Template:Talk page of redirect/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Talk page of redirect. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template is used on approximately 33,000 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them. |
This template should only be used for actual talk pages of actual redirects. It should not be used to tag talk pages of soft redirects nor talk pages that are redirects themselves. Talk-page redirects should not be arbitrarily changed into talk pages with this template. Project banners, discussions, or deletion-discussion notices should already be in place before this template is used. |

Usage
[edit]Place this template on the talk page of a redirect when the content and history of the talk page and/or the history of the redirect page are to be preserved. The names of both the target page of the redirect and its talk page are automatically displayed.
This template populates Category:Talk pages of redirects and, if the subject page is not a redirect or if the talk page itself is a redirect, then Category:Pages with incorrectly transcluded templates is also populated by default and should be kept empty.
If no talk page exists for the redirect or if that talk page redirects to another page, then there is no need to use this template. If a talk page already exists, does not redirect to another page, and it has content, then position this template at the top of the talk page (not the redirect page) as follows:
{{Talk page of redirect}}
This goes above project banners and other such notices; it is the first thing someone at this erstwhile talk page should see.
Parameters
[edit]- Template Talk page of redirect has two unnamed (numbered) parameters:
|1=
is used to change the wording that follows "This is the talk page of a (or an)...". So instead of "article", "template", "project page" and such, another choice can be made, such as "shortcut", as in "This is the talk page of a shortcut...":{{Talk page of redirect|1=shortcut}}
|2=
is an alternative for|othertalk=
as detailed below.
- This template has two optional named parameters:
{{Talk page of redirect|othertalk=(alternative talk page)}}
- If the redirect was the result of a page merge, a
|merge=yes
parameter may also be included: {{Talk page of redirect|merge=yes}}
Othertalk parameter
[edit]|othertalk=
or|2=
can be used for an alternative talk page where future discussions should take place. Use this parameter when you want to suppress the talk page of the redirect's target in the following manner:
{{Talk page of redirect|othertalk=Wikipedia talk:Citing sources}}
This is the talk page of a redirect that targets: • Wikipedia:Manual of Style Because this page is not frequently watched, present and future discussions, edit requests and requested moves should take place at: • Wikipedia talk:Citing sources |
Merge parameter
[edit]- Add
|merge=yes
to show that the redirect was the result of a page merge as follows:
{{Talk page of redirect|merge=yes}}
This is the talk page of a redirect that has been merged and now targets • Wikipedia:Protection policy Because this page is not frequently watched, present and future discussions, edit requests and requested moves should take place at: • Wikipedia talk:Protection policy Merged page edit history is maintained in order to preserve attributions. |
Not a redirect
[edit]Converted from redirect to article or other page:
- If the subject page of a talk page is not a redirect, then the following box will be displayed:
This is the "Talk page of redirect" template. ERROR: This template is only for use on talk pages of redirects. If this message is visible, then the subject page is not a redirect nor at RfD, and this template should be removed from this page. |
- Note: If this template is on the talk page of a redirect that is converted into an article, a project page, etc., then the above error template will automatically replace the normal talk-page-of-redirect box. The talk page will then be sorted to a monitored maintenance category, and this template should be removed from the talk page.
Nominated at RfD:
- If the subject page of a talk page is a disabled redirect that has been nominated for discussion at RfD, then the following box will be displayed:
This is the talk page of a redirect. This page is currently at RfD which has disabled the redirect. Discussion about this redirect should occur at the RfD subject page linked to at (SUBJECTPAGENAME). |
Itself a redirect
[edit]If the talk page itself redirects to another page, then the following will be displayed:
This is the "Talk page of redirect" template. ERROR: This template is only for use on talk pages that are not themselves redirects. If this message is visible, then this page might be a redirect, and this template might need to be removed. This template is sometimes used to synchronize talk page redirects to the target of their subject pages. If a recent edit applied this template, and you see this error, please try a null edit or try purging your cache, or both, before you revert the edit. |
If the redirected talk page is saved with this template, then it will be sorted to a maintenance category. Editors who monitor that category may watch for incorrect usage and remove this template when necessary.
Note: If for any reason this template is added to a talk-page redirect, which will change the page from a redirect to an actual talk page, this template will still sense the page as a redirect when you preview the edit. In a case like that, this template will show this error and not appear normal until the edit is actually saved.
Misuse
[edit]Please remember not to use this template to change an existing talk-page redirect into a talk page. This template should only be used on talk pages that have already been created with at least one project banner, one discussion, or one deletion-discussion notice. Also, editors must never create new talk pages just to tag them with this template; MfD regularly deletes useless talk pages, empty ones are subject to speedy deletion, and mass-creating useless pages in a robotic fashion is against policy.
