Capitals

[edit]

Hi @Kelvinsong: Great work on this template! I have one issue however: I understand you used lower case for style reasons, but organism and gene names have standardised names, and capitals are part of this. Therefore, Nicotiana should be in caps since it's a genus; same for genes such as NADH or RuBisCo... Tylototriton (talk) 09:27, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyanochic I changed the capitalisation on "Chloroplast DNA" and "Nicotiana"; if the genes should also be capitalised, I'd be happy to do that, but since it requires uploading a new version of a Commons image for each change, it would be good if all remaining changes could be done at once (Pinging Cyanochic from related discussion at Chloroplast). Overflow

[edit]

@Hairy Dude: Thank you for trying to fix the template! Unfortunately, the text now flows out to the right (at least for me, on Desktop, at Chloroplast), while it was fine for me before adding the max-width parameter to the div tags. Maybe a different approach could accommodate all use cases? Felix QW (talk) 12:57, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the max-width from the inner background div tag but kept it in the outer one, and it now works for me. If anyone could check whether it still works on smartphone, that would be great. Felix QW (talk) 13:08, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately not. It now overflows the left margin in portrait mode. Hairy Dude (talk) 13:53, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hairy Dude Could you do me the favour and head over to user:Felix QW/sandbox and tell me if that is any better? I don't want to mess with the mainspace template all the time, so I mocked it up in userspace. Felix QW (talk) 14:13, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I asked someone else with a smartphone to check, and it doesn't look any better sadly.
@Hairy Dude @Cyanochic I've asked at VPT for some advice. Maybe they have an idea. Felix QW (talk) 12:08, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Colours

[edit]

One more issue with the template is the use of colours, which I am pretty sure do not comply with MOS:Accessibility. My eyesight is generally alright, and even I struggle with the lack of contrast on "inverted repeat a" and "inverted repeat b". Should probably also be added to the to-do list when the Commons file is edited again. Felix QW (talk) 16:17, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This template violates MOS:SMALLTEXT, an accessibility guideline, which unambiguously states that In no case should the resulting font size of any text drop below 85% of the page's default font size. Setting explicit px font sizes of 10px results in text that is 66% of my browser's default of 15px. The smallest that is allowed for accessibility is 85%. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:18, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing out this issue! Would this also hold for using File:Nicotiana tabacum Choroplast genome.svg in the article directly, or is that better since the image could be enlarged by the reader more easily? Felix QW (talk) 14:32, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how screen readers interact with text in SVG files, so I can't say. The color contrast of some of the text with the white background does not appear to satisfy MOS:CONTRAST, though. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:31, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is clearly true - I had noted this in the section above this one, and am planning on addressing this on the image files soon. It is just that since overwriting Commons images is reasonably disruptive, I am waiting until all the things that need to be done are clear. Felix QW (talk) 16:03, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
