA which somebody fixed, or DIA which nobody plotted) -- actually somewhat meaningless up there if agency has multiple important facilities like FDA#Regional_facilities and NASA#Facilities.
- given #1, best to make "just infobox" the default but STILL allow pages to select the style if needed.
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
- However, since the selection is not even controlled by this template but rather by the "display" parameter of the explicit template:coord call in the "coordinates" parameter [of this template], as per stated usage syntax/parameters/examples here, then all that is needed here is to remove all instances of the "title" param-value from said usage instructions. That just leaves having a bot do the same to all those other explicit coordinates-parameter coord-template calls out there. If you are requesting the bot run, then edit template-protected is the wrong forum for it; post at Wikipedia:Bot requests. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:19, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Map section
I added (September 2009) a section to this template to allow for a map area at the bottom of the infobox. Many government agencies are regional in nature and it would be helpful for them to have a place to put a map of the area at the bottom. I essentially copied the code from the picture/seal/logo code and changed it to say "map" instead of "picture/seal/logo". I also inserted a Map bar above the section by copying the other title bars in the code. Of course, like other options, if the map fields are left blank, nothing appears. Here is the code I inserted in the document subpage:
|map = |map_width = |map_caption =
Here is the code I inserted in the template itself:
{{#if:{}| ! colspan=2 style="background-color: #efefef; text-align: center" Map - colspan=2 style="text-align: center" - {{#if:{}| colspan=2 style="text-align: center" {} -
I am open to the community's thoughts on this new field. It is used on Template:Geobox (especially for rivers) and is very helpful for readers to see the region covered. Of course, this won't be useful for all agencies (like those obviously associated with a specific jurisdiction), but it could be very helpful for these regional government agencies and commissions. StanfordHarvie1 (talk) 14:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
nativename italic
Why is |nativename=
italic? This is not italic in prose so why is it in the infobox? Xeworlebi (talk) 21:59, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Good question. I would support removing the italics. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:26, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I've removed them. Xeworlebi (talk) 18:33, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Type and Agency_type
There should be some changes to the "|type = " parameter so that the value does not alter the parent, child, preceding, superseding, and chiefs parameters. For example, the "US Department of Defense" would have a "|type = Department " parameter, but that would make "child departments" and in general, a department is he highest form of agency, therefore there is no "child department", also for example if the lets say "institute of soccer" uses "|type=Institute", the parent agency shouldnt say "Parent Institute" if it belongs to lets say the "Ministry of Sport".
And can someone explain what is the "|agency_type=" parameter, it doesnt seem to make any changes to the infobox so whats the use. mijotoba (talk) 11:18, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
New Field: Expenditure
While I'm a bit hazy on this kind of stuff, I believe that the current field, 'Budget', relates to a prediction at the beginning of the year in a political speech, while the government agency Annual Report at the end of the year shows the actual level of expenditure. As such, might it be informative to provide figures for both budgeted and actual expenditure? Thanks, BrekekekexKoaxKoax (talk) 09:12, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Should I attempt to make the changes to the template myself? Thanks,BrekekekexKoaxKoax (talk) 14:01, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
New Field: Audit Opinion
Can a new field also please be added for audit opinion, as is currently under discussion on the company infobox template. This could be populated with 'Unqualified', 'Qualified' (maybe subdivided into (1) probs with financial reporting (2) probs with underlying transactions), 'Withheld', 'Missing'. Thanks, BrekekekexKoaxKoax (talk) 09:15, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Similar to above, and please see company infobox talk for similar (and maybe United States Department of Defense) for how notable all this can be. BrekekekexKoaxKoax (talk) 14:05, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Why executives and not Executives
When used for Philadelphia Parking Authority, this template shows the executives under "executives" rather than "Executives" but most templates use caps on entry items, as does this one for most items. Please change. --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:13, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Increasing number of child agencies
Just about every Australian government department has more than 6 child agencies and editors are simply cramming several names into one field to get them to show. I have increased the number of child_agency fields to 25. eg. Attorney-General's Department (Australia) Maxious (talk) 05:57, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Jurisdiction parameter
The term "jurisdiction" has 4 separate meanings: 1. the right or authority to apply the law, as with courts of law; 2. the basic sovereign authority of a government; 3. the territory or area within which authority is granted or exercised; and 4. the political or judicial subdivisions of a governmental or sovereign authority. The template Description – "Name of the jurisdiction in which the agency resides" – implies a physical location, e.g., the territory, area, or nation where the agency is. But the template Value gives government entities as examples – "Text eg; Government of Western Australia or United States Government". I dare not change the template Field Name as I think doing so would probably screw thing up. But I think changing the Description to "Name of the government in which the agency operates" is a good idea. That way we avoid territory type (3) values, issues as to the right or power to apply the law (1 & 2), and it focuses better on the particular government (4) of which the agency is a part of. (I'll wait for some comments before making any changes.) – S. Rich (talk) 16:53, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm wondering if it's possible to create new parameters for cases when a government agency has been dissolved but later reopened.
I'm having multiple issues with some Colombian government agencies that have reopened after some "experimental integration" due to budgetary reasons, so for example the Ministries of Justice, and the Ministry of the Interior were fused together to form the Ministry of the Interior and Justice, and were last year once again separated, I had initially created the Ministry of the Interior and Justice (Colombia) which reads that it was formed out of those two agencies and later and dissolved, but the Ministry of Justice and Law (Colombia) reads that it was formed just last year when in reality it was formed in 1993 but indicating that would erase the mention of that Interior and Justice merge. Just thought I'd asked to see if there can be a way to address this matter. mijotoba (talk) 00:14, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
Please add a parameter for flags
Please add a parameter for flags, as many governmental agencies have flags of their own. Thanks! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 05:20, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
Superseding
Can parameters be added/changed to indicate that an agency was superseded by more than one agency, as in the case of the Ministry of Social Protection of Colombia that was dissolved and divided into two separate ministries, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. Something like |superseding1=, |superseding2=, much like the |preceding1= |preceding2= fields that change the fieldname from "Preceding agency" to "Preceding agencies" so it would read "superseding agencies" as well. Thanks. mijotoba (talk) 15:58, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Capitalisation of "agency"
If this template is used with parent_agency set, it displays "Parent Agency" in title case. (Example) However it should display sentence case, eg "Parent agency", per MOS:CAPS. Could someone familiar with template syntax fix it please. Mitch Ames (talk) 09:19, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Done. I also changed "Child Agency" to "Child agency" - Evad37 (talk) 12:28, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
Sister agency?

Parameter for Anthem/March?
Some government agencies have anthems or marches used as a "theme song" for the agency, if you will. Should we add a parameter for that into the infobox to represent that? I'd like to hear some thoughts. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 20:03, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Departments/Ministries and Agencies
Of course I can see that the desire was for a common template that could be used for the enormously wide range of governmental structures that exist globally. I do find this a rather strange template, viewed from UK, where the expression "government agency" has a much more restrictive application, and certainly does not include ministries/departments. It gives the rather absurd result that a department can be preceded and succeeded by an agency. I can see that the appropriate type of agency for the main subject is facilitated by the |type= parameter but this is not carried through to the [preceding1= and |superseding= fields. On the face of it, this should be possible as it is already achieved with the |chief1_name= parameter. An alternative approach could be additional preceding_type= and superseding_type= parameters (which would default to "agency" if blank and would not consequently affect any existing infoboxes). Problems with outcome when using this box
Hi I recently tried to change some names in the infobox for this article Board of Admiralty. For |type = Board it reads Board Overview instead of agency. This changed the officials to Board Executives instead of agency executives which is fine. However preceding this board was an (office) it now reads as preceding board. Superseding this board was another (board) it now reads (superseding agency) both of which are not the correct terms. You can see another example where its a division and the same type of problem occurs here: Anti-Submarine Division does anyone no how to correct this?--Navops47 (talk) 03:24, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
- I have been told that it might require require an extension to the current definition and implementation of the Template so that I have the options to add next to preceding either, Board, Branch, Division, Council, Committee and the same for superseding.--Navops47 (talk) 09:47, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
- Navops47, I fixed it for you. Frietjes (talk) 16:49, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Frietjes I have not visited this for a while and missed your reply and apologies for my very late response many thanks for attempting to resolve it, the problem I am still having which really affects all Royal Navy articles is shown in the infobox below. You will notice that the type is a Division (this is correct), preceding it is a Department not a preceding Division, superseding it is a Division not an Agency. The type field works fine however the options available to provide the correct term for what type of organisational structure precedes it or supersedes it, is incorrect. The problem with the Royal Navy it uses many different organisational descriptions such as Board, Branch, Committee, Council, Department, Division, Establishment, Office, Section. This is what needs changing.--Navops47 (talk) 02:43, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Edit request
I know I can theoretically edit this myself, but I'd rather not as I'm not very familiar with template syntax. I would simply like the template to support an eighth responsible minister, needed by Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (I know, it's absurd but it's true. Acronym parameter
Please add a parameter for Acronym, as all agencies & other government bodies are more recognised by their acronyms. Thanks! -Ninney (talk) 19:37, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
- I agree with need for acronym parameters. - HugoHelp (talk) 23:24, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- I agree too. Could it be called "abbreviation", since about 400 pages are already trying to use that parameter (per Category:Pages using infobox government agency with unknown parameters)? Suelru (talk) 17:19, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Agency ID
I've added an Agency ID parameter (agency_id) to the infobox. In Australia at least, departments and agencies change frequently, so records authorities like Public Record Office Victoria and State Archives and Records Authority of New South Wales assign a unique identifier to agencies of their respective governments. I will hazard a guess that this occurs elsewhere, but for Australia at least, this is an effective form of disambiguation and authority control between agencies that may share similar names but be from different eras. For Victoria at least, I will be linking the ID to the appropriate record. Triptothecottage (talk) 12:01, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Wikidata
Would it make sense to use (some) Wikidata information in these templates? There's a lot of basic information we store in information that could/would be better stored in Wikidata and pulled from there. For example, I've recently gone through and done a (rough around the edges) reorganisation of the ministries for Tanzania. Details like when a ministry was formed, dissolved, websites, etc are duplicated between here and Wikidata, which is time-consuming for rather simple data. --Lewis Cawte (Talk) 15:09, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
New parameter documentation
I've had a go at updating the documentation to include the distinction between |type and |agency_type, and to include |parent_agency_type. Thanks to all those who've worked on that messy stuff. However, I know what I've written isn't very clear, and it needs additional eyes to try and make it comprehensible. Triptothecottage (talk) 22:46, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
New Parameter Proposal: Responsibility
I propose a new Parameter:
- Responsibility
Values would be e.g.:
- Postal Services
- Defense
- Environmental Protection
- Aviation Safety
Etc. --RScheiber (talk) 17:08, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose The vast majority of government agencies give a clear indication of their function in their name; in those cases where responsibilities are complex or not immediately obvious, the information is better presented in prose. Triptothecottage (talk) 00:38, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Superseding agencies
Hello, when putting multiple superseding agencies of a different type (e.g. Government department) the template seems to still default to the word "agency". I think the code uses the word "service" instead of "type" (like the preceding agency code does). Is this an error or am I doing something wrong? Bookscale (talk) 03:35, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Multiple parent agencies
For example, there could be situations where the agency would report to one department and also another. Viztor (talk) 02:48, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Viztor: Got an example? In my editing dealing with agencies in Australia, lines of responsibility are generally strictly hierarchical. But if there's a use case, I see no reason not to add multiple parameters. We have them for everything else! Triptothecottage (talk) 11:26, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- For example, a city-level police department reports to the city council but also its superior provincial police department. Viztor (talk) 12:13, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- A police department should be using Infobox law enforcement agency, but as I say, I see no reason this functionality shouldn't exist. Triptothecottage (talk) 12:19, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
Agency type parameters
The difference between type
and agency_type
is subtle and to be frank rather confusing. I find myself having to check which is which every time I write a new one of these boxes. I'd like to suggest changing the parameter names to short_type
and full_type
respectively, while obviously leaving the current names as aliases. Thoughts? Triptothecottage (talk) 01:22, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- Agreed. I've never been able to get this template to work, given its utterly confusing use of parameters. --Paul_012 (talk) 22:12, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Correct logo_alt parameter
bsd. When logo_alt is not included in the infobox, it will show {}
when hovering over the logo (example). Please correct. Thanks in advance! --Ben Stone 15:24, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Changing "Child organisation" to "Daughter Organisation"
I believe the phrase "Child organisation" refers to subsidiaries, but the usage of Child organisation" is very rare/unheard of. I propose changing the phrase "Child organisation" to "Daughter Organisation" or "Subsidaries" or any of the synonyms mentioned in the wikipedia page, although the formers sounds better since we are already mentioning of "Parent organisation"--LostCitrationHunter (talk) 16:37, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Can the Template:Syrian ministries be merged into this template at it offers same functionality as this one which is mostly used across articles. - DownTownRich (talk) 03:11, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Edit request for unbulleted list readd an item_style parameter
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Readd an |item_style=
parameter to the data16 Unbulleted list for Agency executive/s. In a December 2015 edit, Comp.arch removed the item_style for Agency executive/s that had an indent. Unbulleted lists with the same item_style were added by user Izkala in a July 2015 edit (August 2015 user Quest for Truth added a new list). Data16 has 9 list items. Without the indent it has made it difficult to read articles with many list items such as United States National Security Council, National Emergency Management Agency (New Zealand) and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.--Melbguy05 (talk) 10:54, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Undesirable display issues
See Scottish Register of Tartans. The infobox there has a run-together mess in the left column which reads:
Keeper of the Scottish
Register of Tartans
responsible
Parent Non-ministerial
department
This isn't really very parseable. As best I can make out, there should be some kind of division after "Tartans", and the rest should read "Responsible parent non-ministerial department", capitalised thus, but instead there is no initial capital letter, and there is senseless mid-phrase capitalisation on "Parent" and "Non-". — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 00:29, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

I'd like to embed a child infobox inside of an infobox government agency using |module=
a la WP:IEmbed. Could someone apply the following change, which would allow me to do so?

For comparison, Special:Diff/1186133889 is me applying the same modification to infobox law firm (which wasn't template-protected). Thanks! DefaultFree (talk) 04:00, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, I see that there's already an
|embed=
parameter that would do what I need, although it's named contrary to WP:IEmbed conventions - usually you'd set|embed=yes
when embedding this infobox inside another. Withdrawing this request. DefaultFree (talk) 04:15, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Motto in English
Can we add a 'Motto in English' parameter like eg Template:Infobox university? Vasusrir429 (talk) 01:43, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there! Sure, why not! Are you able to edit it yourself? See templates for Government or find the proper fit with what you want to add! If you need help feel free to let me know or ping my name!
