Dependent territories / special territories
[edit]There's currently a discussion at template talk:East Asia over whether the official name of territory, namely special administrative region, and which sovereign State the territories listed belong to, have to be specified in the {{East Asia}} template. Please feel free to join the discussion and express your opinion. — Instantnood 11:47, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
"reckoned elsewhere" - is that really acceptable? Mark83 13:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

France
[edit]I see no reason why France should get its own section apart from the rest. It's as much a country in South America as any of the others. --Golbez (talk) 14:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- French Guiana is only a French (overseas) department, while metropolitan France is entirely within Europe. Conversely, the nations listed here as sovereign states are entirely, or almost entirely, within South America. We cannot equalize a department with a sovereign nation, nor cannot list France as a south american country, because it is not. Hence the section apart. - "Only?" That makes it part of the country, as much a part of France as Alaska is of the United States, Ceuta is of Spain, Kaliningrad is of Russia, and Northern Ireland is of the UK. France is a country in South America. (And Europe. And Africa. And North America. It's pretty cosmopolitan.) I would certainly hope you would be against equalizing a department with a nation, and no one has suggested that. The Africa template reflects that France (and Spain, and Italy, and Yemen) are African countries as well, why not South America reflecting that the same way? The fact that South America's countries are pretty confined to it shouldn't change that. (Though a few of them do creep into "North America", particularly some islands of Colombia and Venezuela. Also note that Chile is also in Oceania.) --Golbez (talk) 18:21, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- You said it, a part of he country. Not "the country". If you want to state that France is considered an equally European, South American, African, North American country, then please provide a relliable source. If not, I would believe your claim is just Original research, and that is what appears to be. Salut, --IANVS (talk) 16:46, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- The Africa template handles this very nicely, by pointing out the countries whose majorities are not in Africa, and noting the areas within Africa in parentheses. Perhaps renaming that entry "Partially in South America"? That would make it not France-specific. I wouldn't suggest putting Chile, Colombia, or Venezuela [or Argentina, depending on definitions] in there (those all having the vast majority of their territory in South America, with small parts elsewhere), but let's stop setting up French Guiana as having some special status. And I note that the North American template has no qualms about stating, correctly, that France is a country in North America, (added by me, yes, but has remained for 7 months) and again, the folks looking at the Africa template haven't minded either. --Golbez (talk) 18:26, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Trinidad, Tobago, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao
[edit]User:Cambalachero removed my addition of these islands, with the comment "See references at Caribbean", which I don't understand. These islands are geographically part of South America and therefore belong on this template. sephia karta | dimmi 23:19, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
