St Stephen's Church, Ealing
[edit]- ...
that the bells of St Stephen's in Ealing (pictured) caused complaints and they were subsequently transferred to St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen?
- Reviewed: International Harp Archive
- Comment: The hook facts may be confirmed here and here.
Created by Andrew Davidson (talk). Self-nominated at 22:02, 15 October 2017 (UTC).
- This article is new enough and long enough. The image is acceptably licensed, the article is neutral and I detected no copyright issues. The hook facts are correct and cited inline, but I think the hook is misleading, because the bells were not moved because of the complaints but because the building was unsafe. I also think you should mention the building's closure and replacement in the history section. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:37, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- Agreed. And it seems that:
- ALT1 ... that the bells of St Stephen's (pictured) in Ealing were so loud it prompted comments they "might almost be termed cruelty"?
- ...is more "hooky". As above, article is good to go, we just need to agree on a hook. Maury Markowitz (talk) 13:05, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- Actually, a crop of the image might be useful too. The right side is mostly redundant. Maury Markowitz (talk) 13:14, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- No, the right hand side shows the current church while the large stone building on the left is the former church building now converted into flats, as explained in the article. The mature trees rather get in the way of all this but that is the nature of the setting. I'll give some more thought to the hook. ALT1 doesn't flow well currently. Andrew D. (talk) 18:22, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- ALT2 (though I quite like ALT1) ...
that, after complaints about their noise, the bells of St Stephen's in Ealing (pictured) were moved to St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen?- one might add how far apart Ealing and Aberdeen are. Johnbod (talk) 17:59, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- ALT2 has the same faults as the original hook: if the building hadn't become unsafe and deconsecrated (and the bells removed) as a result, they'd likely still be in Ealing and still rung. (The documented complaints are from 1921; the deconsecration in 1979.) Also, the bells don't seem to have traveled straight from Ealing to Aberdeen, but were first moved to storage in an unknown location and then were refurbished before heading to Aberdeen. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:51, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- Saying that A happened and then B happened does not mean that A caused B – see post hoc ergo propter hoc. The original hook says "subsequently" not "consequently". Andrew D. (talk) 07:39, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- ALT3 ... that the bells of St Stephen's in Ealing (pictured) were so loud people said that their ringing "might almost be termed cruelty"?
- G2G with ALT3: Long enough (2.5k elig. chars.); new enough at time of submission; Earwig only finds 'copyvio' where there are direct quotes, used as such; QPQ well done; image created and its copyright released by the article's writer himself. ALT0 and ALT2 both inappropriate, as above. ALT3 better worded than ALT1.
The point about the visibility of the image above is well taken. It could be cropped to good effect, if the nominator wanted. That said, this has been sitting here for a month now and it's not worth holding up the nomination over. If the promoter thinks it isn't as good as other images that are available, just use the other ones. — LlywelynII 13:58, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
- I noticed this morning that this had hit the bottom of the list and so am getting back to it. I then took some more photos as the leaves have mostly fallen now and it was quite sunny. I'm not content with ALT3 as its phrasing is too weaselly. "People" didn't say the stated quote -- one particular person wrote it in a letter to a newspaper. I still reckon that some variation of the original like ALT2 would be best. Let me work on it this week, please. I'll address the image and hook issues and also expand the article. Andrew D. - I've expanded the article and additions include more pictures and history of the bells. The picture (right) might be considered as it better shows the old and new church buildings together. For the hook, I suggest the following:
- ALT4 ... that the bells of St Stephen's in Ealing (pictured) caused complaints, were later moved to the Docklands and finally installed in St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen?
- This addresses the point of BlueMoonset above. Please could Cwmhiraeth take another look. Andrew D. (talk) 13:45, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
- Approving ALT4 and the striking new image. Good to go. (By the way, both the article and the newspaper source have an error in using the word "peal"; a peal of bells has 5040 changes and takes about 3 hours to ring, while a quarter peal is a quarter of this length and takes about 45 minutes.) - @Andrew Davidson: at thumbnail size, the new image just looks like a big tree. Yoninah (talk) 11:17, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps for the thumbnail we might use a picture of the belfry, to go with the hook's focus on the bells. Here's an example, which I've just cropped. The trees get in the way here too but I could perhaps look for a better picture. I've taken quite a few but am finding that the High Efficiency Image File Format introduced in iOS 11 is a complication as Wikipedia does not support this yet. Andrew D. - This has been hanging around for a long time. The new image is fine and I am renewing my tick for ALT4 in the hope that someone will move the hook to prep soon. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:02, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
